A Master Class in Memoir by Mardi May

When you book in for a master class you know it will mean a couple of days of hard work. At Rachel Robertson’s Memoir Master Class, this expectation was met and exceeded. Over two weekends, with a scatter of days between for further application, Rachel guided her band of aspiring memoirists through every aspect of memoir writing.

The term ‘memoir’ was a large umbrella sheltering our wide diversity of interests, which even extended to a collection of goat stories. Every aspect included writing exercises and a high level of feedback, not only from Rachel, but from members of the group who had quickly formed a bond.

Under Rachel’s skillful leadership, what we contributed to the class was enhanced, honed and taken away as our reward, together with a folder of handouts and reading material. Another reward many of us took home was Rachel’s novel, ‘Reaching One Thousand’, a perfect example of all she had taught us.

Our projects may not make it to a shelf in Dymocks, but they will be the best they can be with the benefit of our shared experience.

What others thought of Rachel’s Master Class:

‘I wrote my first chapter in 10 minutes.’

‘Rachel covered individual concerns and worked the workshop around them.’

‘Motivation was really increased. Great to share work with others on the journey.’

‘Very versatile.’

‘I came away positive and more informed.’

‘Great!’
