  • Just down the road from Wasaga Beach, Ontario, sits Langcrest Farms Ltd. The 4700-acre operation

    - where the Langman family grows corn, soybeans, wheat and edible beans – has been in operation since 1903. The landscape around the farm has changed a lot; on the once-quiet municipal road, tourist vehicles whizz by as they rush to visit the world’s largest freshwater beach. That’s nothing compared to the changes on the land. The once-humble operation expanded rapidly from the 1970s forward, as two branches of the Langman family started working in tandem to keep the farm growing. “We haven’t looked back yet,” says Drew Langman, one of the fifth generation farmers managing the operation.

Ross and Sam Langman, the fourth generation brothers who ran the operation over the past several decades, worked together to lay the groundwork for the farm’s expansion into the cropping, dairy and poultry operation it is now. However, their sons – Drew, Adam, Curtis and Luke – have carried on the tradition of pushing the farm even further with the Langmans’ signature ‘divide-and-conquer’ approach.

"'Farming Together' is the tagline on the t-shirts," says Drew with a smile.

While each Langman mans their own area of the farm, whether it’s in the barn or in the field, their daily coffee breaks together in the farm office keep the whole team on the same page with every area of the operation. It’s a unique approach with multiple benefits – there’s always something to discuss, which means each man gets to keep a bird’s eye view of the land. “In the springtime and the fall time we tend to specialize, so you know your job and you’re able to be more efficient,” explains Adam. “But as you can tell, we all chip in.”

Since the Langmans’ operation is so teamwork-oriented, it’s been easy for Todd Woodhouse, their DEKALB® Agronomist, to fit right in. “It’s nice to have a person who has self-confidence with what they’re saying to you,” Ross says, referring to Todd’s seemingly encyclopedic agronomic knowledge.

Working with Todd, the younger Langmans have introduced their own system of running trials in their fields. While the family finds value in participating in Market Development trials, they’ve taken to running a few for their own purposes just to see what works.

“The biggest problem with the test plot is that it tells you what you should have done, not what you should do,” says Drew.

With several test plots to keep track of every year, the family has started managing the farm with the Climate FieldViewTM digital ag platform. That way, the Langmans can easily record their field data and insights for years to come. It also helps them refine their management techniques as they go. “You can see the varieties you planted, you can see the yield, how did this spot do versus that one, that kind of thing,” says Drew.

You can see on the Langmans’ field maps that this year they’ve opted to grow their go-to DEKALB® corn hybrids and soybean varieties. In the corn fields

behind the farm house, plots of DKC43-10RIB, DKC38-03RIB and DKC38-55RIB corn are standing strong. For soybeans, the Langmans opt for DKB04-41s and DKB06-43s – both Roundup Ready 2 Xtend® varieties that the Langmans like for their high yield potential and chemistry options. But it’s not just performance that has the Langmans growing DEKALB® brand seed year over year. “We grow it because it works, and because the people behind it are as good as the product itself,” says Luke. “Todd’s like, the disease, bug, and deficiency champion. You just point at something and say ‘what’s this, Todd?’ – and you know you’re getting an answer.”

“It helps if I’m right, too,” says Todd with a wink.

We thank the Langmans for choosing DEKALB® brand seed for their farm and wish their family a safe and successful harvest this year and for many years to come. Check out the results of the Langman’s and other farmer-managed Market Development trials on DEKALB.ca this fall.
