PREFACEWe proudly present you this Trendbook made by the International Lifestyle Studies 2xcell team of 2017-2018. With this book we hope to inspire you and give you some insights in a few important and interesting trends.
Since a few years, International Lifestyle Studies has given 2xcell students the opportunity to give and create trendtours for the Dutch design Week; the biggest design event in Northern Europe.
This year’s team exists of eight enthusiastic and motivated students that have worked hard to create this book. In the last few weeks we have spent our time gathering information, doing research, spotting trends and writing. This process mainly existed of discussing with one another, working together and helping each other out.
This Trendbook is made with great help and expertise from our teachers Bodil Jurg, Rudy van Belkom and our mentor Joost Stegeman. We are very grateful and would like to thank them for their time and support. They have helped us grow in our trend skills and have provided us with the right feedback and criticism to get to the best result.
We feel honored and we are looking forward to hosting you during a tour and make it a memorable experience. You can find us at our stand at ‘het Klokgebouw’ on Strijp S in Eindhoven, from Sunday 21st until Sunday 29th of October. The tours will be held in Dutch and English, and are available for all Dutch Design Week visitors.

The world as we know it is changing constantly. Robots which are getting increasingly smart are becoming part of our everyday lives. The boundaries between humanity and technology are blurring. Natural disasters are more violent and frequent than ever. Our increasingly busy schedules leave no time for boredom. Smart technology inspired by nature helps us create a more sustainable way of producing. What do these innovations and developments mean for the future?
With this Trendbook we try to give insight in our present society and its developments. It shows five future proof trends that are driven by shifts in society. Per trend we explain the essence, and give insight in the values and needs that drive it. We also explain why the trend is relevant at the moment and what this might bring for the future. Every trend consists out of three signals we have spotted. These signals are

Supermanification aims to transform and perfect the human body by developing and using sophisticated technology. We see an important shift from solving medical issues to improving a healthy person into a ‘superhuman’. The line between restoration of bodily functions and enhanced performance is blurring. The focus is no longer only on solving existing problems but also on perfecting healthy bodies. With the use of advanced medical technology, such as implementing cyborg-like components, we are reaching beyond the boundaries of the human body. Ethical questions arise around this subject: how far will we go to become the best version of ourselves? What role does technology play and what are the boundaries in the combination with humanity?
Trying to be the best you can be is part of human nature. We are expecting a lot from ourselves and are always looking for innovation (Kreek, n.d.). The development of technology is speeding up and gives us possibilities to enhance not only our surroundings, but also ourselves. It has become increasingly difficult to define the limitations of the human body as we are able to create our own definitions of perfection.

Bryan Johnson, founder of startup Kernel, is developing a futuristic device to increase human intelligence: a chip that can give your brain a boost. This device is designed to make the communication between brain cells easier by hacking the neural code that enables our brain to store and recall key information. The chip will correct false signals to reduce cognitive impairment and will help people with dementia. It could also improve memory of healthy people and make it possible to never forget anything ever again (Mannes, 2016). This would make agendas and notes overrated.

The Nucleus 7 is the first mass-market cyborg enhancement. It connects the technology used for iPhones with the technology for hearing implants. It also gives people with hearing loss their perception of sound back. It gives them the chance to make phone calls, listen to music in high-quality sound and have FaceTime calls streamed directly to their implant. For now, it is only available to iPhone users because the Cochlear implant connects to the Iphone sound stream (Koetsier, 2017). It can also be used by people without a hearing impairment to be able to focus better on for example conversations.

These 3D-printed prosthetic arms are more affordable than ever and are available to a wide audience. The Deus Ex video game franchise has been the inspiration for these arms. It is not only suited for amputees, but also for researchers and ‘hobbyists’ who are fan of the Deus Ex series. The arms are fashionable and produced with high quality. Both arms, the Adam Jensen and the Titan arm, are metal grey with gold. The bionic arms use sensors to imitate the human arm but every movement has even more detail and is more controllable than a healthy human arm. (Summers, 2016). With this tool we are able to perfect our arms, even the ones working well.

