Students of Forest Lake State School Special Education Program will this year be enjoying their brand new playground which was officially opened at the close of the school term last year.
The new playground was funded by two successful grant applications; $32,000 from a government Gambling Grant and $28,000 from a Heritage Bank Community Grant. The remainder of the $100 000 needed for the new playground was funded by the school’s biennial fete held in 2012, which raised over $48 000, with $22 000 being committed to the playground. Other fundraising by the P&C was contributed from event throughout 2013.
The opening of the playground was marked by a whole school assembly where all who contributed were acknowledged and thanked, before cutting the ribbon on site and enjoying morning tea.
P&C Secretary, Felicity Compton said, “We could not have achieved this with out the involvement of community partnerships such as Heritage Bank, Local Government support and the tireless work of the school’s P&C, in particular Treasurer Amanda Carlton who wrote the two grant applications, and wider school community.

routine; noun - a sequence of actions regularly followed; a fixed program.
If you set new years resolutions, chances are you need to make those new things part of your routine. All the usual ones, such as, fitness, better eating, looking after yourself, or working towards finishing a project will require some sort of regular input in order to be accomplished.
I don’t know about you, but the word ‘routine’ has a negative ring to it for me. Maybe it’s just my personality which leans more towards spontaneity than structure, and more towards impulse than intentionality, but when I hear the word ‘routine’ I groan inwardly, and sometimes outwardly!
When you read the dictionary definition of the word, you’ll see that it’s not negative or remotely off putting at all. It’s merely the act of repeating a behaviour or exercise. See, it’s quite harmless really!
Why do I buck against the thing that will actually give my life a sense of order, and help me achieve the things I want to achieve?
Upon scrutiny, we see that routine makes up the life of every successful person. Tennis players certainly would know that routine practice makes them progress up the rankings. Musicians will agree that routinely working on their talent will increase their skill. And we all know that life runs far more smoothly if our kids have a good routine for before and after school!
So why do so many of us (yes, I am assuming I’m not alone in this!) have a problem with keeping on doing the same thing day after day?
Sometimes, I think it’s lack of results. If we’re trying to get fit, it can be hard to gauge our progress each day. If we’re trying to write a book, the slow incremental increase of that word count can seem non existent most days. If we’re adding activities into our day that will increase our mental health and well being, it’s hard to see those changes on a daily basis.
Day by day, it can feel like skipping the gym ‘just this one day’ won’t make a big difference; and that not writing those 300 words ‘just this one day’ won’t effect the final tally when you submit the manuscript to an editor; or being too busy for that one hour of meditation ‘just this one day’ won’t really effect our overall demeanour for the day.
The truth is though, the reason routines work and make a difference in our lives, is because their effects are accumulative.
You may remember an ad that used to be on TV, I can’t remember what for (clearly didn’t work too well then, did it!) but the catch phrase was, ‘it won’t happen overnight...but it will happen!’
If we try to remain focussed on the end goal and not on the single steps we take each day, before we know it, we’ll be where we want to be and our goal will be our reality.

The Golden Moon Festival is set to rise again on Saturday February 15th at Forest Lake Parklands from 4:30pm.
After the success of last year’s show, the organisers are working hard to ensure that the Golden Moon Festival heralds a positive start to 2014. The Golden Moon Festival aims to bring everyone together, awakening a communal and inner happiness.
This year, Food for Life, the organisers, have secured an international musical sensation straight from the UK. Jayadev John Richardson has captured audiences in over 15 countries with his soulful mantra choir. Engaging every single person in the audience, Jayadev gives each section a counterpoint of one of his beautiful, self- penned songs to sing – the result is a group of total musical novices singing like a professional chorus in minutes!
“He’s guaranteed to get everyone in the audience singing their hearts out,” says Sakhi Rai Das, after witnessing Jayadev’s performance in Brisbane two years ago. In addition, the Golden Moon Festival will include traditional dances, drum performances, a yoga demonstration and martial arts exhibition within their stage program. The surrounding stalls will have activities to keep children and adults entertained.
“The fashion stall was an incredible hit last year, and the lines at the food stall were never shorter than a few people!” said organizer Mcklein Javeri.
The fashion and food stalls will be open from 4.30pm whilst a free martial arts and dance class for children takes place on the main lawn. These stalls will continue to stay open as the stage program commences from 5.30pm.
For more information on the festival, please visit www.goldenmoonfestival.com or call Niti Sheth on 0432 439 144 for more information.

