The future is now / / An inventory of the current economic situation does not warn of future resource shortages, they already exist.

Limited resources: Raw materials such as metals or rare earths Energy for manufacturing process Expert personnel

Therefore it is exactly these three factors which will cons-titute the success of companies in the future. Over the next years the cut throat competition between large and parti-cularly small and medium-sized companies will further intensify. Success will ultimately be determined by how fast and direct research results can be implemented in new products and product technologies. In other words: the groundwork for product innovation will be laid as early as the research & development stage.

Research and development / / The Augsburg Innovations-park is the platform for close and successful cooperation between economy and research, from which both sides benefit equally.

For companies there is the potential for competition, because they can directly participate in the current state of research.

The research institutions will be faced with application- oriented and practice-relevant problems that need to be solved.

Considerable sums have been already invested and in the coming years will continue to be invested, in order to pro-mote resource efficiency in the Augsburg Innovationspark: large and small companies together with other R&D-Teams, scientists, and other research groups can develop new pro-ducts and technologies to series production. With this close interaction between companies and research institutions, the Augsburg Innovationspark is developing into a unique project in Europe.

The idea / / The Augsburg Innovationspark is pushing ahead the cooperation between technical and business-administrational development. As a result, innovations with real economic potential will be detected at an early stage and purposefully implemented with interested companies. In order to use the synergies between science and business optimally, we need a location that promotes creativity. Prof. Kees Christiaanses' masterplan for the European Center for Resource efficiency is currently being implemented. The vision of urban life and work in the same place combines the concepts of:

Research and development Study and further education Work and living

Universities and research institutions are embedded in a dynamic environment of large and small companies, researchers and technologists. The Free State of Bavaria, the city of Augsburg, the Chamber of the Industriekammer of Swabia, the Handelskammer as well as district Augsburg and Aichach-Friedberg are the initiators of this unique project.

Implementation / / Lightweight technology is an example of how important the Augsburg Innovationspark is for re-source efficiency: the use of carbon fibre reinforced plastics (CFRP) in series production results in many benefits. This futuristic material is light as well as extremely strong and stiff, and offers many possibilities for processing. However, in order to use it as a substitute for steel, aluminium and magnesium, important challenges must first be met:

Efficient and economical production of the work parts Optimization of production lines Handling of CFRP by robots Recycling of materials

Technological develompments for the automated production of CFRP, and its application in series-production are being driven by the cooperation between industries such as the aeronautics & space sector, the automotive sector, envi-ronmental and mechanical engineering.

Vision and concept / /