Empathy is one of the abilities which distinguishes humans from everything in this world, also from technologies such as robots. But what if digital technology is learning how to be empathic as well? Digital Empathy shows a new way of communication between humans and technology, where technology can understand the person’s mood and react to his or her feelings.
Living without technology is unthinkable in this present society. It brings comfort, health and pleasure. Nevertheless, we seem to miss the soft and social skills in technological devices and software, such as empathy and creativity (The Medical Futurist, 2017). At this time, we are developing digital technology that is able to fulfill our needs and solve our mental pains (Van Kralingen, 2016). But why let technology only solve our mental problem when it is possible to make us feel comfortable and understood as well. We want to feel at peace and in harmony with the technology around us. Through the development of the information society, we see that technology gets personalized and empathic. With personal input, digital technology is able to understand, respond and improve our mood better than ever (Duivestein et al., 2014).

The Laier Speaker is designed by Jihye Lee. Laier uses artificial intelligence to get to know your state of mind, based on the music you like and play. The speaker has four semi-transparent ‘emotion panels’ in different colours. Based on the song, Laier arranges the panels in a specific way, creating a unique visual. When designing the speaker, JiHye Lee was inspired by a scene of the film ‘Her’. In this scene, the main character finds peace of mind when his intelligent computer operating system Samantha plays him a song appropriate to his mood and environment. The visual aspect of Laier creates a comforting and meaningful experience with every song, which helps enhance the mood of the user (PDF Haus, n.d.).

Creators: Stanford psychologists and AI experts, 2017
A team of Stanford psychologists and Artificial Intelligence experts created an empathic chatbot for Facebook Messenger. Woebot helps you monitor and improve your mood. The chatbot talks about mental health and wellness. Woebot sends you videos and other useful tools depending on your mood and needs at that moment. This chatbot is capable to understand your feelings and react to your state of mind without asking for it. The therapeutic conversations that Woebot provides are based on Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (Woebot, 2017).

Creator: Lectorate Architecture in Health, 2017
The ‘Empathic Home’ is a smart home that wants to improve your quality of life. The model home that has opened this year is used for testing. The first empathic homes are to be opened in 2040. The home ‘knows’ you and reacts to your needs, which is made possible by intelligent technology in the home, such as sensors. Amongst other things, it has a smart floor that warns you when you are about to fall. The design and the interior also stimulates the occupants to be active and to keep moving. The empathic home can take over tasks that are traditionally done by informal caregivers. This allows elderly people to continue living independently (Empathische Woning, 2015).

The effects of climate change will only become more drastic. For example, if we do not make a change we will eventually run out of fossil fuels. It is important to take action and treat our planet better. An effective way of doing just that is looking at nature and using its smart materials and efficient processes in the design of our products, instead of only taking and using nature for our own benefit. We are ready to learn from nature and we feel a change has to be made.
High Tech Nature is about the need for innovative concepts and products that are inspired on the 3.8 billion years that nature has spent on research and development. Humanity has a big influence on the planet: we all leave an ecological footprint whether it is big or small. It is getting harder and harder to avoid exhausting resources with our population increasing quite rapidly: in 2050 we will be close to 10 billion people (NOS, 2017). It will also have a negative influence on our physical and mental health, and our overall quality of life (Clayton Whitmore-Williams et al., 2017). The consumer is willing to make a change in his consuming behaviour and wants to take responsibility. It is time to learn from nature and copy their smart aspects instead of only take things out of it.

French designer and scientist Sandra Rey and her team have developed a concept where bioluminescent bacteria will light up our cities. They have observed closely how this process works and have created a new technique for implementing it. By taking genetic material which is found in bioluminescent animals and using this in a common and harmless bacteria it is possible to create new and more sustainable alternatives for city lighting. The good thing about these bacteria is that they are harmless and that they multiply rapidly. Another positive factor is the impact on the environment will be much less drastic. This form of lighting will make the cities a more sustainable environment for its inhabitants. Since the glow from the bacteria will not be as bright as conventional lighting, the light pollution will decrease. This form of bioluminescent lighting could be used for shops and public areas (Mudde, 2017).

This new wind turbine was designed by looking closely at the motion of a hummingbird’s wings, which was effectively mimicked. Instead of blades, it is equipped with flapping wings that convert kinetic energy into green electricity in a highly efficient way. The Tyer Wind generates energy during both downstroke and upstroke. It does not need as much space as traditional wind turbines, which has a positive effect on the way our landscape looks and the integration of wind turbines (www.tyerwind.com). The Tyer Wind Generator is the answer for a more sustainable alternative for energy.