Silence and smiles are two of the most powerful tools.
Smiling is the way to solve many problems and Silence is the way to avoid many problems.
Did you know?
That is the question and it is a very good question with some interesting answers.
One of the main reasons that dentists recommend a clean and checkup every six months is to maintain good oral health. It really doesn’t matter that you brush and floss twice a day perfectly (are you really flossing twice a day?). Many people are more susceptible to tartar or calculus formation which means it needs to be cleaned off before it can do any harm to the foundation of your teeth. The foundation is your gums and jawbone. Without these your teeth would not stay in your mouth (HINT - this means your teeth fall out).
One of the problems with periodontal disease or gum disease is there are usually no symptoms (until the foundations have been damaged). Everyone knows what happens in a house or building when the foundations are damaged. Normally that means you need to carry out expensive restoration work or even completely rebuild depending on the damage. This is a bit harder to do with teeth once the foundations have been damaged. Luckily the foundations are fairly deep usually. Preventive maintenance is always less expensive than trying to fix something after the damage has been done.
There are different risks that your teeth, gums and jawbone have to endure. One is damage to the foundations (gum disease) as we have discussed, another is decay (that is like termites eating away at your house out of sight), still another is your bite or the way your teeth meet together.
Your teeth work like gears when your upper and lower jaws come together to eat or drink or swallow. If the gears are in harmony, then everything works well but if the gears aren’t working in harmony it can damage your teeth, gums and jawbone all together.
The human body is an amazing machine and it will tend to cope with this problem for a while but unfortunately there will come a time when the damage has been too great and the whole machine starts to collapse. It can be a big problem when that occurs.
Checking regularly can nip problems like these in the bud before they become big problems. If your mouth (teeth, gums, jawbone etc) were a car it would be worth about $250,000. I am fairly certain that anyone with a car like that would get their car serviced regularly. Luckily we don’t have to change the oil when you come in for the service on your mouth.
Everyone is different. Pretty obvious statement but it is definitely true of mouths. Some people may need to come more than every six months to maintain, some less than six months. Everyone thinks the condition of their teeth, foundations and gears stays the same. Unfortunately time and age cause things to deteriorate. Things don’t stay the same in your mouth no matter how much you think they do. It would be much nicer if they did.
If you are concerned about anything above or would like a checkup and clean give the friendly team at Lakedental a call on 3879 8999.
Why do I need to go to the dentist every six months?
Dear Editor,Whilst visiting Forest Lake recently as an interstate
tourist, I inadvertently lost my wallet when I went to the toilets.
Fortunately, a Good Samaritan handed it over to the Customer Service Centre at the Forest Lake Shopping Centre, who then cleverly rung up RACQ to contact me via my mobile to inform me that they have my membership card.
It is reassuring to know that there are people out there who do the right thing.
Thank you Forest Lake!Kim

For long time Forest Lake resident, Skye Smith, the opportunity to represent Australia at the Indoor Netball World Championships comes after a narrow defeat in the National Tournament in Perth late last year.
Having played netball since she was five years old, Skye is relishing the experience of playing netball for Australia in the competition that will see the team of five Queenslanders, three New South Walers, one Western Australian, and one Victorian travel to South Africa in May this year.
Skye, who is studying midwifery at the University of Queensland, needs to raise the cost of the trip which is around $4600.
“It would be great to gain some sponsorship,” said Skye. “My mum and dad have been amazing over the years and already sacrificed so much to help me get where I’m striving to go.”
Cr Angela Owen-Taylor donated $100 to Skye’s participation with the Queensland team and has pledged another $100 towards the Australian team trip.
If you are interested in sponsoring Skye’s trip, or offering a donation, please contact Skye by sending an email to [email protected].

