Life in all its fullness

People affected by leprosy face a triple blow of disease, disability and discrimination. Simply treating a person’s leprosy does not change the fact they remain living in poverty. Due to disabilities, including blindness, incurred as a result of late treatment of the disease and age-old stigma surrounding leprosy, earning a living often seems an impossible dream.

Without a helping hand these people, so loved by God, can be reduced to begging in order to survive.

The good news is that, thanks to your support, we can offer people affected by leprosy gifts of reconstructive surgery,

Mohammad Shahnawaz is fortunate. His parents travelled hundreds of miles with him a year ago to The Leprosy Mission’s Shahdara Hospital, on the outskirts of Delhi, India, after doctors in his home state failed to treat his leprosy.

While stigma surrounding leprosy prevents the 17-year-old from ever returning to his home village, his family has stuck by him.

In the past year, Mohammad has been nurtured back to health. Leprosy has taken itsgriponhisbodycausingthefingersonboth hands to claw and his feet to drag on the ground when he walks. Nerve paralysis in his face means he can no longer blink and, therefore, is at risk of infection and subsequently blindness.

Thanks to The Leprosy Mission’s generous supporters, Mohammad has undergone

The Leprosy Mission is so much more than a medical charity. Each year we provide a springboard to a new beginning to thousands of the world’s poorest and most marginalised people.

successful reconstructive surgery in both hands meaning he can grip a pen again. He has had surgery on his left foot so that it no longer drags on the ground. He is awaiting similar surgery on his right leg as well as sight-saving surgery to both eyes.

Because of leprosy, Mohammad left school when he was very young. He is applying to The Leprosy Mission’s vocational training centreatFaizabadsothathecantraintodoa skilled job and earn a wage to support his poor family.

The Leprosy Mission’s staff have been privileged to help sow the seeds for his future. It has brought a smile to Mohammad’s face for the firsttime in years.

sight-saving eye surgery, housing, a fresh water supply, schooling for their children, job training and help to start a business.

In other words, everything needed to restore their dignity and enable them to beself-sufficient.Please pray for those affected by leprosy on Sunday 26 January – World Leprosy Day 2014.

Leprosy in India factFIleIn 2012, more than half of new leprosy cases diagnosed globally were found inIndia(134,752 outof232,857).

Every two seconds India welcomes a child into its family. Yet every four minutes it shuns one because of leprosy.

The Indian economy is growing with seven million jobs created a year. Yet leprosy-affected people struggletofind paid work.

42% of India’s 1.2 billion population is living below the poverty line of US$1.25 a day.

for leprosy is

effective

Yet 85% of Delhi still believes leprosy is not curable at all.
