On Ash Wednesday he left Cortona to go and spend his lent in penance alone in one of the three islands of Lake Trasimeno, Isola Maggiore.For this reason he asked a friend to transport him there with his boat.

However, during the trip, a violent thunder storm broke out, but Francesco succeded in holding one

candle alighted for all the time.Unfortunatly, all the crew died, swallowed by the water of the lake except for the Saint who saved

himself miraculoulsy.

Once arrived in the island, Francesco searched for a place

where he could sleep.He found it under a jutting rock

covered with shrubs.For forty days the Saint went to pray

on a rock by the lake shores.

Every day he prayed so intensely as to leave his mark elbows and knees on the hard stone.

Today, this rock can still be seen in Isola Maggiore.

After forty days of meditation, the Saint returned on the dry land.

Once again the lake was under a storm but Francisco hold out his hand to lessen the lake

water level.

Today, on the place of his

hermitage there is a chapel built over a spring.It is said that

this spring water has purifying properties .

This spring is miraculously active only in

summer.

SAN FRANCESCO E LA SUA QUARESIMASAN FRANCESCO E LA SUA QUARESIMA

La leggenda racconta che nel 1211 S. Francesco di Assisi si trovava a Cortona per predicare la Parola di Dio. Il giorno del Mercoledì delle Ceneri partì da Cortona per andare a trascorrere la Quaresima e fare penitenza in solitudine in una delle tre isole del Lago Trasimeno, Isola Maggiore. Per questo chiese ad un suo amico barcaiolo di accompagnarlo con la sua barca.

Durante il viaggio, però, si scatenò una violenta tempesta, ma Francesco riuscì lo stesso a tenere accesa una candela per tutto il tempo. Purtroppo tutti i membri dell’equipaggio morirono inghiottiti dalle acque del lago, tranne il Santo che si salvò miracolosamente.

Una volta arrivato sull’isola, Francesco cercò un posto per dormire. Lo trovò sotto un masso sporgente ricoperto di arbusti.

Per quaranta giorni il Santo si recò a pregare in riva al lago, sopra ad uno scoglio. Egli pregò tutti i giorni così intensamente da lasciare le impronte dei suoi gomiti e delle sue ginocchia sulla pietre dura.

Questo scoglio si trova ancora oggi all’Isola Maggiore.

Trascorso il periodo di meditazione il santo fece ritorno sulla terraferma. Ancora una volta il lago era in tempesta, ma Francesco stese la sua mano e placò le acque.

Oggi sul luogo del romitaggio c’è una cappellina costruita sopra ad una sorgente. Si dice che quest’acqua abbia proprietà purificatrici. La sorgente, però, è miracolosamente attiva solo in estate.