When Tina Knox visited Pascoe Jewellers at Forest Lake Shopping Centre before Christmas to buy her own Christmas present from her husband, she didn’t realise the impact her actions would have.
She took the receipt from the purchase and used it to enter the centre’s holiday-of-a-lifetime competition.
The prize, valued at over $22,000, was for a trip for four to Santa Claus Village in Finland, complete with a reindeer sleigh ride and a trip to Santa’s Hideaway, followed by five nights in Paris and a four-day Disneyland Hopper Pass.
A holiday such as this was on Tina’s bucket list and she and her husband Robert had also discussed the possibility of a white Christmas in 2014. So when Tina received a call from Forest Lake Shopping Centre Marketing Manager Linda Loosley in early January to tell her she had won, she was completely overwhelmed.
“I never win anything,” Tina explained, “So, of course, my first thought was that the call was a prank. But when Linda assured me it wasn’t, the excitement really took hold.
“I was jumping around the kitchen and my husband and two daughters were in the background trying to work out what was going on. Everyone was very pleased I made that trip to Pascoe’s to buy my own present!
“We are completely overwhelmed and still can’t really believe we’ve won. It’s the kind of holiday we’ve always dreamt of taking and now it’s going to happen. We’re planning to travel in December this year.”
Tina and Robert and their two daughters, Jade and Tayla, are Forest Lake residents and regular visitors to the centre.
“We do all our shopping there; we love the place,” Tina explained. “We entered the draw many times but never guessed we would be the lucky ones to win.
“We’d like to wholeheartedly thank the retailers of Forest Lake for their generosity. We can’t believe they’ve given away such an incredible prize,” Tina added. “I haven’t stopped smiling since I heard the news and don’t think I will for some time to come.”

Long time Forest Lake resident, Kathy Williams, retired from her job as Chaplain of Grand Avenue State School at the end of the 2013 school year.
Kathy came to GASS as a volunteer school chaplain in 2005, taking on the job of SU Queensland Chaplain in 2007 where she has served the students and families of the GASS community for the last six years.
Starting a mentoring program, Partnering with Purpose, organising a visit from Melinda Tankard Reist and running the Fun Friends program are just some of the highlight of Kathy’s time at GASS.
“Being able to care for and support the children, helping sad faces become happy faces has been just wonderful,” said Kathy. “I feel that because of my faith, I am able to help those around me, and it’s been lovely to work with children and make them smile.
“Although, I am looking forward to having more time for catching up with friends, enjoying and working in my garden, reading, cycling, swimming and learning to play the guitar. My husband and I also have some plans for travel.”
Kathy will be replaced with Erin Mawhinney who worked with Kathy as a Vocational Placement one day a week throughout 2013, while studying to become a chaplain. “Erin has been doing a wonderful job and she has accepted the offer of the position in 2014. I am very pleased to be able to hand the reins over to such a capable and committed lady with a genuine love for children,” said Kathy.
Kathy was farewelled at the end of last term with a high-tea with staff, students and members of the community present to wish her well in her retirement.

The world of investment will always contain elements of risk in varying degrees. Sure, an investment in a mining venture in the Sudan may not be for the faint-hearted, and is certainly more risky than a term deposit with one of the major banks. However, they simply represent opposite ends of the risk continuum.
It is often assumed that an investment in fixed interest securities carries little or no risk. Surely the revenue stream in the form of interest payments will continue and help to subsidise the financial goals the investor may have set. Discounting the risk of partial or full default in repayment of the principal, typically indicated by the credit rating ascribed to the investment, one must consider interest rate risk. Of course, exchange rate risk will also accompany an investment in global fixed interest markets.
Enter the complex realm of valuation theory which I will try to keep as simple as the length of this article will allow. The value of a 10 year government bond today is essentially the sum of the present value of all the future nominal interest payments combined with the present value of the repayment of the principal at the end of the term. However, determining the present value requires the application of an interest rate, and typically the interest rate will be that which applies today on a similar investment.
What does this mean? If the interest rate on similar investments is higher than that which applied when you invested, the value of your investment will be lower. If you are earning a 4% nominal rate on a $1,000 security, your income will be $40. When interest rates are 5%, to earn that same amount of income of $40 requires only $800 to be invested. If someone was to purchase your investment they certainly would not want to pay you the face value of $1,000 because they could have invested only $800 and earned the same $40 as you are presently receiving. In reality, the calculations are a little more complex than this, but hopefully that example explains the basic concept.
So, if interest rates go up, the value of fixed interest securities, if sold today rather than being held to redemption, will fall. Conversely, if interest rates fall, the value of fixed interest securities held today will increase. It might sound a little perverse but it is nevertheless worth remembering – fixed interest investments such as government bonds can change in value.

