Kristin KvenoKristin Kveno is best known to readers as The Land’s
From the Fields correspondent. For the past three years,Kristin has checked in with farmers across Minnesota andnorthern Iowa to get the latest crop conditions.
When the FTF farmers have a tough day, be it hail, storms or frosts, Kristin’s heart sinks for them. When theyhave a good crop, she’s excited for them.
“I love getting to know the farmers every year and fol-lowing their lives from planting to harvest,” said Kristin. “Iam with the readers as they share the good and bad. I feelit’s a privilege to be able to spend a little time in theirworld.”
Kristin lives in New Ulm, Minn., with her husband, SethKveno, a seed sales manager for Mycogen. She spendsmost of her time in the minivan shuttling her four chil-dren, ages 3 to 9.
From 2005 to 2009, Kristin was copy editor and staff writer for The Land. She has speech and mass communication degrees from North Dakota StateUniversity, Fargo.
Phyllis NystromPhyllis Nystrom writes Grain Outlook, analyzing the
corn and soybean markets every week for The Land. Since2006, Phyllis spends several hours every week compilingand making sense of the market data for our readers.
Phyllis is a full-service broker and branch manager forCHS Hedging of Inver Grove Heights, Minn. She special-izes in risk management for grain elevators, energy com-panies and farmers. She travels all over the United Statesto meet with clients.
Phyllis grew up in Wyoming, Ill., and graduated from theUniversity of Illinois with a B.S. degree in agriculture eco-nomics. In 1981, she started her career as a grain mer-chandiser and elevator manager for Continental Grain. She served as senior grain merchandiser for The Ander-sons and Consolidated Grain and Barge before joiningCountry Hedging in 1993, which became CHS Hedging.
The internet, electronic trading and consolidation are the biggest changesin the grain markets since she began her career.
“You had to really search for your information, now it’s instantaneous,”Phyllis said. “If you wanted to know what the crops looked like, you had totake a picture.”
Like every summer, she is keeping her eye on the weather and its effectson the crops and market.
“If you’re in an area that’s had bad weather, you feel it tremendously,” saidPhyllis. Her family still operates an Illinois farm, but for the sake of “familyharmony” they have a hired farm manager.
Renae B. Vander SchaafThe Land Correspondent Renae B. Vander Schaaf lives
on a corn and soybean farm with her husband Dave out-side of Orange City, Iowa. The farm also has some chick-ens, Angus cows and Jersey cows. So they often have farm-fresh milk.
On a sunny, breezy day, she might be outside hanginglaundry on the line.
Renae also tends a vegetable garden, where she grows alot of the family’s food. Once a regular vendor at theOrange City Farmer’s Market, Renae still bakes fruit piesfor orders and keeps a local meat market supplied withfrozen unbaked pies for customers.
Blessed with six children, she has three sons and threedaughters, ages 18 to 32. One daughter married a farmerand lives a dozen miles up the road. Meanwhile two sonsfarm in South Dakota and one is married. She is definitely enjoying beinggrandma of four.
Renae accidentally entered journalism by writing a column and reportingfor a farm paper. In the past year, Renae took us to a 50th anniversary barndance in Jackson, Minn. She loves doing Back Roads features and has beenwriting for The Land for more than five years.
“I enjoy meeting readers of The Land. Their friendliness and zest for doingthe work they do always inspires me,” said Renae.
She is the author of “A Place of Refuge,” a historical novel that follows ayoung Dutch girl who calls the Iowa prairie home in 1869. Book two in theseries will be out at the end of the year. Visit A Place of Refuge Facebookpage, where Renae posts weekly pictures and comments from her farm.

Get to know your ‘Land Stars’
Sarah JohnsonFor more than 13 years, The Land readers have turned to
Sarah Johnson’s Cookbook Corner for the latest cookbookor new recipe. A “thank you” goes out to readers, churchesand community organizations who have submitted theircookbooks.
“Please send them,” Sarah said. “We are happy as a clamwhen they come.”