Dan Widemair wants to demonstrate the reality of a completely new way of manufacturing textiles, one that has nearly unlimited potential for innovation and also produces a sustainable product. His team has developed a new way to create silk by mimicking nature. After a complex process the fibers can be knitted into a tie. At a molecular level it is spider silk made by human hands (Arthur, 2017).

Tools that stimulate us to make time to be bored again
Our increasingly busy schedules do not leave any room for boredom. Most of us are living in the fast lane and are always busy, even though there are only 24 hours in a day. We feel guilty immediately if we do not have something to do. We associate doing nothing with irresponsibility and wasting our time. As it turns out, it is healthy to sometimes do nothing at all.
With the pressure to achieve success and the digital technology which has our attention all the time, we no longer have moments where we do nothing at all. Boredom is getting a new meaning. It is definitely needed in our lives to escape from time pressure, which has a drastic effect on our wellbeing. Being bored also helps to stimulate creativity. We are increasingly aware of our performance society and the effect of time pressure on our overall mood. Personal growth and insight are more likely to emerge when we allow ourselves periods of uninterrupted time (Kets De Vries, 2014). Let’s make time and appreciate it, live slow and feel free to be bored again.

New on the market is ‘slow TV’. A perfect example is this eight-hour movie that is full of slow motion images of sheep. It helps you relax and the director wants to stimulate you to make time to do virtually nothing at all. Quite a challenge in a world of stress and a constant flow of information. How To Waste Your Time is a website that encourages visitors to do absolutely nothing. There is a stopwatch on your screen that shows the time you ‘waste’ visiting this website. When you stop the stopwatch, an encouragement or fun fact about the amount of time you just wasted will appear on the screen. How To Waste Your Time is a perfect way to relax and take a break from the notifications and other stimuli technology gives us (Pohl, 2017).

Whenever we find ourselves having a bit of time where nothing is scheduled, we feel a constant compulsion to do something useful or productive. The exhibition ‘Het Zalig Nietsdoen’ challenges visitors to do nothing at all and just relax. Twenty-five designers from all over the world show their design which encourages visitors to make time to be bored by doing nothing. The exhibition took place at the Kranenburgh museum in Bergen, from the 8th of June until the 24th of September (Kranenburgh, 2017).

Climate change has a major impact on this earth. It is causing all kinds of natural disasters that are occurring more often and are becoming more violent. Disaster Independency are tools that ensure self-sufficiency before and during these natural disasters.
Disasters are becoming a more frequent phenomenon (Jones, 2016). When these hazard events occur they do not only have effect on individuals but also on community functions and organizations. The access to power, water, transportation and social services will no longer be available during and after a natural disaster (Paton & McClure, 2013). We want to be prepared in case of emergency and we are taking matters into our own hands. Tools that help us maintain control give us a sense of security and give us the possibility to be self-reliant (Kay, 2016).

With the Mizusion lamp you are able to generate light with the use of saltwater. It is the renewal of the standard doomsday lamp which generates power from hand-cranking motions. The Mizusion lamp allows you to have light without having to move your arm constantly, which allows you to focus on survival. The necessary fuel is saltwater from the ocean or just a mix of table salt and water. It is the perfect light source for a doomsday preparation. The running time depends on the portions of the salt-and-water mix. Hitachi Maxell claims the full load of the mix is supposed to keep it running for three days (Coolthings, 2017).

The spit battery is a battery that will activate when you spit on it or let it make contact with a few drops of dirty water. This battery can be used in extreme conditions where other batteries do not function. The spit battery is paper-based and is powered by bacteria that generate power within minutes of adding saliva. Because the battery works on spit or on a few drops of dirty water, one can easily generated energy in major distress. In this way one can use the generated energy to get help, for example, to save himself and others (Science Daily, 2017).

Heroic Helpers is a learning app to train children how to react when disaster strikes. With this app children and their family are prepared for disasters, since they are unfortunately more common nowadays. With the use of virtual reality, cool characters, early warnings, fun games and a safety locater the creators want to prepare children in case of a disaster. The app will help children to be less afraid in emergency circumstances by preparing them. Whenever disaster strikes they know what to do and what not to do. Besides teaching the kids it helps the parents to talk about all kinds of emergencies and disasters. The campaign is funded at Kickstarter (Jammoo, 2017).
