Last November 2017, Bridget Hill emailed us this account

of her researches into the lives lost from the Honourable

Artillery Company including her own grandfather buried

at Leighton Church. The piece was too late for last year’s

remembrance features but now very appropriate in this

centenary year of the end of the Great War

I went to Holy Trinity Church in Leighton recently as part of a project I am working on to research all the men of the Honourable Artillery Company who lost their lives as a result of the Great War. My grandfather served with the regiment and was wounded in November 1916. Whilst at the church I picked up a copy of The Leighton News and thought perhaps your readers might be interested in the following:

John Hugh Elton was born on 27th April 1893 in Leighton, Welshpool, Wales. He was the only son and the eldest of two children of John Elton, a farmer, and Jane Elton. Elton’s father died in 1906 when Elton was only thirteen years old.

Elton was admitted in to the HAC on 18th August 1915 with the rank of Private. After training in England, he arrived in France on 8th January 1916 and joined the 1st Battalion in the field on 21st January 1916. In November that year he was admitted into hospital suffering from dermatitis and boils. He was treated in Etaples and Havre, France before rejoining the Battalion in the field in January 1917. On 18th March 1917 he was appointed to the rank of Lance Corporal (unpaid).

On 18th April 1917, Elton was wounded in the right thigh and left hand. He was transferred through the casualty clearing system and was admitted into hospital in Leeds on 25th April 1917. Elton was treated there until being transferred to a military hospital in Beaulieu, Hampshire on 8th May 1917. He was discharged from hospital in July 1917 and transferred to the Reserve Battalion at the Tower of London.

Elton returned to the Western Front on 15th November 1917, reverting to the rank of Private on embarkation. He was granted the substantive rank of Lance Corporal thirteen days later.

On 20th November 1918, nine days after the

Bridget Hill <[email protected]>

armistice, Elton was granted 14 days leave. He returned to England but was taken ill with influenza and subsequently died of pneumonia in hospital on 29th November 1918 aged 25. He was buried in Leighton Churchyard on 2nd December.

It would appear that John Hugh was known as Hugh, presumably to distinguish him from his father, John.

Garden of Remembrance (Eleventh of November) Once every year,The little crosses, row on row,Like early snowdrops seem to grow. And from the shadowy gloomOf an Unknown Warrior's tomb,Come strangely unpoetic laysOf our dead yesterdays."It's a long way to TipperaryIt's a long way to go..."And once again we hear the beatOf those unconquerable feet.As down the road that leads to Journeys End,Singing of Tipperary or a lady friend.Come unknown poets and a tattered flag. And left behind, an old kit bag.

The Great War Armistice Centenary this month will involve special commemorations nationally and locally. The finale of the14-18

programme of arts will include events like Pages of the Sea where people gather on beaches to pay respects to Britain’s war dead. Carol Ann Duffy’s tribute poem The Wound in Time will be one of her last works as poet laureate. Here in Leighton and Trelystan as well as the annual services of remembrance, this year the Tree of Remembrance in Leighton church is for people to attach prayers, memories, hopes for peace which will be included in the service on 11th November. After the armistice, the final tragedy of the war was the huge numbers of servicemen who, having survived the battlefield died from the devastating effect of the virulent ‘Spanish flu’ – the rapid spread of the disease is thought to have been exacerbated by the contagious conditions of those awaiting demobilisation. Just one such individual story on page 3 is that of Hugh Elton who was traced by a relative to Leighton churchyard.By the start of hostilities cameras and film for moving pictures were well established. It was the first time a war had been thoroughly documented for the cinema. There were many famous battle sequences filmed and many ‘first time’ recordings including the rarely seen but important Battle of the Ancre – this being shown free at the Hafren theatre (see opposite). However black and white silent moving pictures do look like ancient history to modern eyes. They Shall Not Grow Old by director Peter Jackson addresses this issue with a major restoration of WW1 footage. Using enormous processing facilities, the film is not only in colour but using teams of highly skilled lip-readers, the actual dialogue being spoken at the time has now been recorded and added as a sound track. By all accounts this is a real insight into the lives and conditions during the war. Watch out for the full screening on BBC 1 around 11th November

THE GUERNSEY LITERARY ANDPOTATO PEEL PIE SOCIETY

The Battle of the Ancre and the Advance of The Tanks (1917), is a masterpiece of British documentary cinema about the autumn and winter stages of the Somme campaign on the Western Front. It includes the first ever scenes of tanks in battle.