Sometimes she reviews a commercial cookbook that hasrelevancy to agriculture, but she prefers to support thesmall, local cookbooks that often raise money for a goodcause.
Sarah is a health care cook at a Mankato nursing home. Her three children are in their 20s now, but the Johnsoncrew and her husband Darrin are still the taste testersreaders know as her “Yums” — and occasional “Yucks.”
“Now my kids are willing to try a lot of things,” she said. “They know thatone bite of something won’t kill them. And it’s wonderful if you like it.”
Sarah’s favorite Cookbook Corner recipe is a quick spaghetti carbonara.“It’s very impressive and yet easy,” she said.Sarah is no food snob.“Heck no, I am not a gourmet cook. I can eat the whole spectrum,” Sarah said.
“I love those cheesy potatoes out of the box. And I sure love fancy food too.”Sarah is also a feature writer and What’s Cooking? columnist for Mankato
Magazine.
Lenae BulthuisLenae Bulthuis writes The Back Porch, musings about
faith, family and farming from the back porch of her corn, bean and sugar beet farm in west central Minnesota.
For the past 18 years, she has been sharing what’s in herheart and encouraging readers to be inspired in their ownlives. For her own inspiration and writing, she looks to theWord, prayer and the people in her life.
Married to farmer Mike Bulthuis, Lenae is mother tothree grown daughters and Nana to three grandchildren. The family farm also has hogs and a few cattle.
“I’m the gofer girl and encourager,” she said. “I could hurtsomebody if I drove large equipment. So this is just perfect.”
In addition to writing her column, Lenae is the curricu-lum writer and training manager for GEMS Girls’ Clubs. This international ministry to girls and women has over 900 clubs aroundthe world and stands for Girls Everywhere Meeting the Savior. The nonde-nominational club is similar to the Girl Scouts.
“I grew up in the program and my girls did,” she said. “I’m just passionatethat we mentor girls and introduce them to Jesus.”
Lenae works from her home office and travels to GEMS conferences tolead training events.
In the past year, Lenae has taken us to Cowboy Church, the family dinnertable, and the hospital after her husband broke his leg during harvest. Mikeis doing just fine these days and Lenae thanked her community, family andfriends for their support in a follow-up column.

Karen SchwallerSince 2012, The Land readers have laughed, cried and
connected with Karen Schwaller in her Table Talk column. Her down-to-earth stories tell the life of a farm womanwith heart and humor.
“I’ve been a farm girl for 50 some years,” she said.Karen grew up on a grain and livestock farm in Northwest
Iowa, attended college and lived in town for a year or twobefore she married Dave and went back to the farm for therest of her being. The Schwallers grow corn, soybeans andalfalfa and raise sheep on their farm near Milford, Iowa.
“No one is sorry that we don’t have hogs anymore,” shequipped. On loading day, the kids would be crying becauseloading hogs brings out the worst in people sometimes, buta doughnut on the way to the sale barn made everythingbetter.
Now Karen’s twin sons and daughter are in their 20s. The boys are farm-ing and have a cow-calf operation and her daughter is an agribusiness salesmanager.
Her role on the farm is keeping the farmer going, the family and houserunning, the finances in order, and being the main gofer person. Thenthere’s that “nasty laundry” and mowing that needs to get done. Still she isalways up for helping out with the down and dirty work when called: lamb-ing, calving, loading sheep, running the hay rake or baler.
“Stacking hay in the barn — now that’s a bra tester, especially on thosereally hot days,” said Karen.
A seasoned writer and speaker, she runs a business called Schwaller Agri-Stories.
“The farm woman is a really important person on the farm. Her role is sovaried,” Karen said. “And by writing about it, I feel like the rest of the worldcan understand the life we live.”
Her best columns are collected in her book “The Dirt: Family Life on anIowa Farm – Stories to Entertain and Inspire.” The books may be availablefor sale and signing at The Land’s Farmfest booth. To learn more aboutKaren, visit www.karenschwaller.com.