Amongst the new pencil cases, exercise books and erasers, Cancer Council Queensland is urging parents to stock up on SunSmart essentials as a back-to-school priority.
Queensland has the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, and supplies that will protect children from the damaging effects of the sun should be back-to- school essentials.
Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said parents are being urged to stock up on SunSmart supplies to reduce their child’s risk of developing deadly skin cancer later in life.
“New shoes, lunchboxes and books have become back-to-school musts, with sunscreen and SunSmart supplies often falling by the wayside,” Ms Clift said.
“Our State has the highest rates of skin cancer in the world – sun protection needs to be a priority every time we walk out the door.
“We know that most sun exposure occurs in childhood years and that this exposure contributes significantly to the risk of developing cancer later in life.
“The good news is that skin cancer is one of the most preventable types of cancers – we can reduce our worrying skin cancer trends by taking a few simple precautions and practicing SunSmart behaviour.”
In Queensland, around 136,000 new skin cancer cases are diagnosed each year (3000 melanoma and 133,000 non-melanoma skin cancers).
In Brisbane alone, around 1096 people are diagnosed with melanoma each year.
Ms Clift said the start of a new school year provided the perfect opportunity to challenge kids and young adults to think of new ways to make their daily school routines more SunSmart.
“Make being SunSmart a healthy habit, just like eating breakfast!” Ms Clift said.
“For best protection, you need to combine the five recommended behaviours: Slip on sun protective clothing, Slop on SPF 30 or above water-resistant, broad-spectrum sunscreen, Slap on a broad-brimmed hat, Seek shade and Slide on wrap-around sunnies.”
For more information on reducing your skin cancer risk or Cancer Council Queensland, visit www.cancerqld.org.au or call the Cancer Council Helpline on 13 11 20.

Just as you look after your teeth to prevent dental disease, you also have to care for your pet’s teeth too. Maintaining healthy gums is important and is the starting point of any dental care program. The gums protect the underlying tissues and jawbone that anchor and support the teeth in your pet’s mouth.
Gum disease, or periodontal disease, is started by a build-up of plaque. Plaque is made up of food particles, saliva and bacteria. It sticks to the tooth surface and, if not removed, will calcify into tartar (or calculus). This takes place above and below the gum line and over time can lead to the destruction of the supportive tissues and jawbone.
More than 85% of dogs and cats over four years old have some form of periodontal disease. Look out for the signs of bad breath, discoloured teeth, loose teeth, pawing at the mouth, bleeding gums, receding gums, dental abscesses and reluctance to chew or eat that may alert you to the presence of this disorder. Teeth will always be checked by your vet from an early age at your pet’s regular health checks.
How do I prevent gum disease? It’s easy - good oral hygiene! Large dogs will respond well
to the inclusion of large, raw marrowbones in their diet such as beef shins, lamb shanks or brisket flaps, combined with biscuits. Small dogs and cats prefer raw chicken wings and chewy biscuits. If your pet will not chew bones or they cause any concerns (such as vomiting, constipation) then consult your vet for the best options.
There are a number of specific dental care products available that will further minimise plaque. Small, soft tooth-brushes and pet toothpaste can be used to brush the gum line or rawhide chews with impregnated pet toothpaste can be used as a cleansing treat.
Despite the best dental care program, most pets will still need to have their teeth professionally cleaned using an ultrasonic cleaning unit and a dental polisher by their vet. This is because pets cannot brush their mouth clean twice daily. Your vet will advise when this is necessary at your pet’s regular check-ups as some need more attention than others.
Often when dental disease is discovered, permanent damage is already done and teeth may need removal. If your pet is prone to dental disease, treatment and maintenance at an early stage may save teeth. It is much easier to clean teeth regularly than to have to extract diseased teeth when things have gone too far.
Maintenance of the teeth and gums should be part of your pet’s preventative health care program just as vaccinations and parasite control are.
Looking after your pets teeth and gums
Grand Avenue State School will benefit from flashing lights this year, improving safety for students and motorists.
“Grand Avenue State School is on track to receive flashing lights as early as March to alert motorists they’re approaching a school zone,” Member for Algester Mr Shorten said.
“School lights are being installed at schools where there is a significant crash history, high level of car and pedestrian traffic, higher speed limits or visibility problems.
“The State Government is committed to the safety of all Queenslanders on our roads, especially our littlest ones, and flashing school lights will ensure an extra safety boost around school zones.
“The signs act as an extra reminder for parents and other motorists to slow down in and around school areas while young Queenslanders made their way to and from school.
“Motorists need to remember children are unpredictable when crossing streets and by slowing down you are diffusing a potentially dangerous situation.”
The State Government has committed $10 million over four years to install flashing school light at over 300 school zones.