Thanks to a grant from the National Heritage Fund, Powys Montgomery Federation of WIs recently staged a Trees and Bees Day based at Leighton Village Hall free for all WI members. The day started with a fascinating walk round the Royal Forestry Society’s collection of ancient trees. RFS Warden David Williams, who led the walk, described how the original 33 coastal redwoods were transported from California and planted in Leighton in the 1850s, with a covenant that said they should never be felled. Mr Williams also told the story of the birth of the Leyland Cypress, which happened in Leighton Forest when two different cypresses unexpectedly hybridised. Although dismissed as forest trees, the Leyland Cypress proved an instant best seller. Most of the 70 people who attended the Trees and Bees Day walked up to the RFS reserve and back again, making them more than ready for the generous lunch provided by the WI Federation Board of Trustees and the Public Affairs Sub-Committee. Jane Walton created beautiful table and foyer arrangements and her grandchildren made delightful woolly pom-pom bees to decorate the hall. After lunch Heather Fairgreaves and daughter Siobhan, members of the Montgomeryshire Bee Keepers Association, talked about their bees and hives. Everyone was given a slip outlining one of the many roles bees have in the hive, with only one slip describing the work of the queen. By good fortune (or could it have been sleight of hand?) this slip found its way to the WI’s own Queen Bee, Jean Hurrell, Chairman of the Powys Montgomery Federation of WIs, who was awarded a jar of Hendidley Honey by the ‘Fairgreaves. A leaf and tree quiz with a cup of tea and cake finished off a day much enjoyed by all.

WI’S TREES & BEES DAY IN LEIGHTON

WI’S TREES & BEES DAY IN LEIGHTON

This novel tells the stories of five generations of the Smith family of Lancashire. It moves in time from the hysteria surrounding the witchcraft trials of the 17th Century, through the upheaval of the English Civil War, the coming of the canals and the creeping tide of industrialisation, to the General Strike of 1926 and its aftermath. It follows the family's lives in Ormskirk, Lathom, Dalton, Windle, Parr and Haydock, from yeoman farmers to miners

ANOTHER BEQUESTA Swarm of Bees* is a novel by Allan Smith, a previous editor of the Leighton News. Based on Allan’s researches, it’s the story of five generations of his Lancashire family. The title come from the first

story in the 17th century where a ‘swarm of bees’ is recorded as a legacy in someone’s will. The bee motif carries through the next generations’ stories. Clearly the importance and value of healthy bees has been recognised for 100s of years.

*available as a Kindle download from Amazon

The Women’s Institute is campaigning for more wild flowers to be planted on derelict land, roadside verges and other public spaces to save honey bees. It is a response to the fact that the number of bumblebees in the UK has declined by around 70% since the 1970s and honey bees by up to 15% in the last two years. The sudden decline in bees has been blamed on intensive farming techniques, climate change and a mysterious condition known as colony collapse disorder. It could cause serious problems for agriculture and food production since bees are essential to pollinate many plants. Already major organisations have called for research into the problem and the Government has invested £10 million to tackle the decline in bees and other pollinator insects like butterflies.

Thank you to Sarah & Haydyn for cleaning the sides of the bus shelter. Rachel plans to do the roof.......what could possibly go wrong there?

Happy 70th Birthday to the ever youthful John Cookson who was celebrating on 22nd October and on several other nights also, in fact he has been partying for most of 2018!

Happy 80th Birthday to our local Ploughing Champion Murray Tibbott who is celebrating on 9th November. Happy Birthday Mur.

GREAT GRANDPARENTS CELEBRATE!

It has been a busy summer with newborn great grandchildren arriving in all directions! Congratulations to all our very proud great grandparents and welcome to all the precious babies.

Xander Harry Jones was born on 26th September, son to Matthew and Jordie of Forden, grandson to Rob of Seven Wells and Sue and great grandson to Doris. Xander was born 13 days after his Great Grandmother Doris’s 96th birthday so lots to celebrate in the Jones household and a belated ‘Happy Birthday’ from the whole village to Doris.