Tim & Jan KingTim and Jan King have been a journalistic
team for The Land since 1985. Tim conductsthe interviews while Jan takes notes andshoots photos. Then Tim writes the stories.
“It’s just a wonderful partnership,”Tim said.Tim and Jan live on an organic veg-
etable farm near Long Prairie, Minn., thatthey call Maple Hill Garden. They growlots of fruit including strawberries, applesand melons. In the last four years, theirson has added market lambs and pasture chickens to the place.
Tim and Jan write many stories on organic and sustainable farms. Thisyear, the Kings took us to Fox Farm Pork in Browerville, Minn., and a 200-acre cattle ranch near Staples, Minn. Tim is also the reader behind TheLand’s recurring Readers’ Retreat feature.
The duo may be best known to Land readers for their frequent contribu-tions to the Back Roads series, such as their visits to a treehouse in LongPrairie, Minn.; a grain mill in Caledonia, Minn.; a toy store in Kellogg,Minn., and many more.
“I just went to a pow wow on Leech Lake,” said Tim. “Doing it alone wouldbe a lonely experience, but doing it together, it’s a wonderful adventure withyour wife of 45 years.”
Carolyn Van LohCarolyn Van Loh is a history buff and retired English
professor from Pillsbury Baptist Bible College in Owa-tonna, Minn. She has been a correspondent for The Landsince 2009.
Married to farmer Dave Van Loh, Carolyn has two grownchildren, and five grandchildren ages 10 to 19. She lovesliving amidst the heritage of the family farm near West-brook in Cottonwood County, Minn.
“I was never going to marry a farmer and I didn’t. On our14th wedding anniversary we moved back to the Van Lohfamily farm when my father-in-law retired,” she said. “It’sone of the best things I ever did.”
Carolyn enjoys living in the country and admiring therural scenery in all seasons.
In the past year, she took readers to a Brazilian farm. Her most memorablestory was Christmas 2011 when she introduced readers to Mike and ConnieGunderson, a farm couple that had surmounted major medical challenges.
“None of my stories are what kind of seed to buy. I like the people stories,”said Carolyn.
She is the author of three books. “A Place of Interest: One Family’s Jour-ney to the Farmlands of Minnesota” tells the story of a community growingup on the prairie based on her mother-in-law’s diary. “Great Is Thy Faithful-ness” is a 50-year history of Pillsbury Baptist Bible College and “StrongRoots: The People of the Minnesota Farm Bureau” is a history of the organi-zation’s first 90 years.

Alan GuebertFor 22 years, Alan Guebert has been writing his weekly
Farm and Food File column, nationally syndicated in 70newspapers around the country. The Land has carried hiscolumn since 1994.
Along the way, Alan has written about big ag, politics, farm bills, farm policy, food labeling and genetically-modi-fied organisms among other controversial topics. Contraryto popular belief, he says he is not against “big ag,” butinsists the industry and farm groups could do things bet-ter.
“I do journalism. I do hard journalism so when I writesomething it’s what I believe and it’s what I can back upwith facts and figures,” he said. “No one’s lukewarm on me.They’re cold or they’re hot.”
Farming is constantly changing and Alan said farming isdue for another change — one in which the millions of people in this countrywho don’t farm are going to have something to say about where their foodcomes from.
“A good meal, 2,000 years ago — lamb chops, lots of red wine and a loaf ofbread. It was good enough for Julius Caesar,” Alan said. “And it’s still a goodmeal. Good food isn’t complicated, but boy we’ve sure made it that way.”
Alan recalled his mother’s canned peaches in which opening a jar in win-ter was “July in January.”
Guebert’s most beloved columns are memories and stories about growingup on a 720-acre, 100-cow southern Illinois dairy farm in the late 1960s.Those columns are now available in the book “The Land of Milk and UncleHoney” published by the University of Illinois Press.
He will be selling and signing “The Land of Milk and Uncle Honey” at TheLand’s booth at Farmfest on Thursday, Aug. 6.