Family Focuswith Mark Mackay
In the 2005 movie Batman Begins, there is a tense meeting between flamboyant billionaire Bruce Wayne and Rachel Dawes. After confronting him about his actions and Wayne’s protest that he’s a different guy underneath, Dawes says, “Bruce, deep down you may still be that great kid you used to be, but it’s not who you are underneath, it’s what you do that defines you.” That’s the truth of it. People will identify what’s important to us by what we do.
We can say that being generous is important but if we never give generously to charity or others in need, our kids will reach a different conclusion. One of the great challenges of being around children (whether as a parent, or a care-giver or just as an adult member of our community) is that kids are watching us to see what we think by watching what we do.
It’s not all negative, though. Some of the best lessons we teach our kids are not with words but by our actions. As the old saying goes, “Values are caught rather than taught.” If we live out good values, our kids will see them and “catch” them. If we show generosity and hospitality, they will see these as values worth adopting. If we stand up for justice, they will seek justice.
Last year, our family went on a holiday to the USA with another family. I noticed that whenever we went to a diner, the mum of the other family would buy a little extra food and give it to the homeless person that was always sitting at the front door of every diner we went to. She didn’t make a song and dance about it – she just did it. The really cool thing that happened was that my kids saw her example and wanted to show similar generosity. The simple act of generosity and kindness became an example my kids wanted to follow – “values are caught rather than taught.”
The Bible says, “In everything set them an example by doing what is good.” (Titus 2:7) Only after giving this instruction to set an example by “doing” does this passage go on to instruct us to teach well. Our kids will firstly learn from our actions.
I doubt this is new information to anyone, so what can we do practically to put this into practice? Here are some thoughts:
• Acknowledge when we get it wrong;• If we struggle in a particular area, put some plans
in place to deal with those struggles;• When we do something, ask ourselves, “How will
kids understand this?”God bless you as you take steps to model great values!

The Dragons AFL football team are raring to kick goals for the 2014 season. The club has set their sights on doubling the number of teams fielded this year and hope to have a team of under 6 players (a first for the club), two under 8 teams, a under 9s and 10s.
“We want people to know we are still here, still teaching kids how to play footy,” said club president, Annette Densham. “We offer a wonderful family environment – as a small club, our volunteers know the names of each kid. We take the time to get to know the families of the children who play with us.”
The club will be holding a come and try day at CJ Greenfields on Saturday 1 March from 10am to 11am. Newcomers will be introduced to the basics of footy – how to hand ball, kick and mark the ball, while parents will be able to ask questions and find out more about the club.
“An existing aspect of the 2014 season for us will be running our canteen out of an actual building,” said Annette. “We received a Gambling Community Benefit grant three years ago and despite many challenges, have finally finished construction of the building. The canteen is an important part of our fundraising so having a professional set up is wonderful.”
The AFL season starts in April and runs through to September. Teams play every Saturday at home and around the western suburbs – from Park Ridge to Ipswich to Taringa. The cost to play for the season is $125 for all age groups with a 10% discount for two or more children.
For more information, please contact Annette on 0478 718 041.

