The Liberty Bell Classic Registration Packet 2015 1 February 11, 2015 Hello friend, Congratulations! If you’re reading this, then that means that you’re now officially registered for the 40th Annual Liberty Bell Classic at the University of Pennsylvania. We’re glad you’ve chosen to spend your Valentine’s Day Weekend in the City of Brotherly Love. For those who are LBC regulars, welcome back! The Liberty Bell Classic is hosted by Penn for Youth Debate (PFYD), a student organization at Penn devoted to providing Philadelphia debate students with the resources they need to succeed. PFYD does this by sending Penn students to volunteer at area schools and also by running free tournaments for Philly students throughout the year. All proceeds from the LBC fund this mission. We are so appreciative of your support of the Philadelphia debate community. This registration packet is kind of long. Sorry. But it is really important that you read absolutely everything inside this packet as it will provide you with the information you need to make it through the weekend. In fact, it is so important you read this that -- We’re going to raise the stakes. You have a task. And that task has been carefully positioned inside this packet so that you have to read everything to figure out what it is. Once you find the task, complete it and send your response back to Chad Klitzman, this year’s tournament director, at [email protected]. You’ll be entered to win a very special Valentine’s Day Prize by playing along. Happy Reading! All our best, The PFYD Board PS – If anything goes wrong this weekend (locked doors, missing judges, rogue babies, etc.), contact Chad at (954) 325-3290.

When I show up on Saturday, where should I go?

• If you need to pay on Saturday morning, go to Claudia Cohen

Hall at 7 AM. Otherwise, you can show up by 7:30 AM.

• If you are a judge and would like to enjoy breakfast, go to the Terrace Room inside Claudia Cohen Hall.

• If you are competing in Public Forum, go to Williams Hall. PF postings will happen there around 7:45 AM.

• If you are competing in an event that is not Public Forum, go to

Claudia Cohen Hall G17 or the main floor of Houston Hall. Postings for non-PF events will occur in both G17 and in the

lobby of Houston Hall around 7:45 AM.

How do I pay?

That’s an excellent question. You have two options, although we highly suggest the first option as it involves getting about thirty more minutes of sleep on Saturday.

• Option 1: Pay on Friday night inside Houston Hall on the first floor (near the Houston Hall information desk) between 6 PM and 8 PM and be incredibly well-rested as you won’t have to arrive at Claudia Cohen Hall until 7:30 AM sharp on Saturday

• Option 2: Pay on Saturday morning inside Claudia Cohen Hall at 7 AM (ew…)

We will be dropping unpaid entries at 7:30 AM on Saturday. If you have any significant issues (like a severe traffic problem) that will prevent you from being able to make it before 7:30 AM, you must call (954) 325-3290 immediately.

After paying, you will receive an envelope containing…

o Wristbands for your students, judges, chaperones, etc. o A finalized invoice

o Cheesesteak vouchers (if you chose to order them) o Speech ballots

You will need to sign off at the payment table, indicating that you have received your documents in good order. Check to make sure that you have the proper number of wristbands, vouchers, and speech ballots.

Don’t be like this guy. If you can help it,

please pay us with a check made payable to

Penn for Youth Debate instead of

using cash.

What’s up with this wristband business?

Everyone – and we mean everyone – has to wear a wristband this year.

Your interper? Yes. Your PFer? Yes.

Your great aunt Ida who loves to watch LD rounds? Yes. Every single person affiliated with the tournament? Yes.

Should you or someone you care for dearly lose a wristband, a limited supply of extra wristbands will be stocked at the info desk inside Claudia

Cohen Hall. Note that the bingo supply store could not give us an unlimited supply of wristbands. As such, treat your wristband as you

would treat an invaluable diamond bracelet/family heirloom. If you’re feeling particularly creative, decorate your wristband, name it and make

it your own. But don’t lose it.

Hold up? We’re going to get all of our speech ballots at the very beginning?

Yep. And your students’ names have been personally engraved onto each and every ballot – along with their school code. Since engraving 1,700 speech ballots is an arduous task, there’s a slight possibility that an error was made on one or two ballots. As such, double check that the information on all of your students’ ballots is accurate. If it isn’t correct, you should be able to make fixes as the engraving was done in pencil. If a student has received ballots for the wrong event, let the person at the payment table/info desk know, and he or she will give you the proper ballot. Give your interpers all four of their speech ballots at the beginning of the day, and they will then hand a ballot over to a judge each time they compete. Should one of your students lose a ballot, spares will be located at the info desk but will be available in limited quantities. Also, our speech ballots are color coded this year. Here’s the key --

Red: Declamation (Pattern B) Blue: Dramatic Performance (Pattern B)

Green: Duo Interpretation (Pattern A) Yellow: Extemporaneous Speaking (Pattern B) -- this is Extemp, BTW

Purple: Oratory (Pattern A) Orange: Oral Interpretation (Pattern A)

Where can I pick up my cheesesteaks?

First off, good move. Thanks for ordering cheesesteaks. The cheesesteaks will arrive at 11:30 AM on Saturday morning. Cheesesteaks can be claimed by showing a cheesesteak

voucher to a PFYD representative at the info desk inside Claudia Cohen Hall. Unclaimed cheesesteaks will be promptly consumed at 2 PM.

Oh, and on that subject, the info desk inside Claudia Cohen Hall will be a place to do the following –

• Ask questions about pretty much anything • Turn in speech ballots

What’s this e-balloting thing I’m hearing about?

It’s a really nice way for us to both save the environment and operate efficiently. All debate events will be using e-balloting this year unless we tell you otherwise.

E-balloting means that instead of going to a ballot table to find a schematic and

grab your ballot, you will get a notification on your phone sending you directly to your round. After the round when you’ve made your decision, you just enter it directly into the tab system. Neat, clean and fast! Plus, the ballots go online for the debaters to consult later—no more lost ballots. The first step in casting e-ballots is to register with tabroom.com. It is best to do this in advance of the tournament.

1. Go to Tabroom.com 2. Click Sign Up in the top right corner to create an account.

The Liberty Bell Classic Registration Packet 2015

13

3. Once an account is created, click Link your account to a judge under the Your Account header.

4. Search for your judge record within the tournament you’re attending to connect your account.

As soon as you arrive at a tournament, connect to the wireless network. After the tournament starts, you will get notifications whenever you have a ballot. 1. Go to your assigned room. 2. After the competitors arrive, go to tabroom.com. The ballot assignment page

will be the first thing to pop up. When everyone is ready (and the sides are determined and set in PF), click START ROUND and the round can begin. This will let the tab room know that everyone is there and accounted for.

3. As soon as the round is over and you have made your decision, click on the ENTER button to submit your results. YOU MUST CONFIRM THE RESULTS AS DIRECTED.

4. RFDs and comments to the debaters should be entered after you've submitted the results (and even later, if you're rushing to your next assignment).

Ok, got it. But how will I get onto the Internet?

It’s easy as pie. Look for a wireless network called “AirPennNet-Guest”. When prompted, enter the following group code, and you’ll be

set –

C-SGABJNEA

On the subject of connectivity, we’d love for you to stay

connected while you’re at the LBC (although don’t tweet while you’re judging a round!). Help us come up with a hashtag for the LBC. You know where to send it if you’ve truly been reading along.

SEE YOU AT THE LBC!