Alan said he is fortunate to have so many stories to tell about life on thefarm — such as learning how to drive a tractor.
“I’ll betcha every farm kid remembers that,” said Alan.Alan’s daughter, Mary Grace Foxwell, conceptualized the book, as well as
collected the columns and edited it. Each column recalls and reflects on thepeople, food and values her father learned on the farm. She also wrote theepilogue that details her own memories of her father and lessons from hergrandparents’ farm.
There was no shortage of hard work on the farm, and Alan and his broth-ers worked alongside the hired men.
“You got up at 5 a.m. and milked with the hired man, Howard, thenworked all day in the fields and then you milked that evening,” he said.“That was a good day. It built character and responsibility and the willing-ness to get up tomorrow and do it again.”
Several stories center on Alan’s great Uncle Honey, who retired from hisin-town job to “help” his father on their farm. Uncle Honey was a gentlegiant, but a “throttle-breaking terror” on a tractor.
“A good day to Uncle Honey was mowing hay, leaving the farm, having alittle 7 Up or Budweiser and playing euchre,” Alan said.
So what would Uncle Honey say about Country of Origin Labeling, GMOsand Chipotle?
Uncle Honey would give a quick hand wave and say “Aaah” like the oldGermans.
“He’d nod and get on his Oliver 77 and go mow hay,” said Alan.
Alan Guebert is scheduled toappear at TheLand’s booth#2402 in AgTent I onThursday, Aug.6, from 9 a.m. -3 p.m.

Extremely high cropyields, combined with below-normal temperatures and awet harvest have farmers, grain elevators and othergrain handlers dealing withhigh-moisture corn andbeans — and experts areprojecting the deadliest yearfor grain bin deaths.
In 2014, the Minneapolis Star Tribune counted 12grain bin entrapments in Minnesota through Sep-tember.
Safety and Security Consultation Specialists arepartnering with Brock Grain Systems to conduct livegrain bin demonstrations and educational safetythis year at Farmfest. The demonstrations aredesigned to increase the awareness of the dangers ofengulfment in flowing grain and the safety proce-dures that can save lives.
Two Minnesota farmers were recently rescuedfrom entrapment accidents in grain bins. If the firstresponders did not have proper training and equip-ment, the farmers may not have been saved.
This demonstration offers critical education forproducers and first responders to make them awareof the specialized equipment training needed to res-cue someone entrapped in a grain bin. The chancesof surviving an engulfment are greatly increased if arescue tube is used.Grain bin dangers
Jack Volz, president of SASCS, noted the humanbody is far more dense than the grain, and will sinkto the lowest point.
“It’s just like being shrink-wrapped, and it’s con-stantly pushing against you like quicksand,” he said.“Most victims are completely submerged in seconds.Ninety-two percent of people fully engulfed in graindo not survive. If a man is buried in grain to hiswaist, it will take 625 pounds of force over his bodyweight to free him from the grain.”
The grain rescue tube was developed by Purdue Uni-versity. It consists of a round tube made of interlockingpanels. It’s jammed into the grain around the victim. This training is conducted for the fire and ambulancedepartments around the state of Minnesota.
SASCS will be at the Brock Grain Systems Farm-fest exhibit (Booth 620) doing live demonstrationsall three days. The group will be doing “rescues” eachday at 10 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. as well as at 1 p.m. and2:30 p.m. using volunteers from the crowd. Thedemonstration trailer is self-contained and has avideo camera and large screen TV to show what isgoing on inside the bin during the rescue. Plastic pel-lets are used instead of grain. The typical demon-stration takes from 30 to 60 minutes depending on
how deep a victim is drawninto the flow
“SASCS is honored tosupport this great event toeducate and save lives,”Volz said. “Our focus is tobegin to train all firstresponders on what to do
when they arrive on scene. Our goal is to decreasethe injuries and loss of life associated with grain binentrapments. If we keep one person from gettinghurt, we’ve done our part.”
