The Kress Building—417. S. Gay Street.

Built in 1925, S.H Kress & Company had more than 250 stores in the southern and western United States. No two Kress stores were alike, but each shared a few characteristics: the logo, the façade color, and façade symmetry. The Kress chain was known for the first class architecture of its buildings. The chain’s owner, Samuel H. Kress, considered his stores to be works of public art that would create lasting contributions to America’s cities.

Throughout the first half of the 20th Century Kress stores were a familiar site on “Main Street” in hundreds of cities and towns. Many former Kress stores are recognized today as architectural landmarks and are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Having purchased the Kress building in 2018, the new owners are excited about the prospect of restoring this historic property and allowing it to contribute once more to the content and character of Knoxville’s Gay Street and Downtown.

Current plans call for the addition of an 8,000 square foot Event Space and Rooftop Bar, 8,000 Square Feet of Newly Renovated Office Space, Street Level Retail, Wild Wing Café’s 7,500 Square Foot New Downtown Location and a 5,000 Square Foot Basement Level Res-taurant / Bar.
