About the LASHUP 16
Now that summer is over, we’ll be slowing down on the activities. As you can
see from the calendars, we only had five items on September’s versus the 12 in
August and 11 in July. But we do have a couple of important items coming up in
the next couple of months, especially November. In October, we have the gun show at the Bel Air American Legion. I will need
some of you to volunteer to man the table and sell raffle tickets for the M1. We
also have bingo again on the 23rd of October. Don Benson has volunteered to
provide the special this time.
In November, we will be performing a cake cutting ceremony at Oak Crest
retirement center on the 11th. We have done this several times over the years and after not having us last year, they realized that their Marine veterans and
staff missed having it and invited us back. We will also be raising the Marine
Corps flag at the Harford County government building on the Marine Corps
birthday as we always do. Another thing we are going to add this year is a
simple cake cutting ceremony for the detachment on the Marine Corps birthday.
Please join us in the VFW lounge at 1830 (6:30 pm) on the 10th of November.
We will read the Commandant’s birthday message, cut the cake and just have
some fun sitting and sharing stories. I encourage everyone to come and bring
friends and family. Hopefully, we can start our own Birthday tradition.
November 8th is the Toys for Tots benefit concert featuring Great Train Robbery.
I hope to get full support from the detachment by either helping out with the
logistics or purchasing tickets to attend. This is a great way to raise toys and
funds for the Harford County campaign. If you would like to volunteer to help out, please contact Art Shellhouse at [email protected] or
410-692-0426. There is a lot to do, so every volunteer will help make it easier
on all of us.
I want to thank everyone who has given their time to get us through this busy
summer. We cannot succeed as a detachment
without everyone pitching in.

The position
for Detach-
ment Adjutant
The Detachment has had a busy two months since our last newsletter. We participated in the
Maryland State BBQ Bash, the Havre de Grace Seafood Festival, Kitchen duty for the VFW Bingo and
2 Bel Air First Friday’s just to mention a few of our events. A few of our members, including me,
attended the Marine Corps League 92nd National Convention in Scottsdale, Arizona. It is great
opportunity reconnect with old Marine buddies and learn how our MCL functions. I drove to Arizona
with my two youngest children. We made a few cool stops along the way including Graceland, the
National Scouting Museum (outside Dallas, TX), the Grand Canyon and The Alamo. I had the
opportunity to travel as a child and I enjoy passing similar experiences along to the next generation.
We live in a great Country with lots of interesting people! Everyone should get out there and see it.
The Department of Maryland held their Fall Meeting in Mt Airy hosted by the LCpl Robert Deane
Detachment on 12 September. The Department Meetings are open to ALL Members and Associate
Members. I hope to see more of us attending. The Winter Meeting will be held in Westminster
hosted by the Carroll County Det. There are still a few open Dept Committee Chairman spots
available if anyone is interested.
Two of our Detachment members were awarded the Distinguished Citizen Medal – Silver. It is the
highest award a Department Commandant can bestow. I’ll put their names in the next newsletter
once they have been personally presented their award.
The Annual APG Marine Corps Birthday Luncheon will be held this year on Friday – 6 November.
This is a great opportunity to invite that Marine buddy who you have been after to join the League.
All Marines are invited, not just MCL members.
We will be supporting the Harford County Wine Festival being
held at Rockfield Manor on 26 Sept. Volunteers are needed from
1130-1500 & 1500-1830 or all day if you’re motivated. Bring your
own chair.

Vacations are over, for now, and we need your input for the future.
See you on Sept. 22nd at 1900 hrs Semper Fi,

We have supported our deployed troops by collecting 154
phones in the past month. To date that is over 2220 cell phones.
These phones are sent to a collection point and exchanged for tele-
phone calling cards which are sent to troops overseas. This enables
them to call family and friends at no cost to them.
If you have collected any phone donations, please be sure to bring them to the next business meeting.