50+Club Updateby Maureen S.
January was the month of relaxation and getting over the festive season. Many grandparents were looking after the grandchildren or going on holidays and taking it easy to build up their energies for another busy year with the club.
2013 was full of activity for the club, as we visited some great venues around Brisbane and further afield. Venues such as the Ginger Factory, Governors House, an overnight to Stanthorpe and boat trip on the Brisbane River just to name a few. Mid-year there was Christmas in July at Caloundra RSL, which was a great success.
The committee organised the outings from suggestions of members; they try to vary it as much as possible to cater for all. Prices are kept to a minimum, making it easier for most members to enjoy the trips, and if members patronize outings well, the club will try to subsidise a few as a thank you to the members.
If you are new to the area, just retired or are at a loose end, why not contact Kay our Treasurer or Activities Officer Les, whose details are below, for more information. It’s a great way to meet people and make new friends. All you have to do is make one phone call or write one email and you’re on your way to a new adventure. Maybe we’ll see you at one of our meetings very soon.
Forest Lake 50+ Club meet the third Friday of each month at the Queensland Lions Soccer Club, Pine Road, Richlands at 10.30am, and new members are always welcome.
For more information on the club and its activities, please contact Kay (Treasurer) on 3278 9046 or Les (Activities Officer) on 3279 9449 or mobile 0466 377 618, or email [email protected]
Date claimers for the next three meetings are February 21st, March 21st and April 11th 2014. Please note that the April meeting is one week early because it clashes with Good Friday.

The 2014 Calendar has something for everyone. Why not come along to see what we can offer you? First event on the calendar is Chinese New Year dinner at The Red Door on Saturday 8 February at 6.30pm.
This dinner was very well attended in 2013 with plenty of laughs and delicious food. We have some fun organised for our Branch Meeting on Wednesday 12 February.
Our final event for 2013 was our annual Christmas Lunch and meeting held at the Richlands Tavern on Wednesday 11th December. A great day with plenty happening. Huge raffle with lots of lucky winners, lucky door prize, birthday celebrations, a great entertainer and all this followed by a wonderful buffet lunch with great variety and delicious desserts. Our private room was beautifully decorated with Christmas trimmings. Everyone was in fine spirits getting ready for the Festive Season. Anthony Shorten and Angela Owen-Taylor, who have been great supporters of our group, called in to wish us all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. We would also like to acknowledge the great support we receive from Bernie Ripoll, Annastacia Palaszczuk and Milton Dick.

After celebrating 25 years of service to the community last year, the Kiwanis Club of Brisbane enters 2014 with new direction. Under the guidance of Anita Lennox and her team, the club will be looking to continue supporting charities locally, nationally and internationally, and to continue with our support, the Board will be giving a priority throughout the year to increasing the club membership.
In 2013, the club members raised about $45,000 supporting the needs of charities within our communities. There is an ever increasing requirement for assistance from service clubs such as Kiwanis and to maintain our support, the club must continue to increase its membership base.
The club started the New Year with three new members, who were inducted last month by the President, pictured from left Anita Lennox, Reianna Vercoe, David Read and Kathy Dunne, whose first commitment to the community was helping out at the Kiwanis BBQ for the Salvation Army Christmas Carols at Peter Lightfoot Oval, Middle Park.
Kiwanis welcomes new members for the year
I can’t believe it is February already! Just a friendly reminder to be aware and alert around our schools as the new school year has begun. The safety of our children is paramount to us all, that is why I am so pleased to be able to advise that flashing school zone lights will be installed on Grand Avenue in front of the school to improve the safety of students and parents.
You may remember that the State Government committed $10 million over four years to install flashing school lights at over 300 school zones.
From personal experience, I know the zone outside of Grand Ave State School gets very busy and the addition of flashing lights will be a significant safety boost.
I know there are members of our community who are doing it tough, so I was very happy to meet with Apostle Emmanuel Tetty of the Dominion International Worship Centre who briefed me on their A4 Community Care Services.
Dominion International has just moved into new premises in Pallara and offers a range of community services. A4 Community Services is opened Monday to Thursday 10am – 2pm and Fridays 9.30am – 12.30pm and can be contacted on 0432 095 732.
I welcome Apostle Emmanuel and A4 Community Services to the Algester Electorate and look forward to hearing about the good works that they will do in the Forest Lake community.

