Hospital environments are often large, unfamiliar and confusing buildings that the majority ofpatient and visitors will find difficult to navigate, made even worse for those with dementia, cognitive issues or sight impairment.

Whether to achieve a good CQC rating or PLACE audit, enhancing the environment is the rightthing to do to support service users in all care settings and Find have developed a range ofproducts that can help improve any hospital setting and achieve a number of positive outcomes.

What can improving the environment achieve?- 50% reduction in incontinence- 60% reduction in agitation and aggression- 70% reduction in slips, trips and falls- 90% of distressed behaviour is caused by people and the environment

There are a number of additional positive outcomes to the NHS when the above improvementsare achieved:- a cost saving due to a reduction in drug and medication use (eg avoidable prescribing of antibiotics, painkillers and laxatives, as well as anti-psychotic drugs)- a cost saving due to improved continence (staff time savings, laundry, incontinence products)- fewer violent incidents and more patient independence resulting in improved staff morale, less absence and better attrition- reduced length of stay due to the prevention of avoidable accidents and complications- fewer readmissions as levels of well being are maintained/improved at initial time of discharge

Other popular standard signs for hospitals include Nurse’s Station, Day Room and Treatment Room.

Interchangeable toilet signFind’s Toilet signage is very popular in hospitalsettings, in particular the interchangeableMale/Female signs and the flag designs. We recommend choosing a bold distinguishingcolour for all toilet signs (red and yellow beingthe most popular).

“This is Me” frame

Bespoke Bay and Side Room signs are an ideal way of helping patients with orientationto and from their bed area. Using colour to differentiate between bays, along with clearmemorable signs reduces anxiety levels and the risk of falls when patients need to use a toilet.

This adaptable frame was originally designed for Pennine Care. Ideally to be used atthe bedside, although some facilities prefer them to be located by the door, they are designed to display important information about the patient that will enable care staffto engage with them, having those most essential facts to hand (who and what areimportant to me). Wall-mounted or free-standing and available in two sizes, the framesare designed with each service to ensure it is fit for purpose. Bespoke finishes, including colours can be used and a sheet of A4 or A5 paper is simply inserted into theunbreakable polycarbonate pocket.

Murals

11www.findmemorycare.co.uk

The fabric of our environment directly influences our mood andwell being. Find Murals are a powerful and effective way to enhancethe environment - even in a hospital setting.

When working with clients to use murals to enhance environments, our primary considerations are for the individuals who will benefit from them and to ensure they are not subjected to false realities, which can be highly detrimental to their well being and recovery. Find Murals include windows that are frosted to avoid vivid reality. They set the scene and must have a real, interactive element to them to work well. For example, if a mural is of a cafe, then there should be seating where a person can have a cup of tea and a snack. When used properly, the murals can totally transform a room.

LED Mood Lighting Panels

Reminiscence images

Grab RailsMemories are the one thing we truly own. They make us who we are. Memory is one of the most apparent changes affected in many people with dementia. New memories aredifficult to keep and more recent ones are often no longer accessible. Older, more deep-seated memoriesbecome the easiest to recall and this makes the events associated with them seem more recent, often to theextent where they become the current reality. Our Reminiscence image library is full of scenes, products, places and people that are 'of an era' and chosen fortheir themes (to help with orientation) and content for high probability of recognition and association withpersonal experiences. This makes them exceptionally effective in stimulating memories and promptingconversations that are so valuable for increased interaction and supporting well-being.Find’s catalogue of images is vast, so we’ve put together some collections on popular themes. These are bestviewed on our website with a small taster of what is available below.

Features- 12mm thick, rigid board- Integral, secure fixings- Fully protected tactile image- Wipe clean- Protected edges- Fits perfectly flush to the wall

By the age of 75, a person requires twice as much light as the national lightingstandards state and a person with dementia needs even more. According tothe DSDC a person with dementia requires four times as much light as a 20 yearold. Natural light is always the best option, however many care settings are notdesigned to allow for this and to overcome some of the issues associated withreduced lighting levels, Find have developed LED mood lighting panels as anachievable and affordable alternative.Find is already working with many clientsto enhance environments by developing dark corridors and unused spaces intocommunal areas that offer stimulation, interaction and engagement, such ascafes and shops. Good lighting combined with good design makes good sense,so incorporating the new lighting panels into these areas really adds to theexperience. Increasing lighting levels is proven to reduce the risk of falls andlower anxiety levels in people living with dementia. Encouraging exercise andactivity in well lit engaging environments can also be incorporated into goodstrategies for both continence, nutrition and hydration.

The mood panels are also becoming increasingly popular in a number of bed areas. They work well in palliative andend of life care settings, where people lack mobility (one lady would wake up and say “another nice day againtoday” when she saw the blue skies above her bed and this put a smile on her calm face). They are also good to useas a way of reducing anxiety in some surgical settings and as the designs are bespoke, could work well in paediatrics.

Bolton Hospital recently had these installed into a small room, which virtually lacked any natural light. The change hasbeen remarkable and along with the introduction of Find’s murals, has transformed a previously dark magnoliapainted room into an area loved by patients, visitors and staff alike.

Reversible Mirror

15www.findmemorycare.co.uk

NEWPRODUCT

This product has been designed to support people living with dementia, who maybecome distressed if looking in a mirror as they no longer recognise their own reflectionor may perceive the mirror as a window with a stranger watching them. The reversible mirror makes an attractive permanent fixture to any wall, but with aversatility that makes it adaptable to meet everyone’s needs. It is easy to install andchange and when used in hospital care settings, has been designed with safety inmind as well as for its attractive qualities. The features of this simple product bring many benefits including continued/increasedindependence and confidence, as well as preserving dignity. When a person looks ina mirror and doesn’t recognise their own reflection it can be very distressing andincrease their levels of agitation and aggression, which in turn can affect concentrationand increase risk of falls. Being able to replace the mirror image with a picture preventsall these reactions. A mirror in a bathroom can adversely affect levels of personal caretoo as privacy may feel compromised or quite simply the experience in the bathroomcan be too distressing. Installing a reversible mirror that can look like a picture mayenable a person to continue using the bathroom with confidence and drasticallyreduce their risk of incontinence. A person living in fear of an incontinence episodeis more likely to reduce fluid intake, resulting in dehydration (UTIs and delirium) andincreasing their risk of requiring hospital care.In summary, the benefits include reduced agitation; less risk of falls; excellent as part ofa good continence and personal hygiene strategy; can help as part of a hydrationstrategy; reduce the risk of hospitalisation.

Features:- Size: 485mm(h) x 352mm(w)- Mirror size: 390mm(h) x 280mm(w)- Manufactured from specialist recyclable materials that are durable, fire and chemical resistant, waterproof, hygienic and cleanable- Shatter-proof mirror material- Pre-drilled screw holes for easy fixing, supplied with attractive chrome covers (fixings included)- Available with locking feature for added security- Large choice of images available for the reverse of the mirror