Sylvia and Gordon Helliwell have had a very exciting few months as three of their Helliwell grandsons had three little Helliwell sons! So here they all are.......

FAMILY WORSHIP AT LEIGHTON CHURCHThe 11.00 am service on the third Sunday of each month at Holy Trinity Church is now a family service of “all-age” worship. This will focus each month on a particular theme (on 18th November it will be “Water of Life”), with appropriate hymns (a mixture of old and new), music, story and activities. We will also celebrate birthdays and other special occasions. Everyone is very welcome. TREE OF REMEMBRANCEA Tree of Remembrance has been placed in Holy Trinity Church, and it will be there until our Remembrance Service (10.50 am on Sunday 11th November). There are “leaves” of card on which anyone who would like to is invited to write prayers, thoughts, hopes or perhaps names of loved ones, and they will become part of our Remembrance celebration in this centenary year. CONCERTThe Coppice Singers, a small choir based in Knockin Heath but including members from a wide area, will be giving a special concert of seasonal music in Holy Trinity Church on Friday 30th November, beginning promptly at 7.30 pm. Admission is £6, and proceeds will be divided between the church and the village hall. MESSY CHURCHMessy Church is just that - designed for children and their parents (or grandparents . . .), it includes worship, food and quite a lot of crafty, painty but also messy activity. Quite a lot of parishes have started to do Messy Church, and I’d quite like to see if we could start one in Leighton. Look out for further information . . . CHRISTINGLEThe 11.00 Family Service on Sunday 16th December will be a Christingle Service. More about this in the next Leighton News, but Christingle is a lovely way of re-telling the Christmas story for everyone but especially for children.

CHRISTMAS CRIB SERVICE AT TRELYSTAN

A reminder that the famous and rather lovely Christmas Crib service at Trelystan Church will happen again this year on Christmas Eve at 3.00 pm - a special service in a remarkable church, not to be missed.

Jennifer Marlow writes: We have found a kitten on Long Mountain on Monday (8th Oct). It is too small to be fully away from its mum, according to the vet, and very skinny. The closest houses to where we found it have said that it is a stray, and nobody has called Camlas vets to report it missing as yet, but I was wondering if you could put a mention in the Leighton news, just in case it does have owners looking for it? My telephone numbers are 01938 553 240 and 07908 722 435. If nobody claims it, then

we will keep it (as it's already making itself very much at home)!

I always consider myself so lucky to live in Leighton with everything that goes on both here and in Trelystan, and I realise that all these things don’t “just happen” in the villages, in fact they are carefully

What a challenging year 2018 has been for gardens – rain and snow in the early months followed by weeks of hot dry sunny days. Yet, true to form, garden owners welcomed hundreds of visitors from far and near to their wonderful gardens across the county. They and their helpers served thousands of slices of cake and cups of tea. It is too early to say how much we raised in 2018 but we do know that many gardens reported record number of visitors. All we can say is THANK YOU – thank you to the garden owners, thank you to their helpers and thank you to you all for visiting our gardens. It takes all of you to make the National Garden Scheme work.

We are now looking forward to 2019. We have some wonderful new gardens registered to open next year as well as some old favourites returning. We are very excited about our “Village Opening” in Berriew when five very different gardens will all open on the same afternoon in June with the ladies of the WI serving tea in the Old School.

There are also 18 gardens which will be opening by arrangement. Some of these welcome individuals as well as larger groups, so if you are planning a family get together and want to do something different why not visit a garden and enjoy afternoon tea there? It will be a little while before the NGS website is updated with the 2019 information so we have produced a preview list of the gardens which are open by arrangement to help you plan ahead. If you are arranging the programme for a club or society, you might like to know that we have a great presentation covering the history of the National Garden scheme as well as lots about gardens in Powys.

If you would like to be sent the preview list, or want to know more about our presentation, please contact me, Helen Anthony (details below) You can discover more about our gardens and the charities supported by the National Garden Scheme at www.ngs.org.uk .

Keep up to date by following us on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter @powysngs.