Congratulations to the new school leaders, who have just taken up their roles in each of our local schools. I am sure you will serve your school and fellow students well. These young people, as role models, often take part in community events in their own time and their commitment to service is commended.
As we are still not completely out of the summer storm season, I remind all residents you are still able to sign up to the Early Warning Emergency Alert notification. Forest Lake has one of the areas with the highest number of residents taking positive action to be prepared and I encourage those who have already signed up to let your friends, family and neighbours know. We can all follow the Scout’s motto “Be Prepared”. To sign up via internet go to www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/community-support/emergency-management/brisbane-early-warning-service/index.htm
Over the summer holiday break, a lot of work was undertaken on the Forest Lake Sportsfields to enhance the playing surface for Rugby Union and the running track for Little Athletics. A major irrigation system has been installed to improve the quality of the grounds and this is linked to the water tanks installed last year.
We have now seen another successful season drawing to a close for Forest Lake Little Athletics (Falcons) and I am proud of the growth of this new sporting club in our local community. Only a few years ago I attended the first meeting to get this club off the ground and I am pleased that today it is thriving and providing great benefits for our youth.
March will see the return of Rugby Union to the Sportsfields with the launch day scheduled for 15 March. As Club Patron, I encourage young people interested in playing Rugby Union to attend the launch day and find out all about the Forest Lake Wasps.
Forest Lake is a great community, I look forward to continuing to work together with many local groups and individuals, and for you, to make it even better.

Hello ReadersWe are very excited about The Rite Journey program for our Year Nine students to be introduced in 2014. Students in the Middle School at St John’s are provided with the very best personal development opportunities to support the unique emotional and physical development of their early teenage years.
The Rite Journey provides unique educational programs designed to support the development of self-aware, vital, responsible, respectful and resilient adults. By raising young people’s consciousness about transitioning from child to adult and having conversations with them about what really matters, we can assist in guiding their journey into adulthood.
The specially developed program includes discussion and reflection, and development of strategies which support the transition to adulthood. In today’s society, sociologists believe that boys are generally under-fathered and that the media displays role models who are making poor choices and that it presents our girls with unrealistic roles models. We know that young people spend up to 30 hours a week in front of computer screens at the expense of human connection. This issue alone exposes young people to a massive amount of information which is awash with miss- information. Young people are negotiating a world which
is significantly different to that in which their parents have grown up in.
Our teachers have undertaken special training to deliver the year long program and are looking forward to introducing The Rite Journey into the personal development program. You can learn more about this at www.theritejourney.com.au
Together with our personal development program our Future Thinkers Extension program, which also starts in Year Nine, sets the scene for a successful career for St John’s students. If you would like to know more about how our programs can prepare your child for their future, please contact our Registrar, on 3372 0176 for your personalised tour of the College. Alternatively, our next College on Display for Year Seven to Twelve is Wednesday, 12 March 2014 from 4 pm to 7 pm.
Scholarship applications for 2015 are now open but close 28 February 2014. Please refer to the

With the festive season and holidays now in our memory and a new school year has commenced for many, I suppose one could say ‘life is returning to normal!’
Didn’t we have some hot days during last month? The garden club committee has been working ‘behind the scenes’ in arranging outings, exciting bus trips and interesting guest speakers (new ones to our club as well as favourites from previous years) for all gardeners.
The first bus trip will be a Gold Coast Sea and Garden Escape trip. What a great day has been planned as in the morning we will travel around the Broadwater enjoying a two hour boat cruise while taking in the picturesque scenery of the Gold Coast waterways. After lunch at Jupiter’s Hotel & Casino, the afternoon will be spent exploring the 31 hectare gardens of the Gold Coast Regional Botanical Gardens. This hidden treasure will undoubtedly be enjoyed by all. If you have not yet received a flyer, please call Heather (phone 3879 2129) or Jill (phone 3372 6800). Flyers will be available at our meeting. Cost for this wonderful trip will be $45 for members and $50 for guests. Book early as we are limited in numbers for the cruise. Don’t be the one to miss out!
With more and more people moving to apartment living, there’s increasing interest in learning about balcony gardening. As with any type of gardening, it’s important to choose the right plant for the right spot, but there are some basic principles to follow that will help achieve success. Chances are your balcony will be on just one side of the building, so you’ll need to assess the positives and negatives of this aspect. Check to see how much sun the balcony receives. If there’s a lot of sun, you’ll be able to grow plants such as citrus (choose dwarf varieties), small vegetables, roses, hibiscus and geraniums. Apartments on the shady side will be better suited to foliage plants such as cordylines, crotons and dracaena. Morning sun positions suit gardenias, hydrangeas and leafy vegies such as baby lettuce. The most difficult position is likely to be that facing due west as it will receive hot afternoon sun.
I know we like visiting many of the gardens in the Australian Open Garden Program and I have heard a whisper that later on in the year, there will be two of our Forest Lake gardens joining the program. Watch for further details!
At first meeting for 2014 we will have Bernard Yorke advising us on the secrets of growing begonias. I hope to see you there and catch up for a chat over a cuppa.

