LMSA NATIONAL CHAPTER INITIATIVE

Participation in the LMSA Policy Summit provides several ways for students to grow as clinicians and develop important skills in medical advocacy via: 1-Mentoring of students by leaders in Latino health care and policy 2-Networking opportunities to collaborate with health professional students, residents, attending physicians, and Congressional Representatives on Capitol Hill who are invested in Latino health issues 3-Training in developing policy solutions to current issues in Latino health within the American health care system. Additionally, we are offering the first Certificate in Latino Health Policy. By gaining this Certificate, students can demonstrate a sincere interest in understanding the basic tenants of policy development as it pertains to Latino health care. The certificate opens doors for students seeking advanced training and leadership opportunities in policy. Please also feel free to share this email with any faculty members interested in health policy initiatives and research, as we are also interested in building long-term relationships within the academic community. To learn more please visit our website at http://lmsa.net/policy/ or email us at [email protected].

LMSA POLICY CERTIFICATE

The LMSA national policy team created the LMSA Policy Certificate in order to:

1. Recognize the efforts of LMSA members actively engaged in Latino health policy,

2. Encourage LMSA members to participate in Latino health policy activities, and

3. Foster the development of policy and leadership skills among LMSA members.

The LMSA Policy Certificate stipulations would be as follows:

1) Attend the LMSA Policy Summit in Washington, DC

Date: March 27th-29th Location: Marriott Wyndham Park Hotel

AND

2) Fulfill 2 of the bulleted points:

Attend the Congress of Delegates and workshops at the LMSA Policy Summit

Attend 1 of the following events

LMSA GLAS Leadership Seminar http://lmsa.net/events/glas

LMSA Regional policy workshop/event

Actively participate in one of the LMSA Policy Caucuses (for example, this year includes the LGBT and Nutrition caucuses)

Actively participate in one of the LMSA Policy planning subcommittees (Fundraising, Marketing, Plenary Session, Logistics and Hospitality, etc)

Write a resolution or contribute to a resolution as a co-author and submit to LMSA Policy Summit

Provide testimony to a resolution at the LMSA Policy Summit-Congress of Delegates (COD)

The LMSA Policy Certificate was designated to stimulate medical students to practice and develop crucial skills in policy, including analysis, research, writing, public speaking, presentations, and policy planning. This will enable them to appropriately integrate Latino health inequities of quality, access, and cost with the associated political, social, and economic factors of the Hispanic patient population. The LMSA national policy team believes that this certificate helps to address the critical need for politically responsive medical students, preparing them to become effective Latino health advocates and leaders as they move forward in their careers. This certificate is ideal for those medical students interested in pursuing a profession involving Latino health policy, and additionally provides formal recognition of one’s accomplishments in this arena.

Advancing Medical Care Practice: Using Telemedicine to diagnose the Flu “If you’re really feeling crummy and you have the symptoms of influenza, your chances of having influenza are very, very high — over 90 percent,” Dr. William Schaffner, chair of preventive medicine at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee. “Doctors are saying I don’t need to do a test because sometimes the test is negative even if you have influenza.” “Although the rapid influenza test is effective at determining whether children have the virus (as opposed to some kind of bacterial infection), it’s wrong 25 percent of the time in adults because their bodies don’t produce as much of the virus when they’re sick. Children, on the other hand, have weaker immune systems and become little flu distributors even before they start to feel sick. As a result, they have very high viral loads.” You can find this article at: http://www.mycentraloregon.com/2015/01/01/cautious-doctors-use-telemedicine-to-diagnose-flu/