STATE MEMBER FOR INALAFROM THE DESK OF Annastacia Palaszczuk MP
Annastacia Palaszczuk MP, Member for Inala with local community representatives at the annual Community Christmas Thank-you Function.
As another year begins, it’s timely to look back and reflect on the highs and lows of 2013. Last year with much of our state under water and many of our fellow Queenslanders again suffering the heartbreak of flooding. But once again, communities and individuals rallied together to help one another throughout this difficult and dangerous time.
Locally we saw many achievements, including the opening of the new Springfield Central Station in December which has thankfully alleviated some of the car-parking issues at the Richlands Station. Another highlight saw many of our local educators, including several Glenala State High School staff, receive high honours in the Queensland College of Teachers’ Excellence in Teaching Awards.
And we saw our local heroes, the people who volunteer in our community day in, day out, continue their hard work to ensure our community is the best it can be. As always, those volunteers deserve our thanks and appreciation.
The electorate of Inala is a thriving corner of our city – a vibrant, eclectic, multicultural community and an area that I’m proud to represent. I look forward to the year ahead and the joys and challenges it will bring.
I am always here to listen and help in any way I can. If I can be of assistance to you in 2014, please do not hesitate to contact my electorate office on 3372 3207. I wish everyone a happy and safe 2014.

Probus ended their 2013 year with a Christmas function at the Mt. Ommaney Lodge. There was a new take on the traditional fare which was enjoyed by everyone. Then came some fun.
Tall, svelte Kevin played Santa and although with the aid of the traditional costume he remained the proverbial example of the old world’s image of a typical Aussie - tall and lean. He did a superb job though and was ably assisted by Marge, who was the ageing, stooped and shuffling Mrs Kringle. She handed out chocolates to the “good children” and the special ones received extra.
A special thanks was recorded to Annastacia Palaszcuk and Milton Dick for their donation of large Gift Baskets to the Club. Certificates of Appreciation and Loyalty were presented to those Probians who had celebrated a decade of membership.
A luncheon was planned for New Year’s Eve but the extreme weather played havoc with attendance.
A very special thanks has to go to Lyn and Val for planning and organising not only this successful function but an extraordinary year of interesting and enjoyable activities.
The Dinner group headed by Brian and Zoe organised a gastronomic meeting to tickle our culinary buds in January at Diamantes in Forest Lake. Apart from an interest in food, we all like to support our local businesses.
Probians are looking forward to another year of fun, friendship and frolicking! Come and join us if you are retired, semi-retired and young at heart. We welcome both male and female members. We meet the second Tuesday of every month at the Forest Lake Hotel at 10am.
For more information, please refer to page 28 of this edition.
Forest Lake Probus Club Update
by Marge Breitenbach
Retirement - everybody’s doing it - but Probus does it better.
If you love hunting for a bargain or just enjoy strolling through the markets at a leisurely pace on a Sunday morning, then the Markets on Grand is for you.
After a very successful Twilight market in November last year, the regular markets start back on Sunday February 9, from 8am to 1pm.
They will then continue every second Sunday of each month through 2014. Held at Grand Avenue State School, the markets have an increasing number of stalls, which means there’s something for everyone.
The markets directly raise funds for Grand Avenue State School and continues to grow as a great community event for the whole family.
Markets on Grand start again this month
