You hear the ads on the radio and see the billboards. Some mega

companies promise the world and say everything right with their

million dollar marketing campaigns. Unfortunately, as usual, it is

too good to be true. Other industries do it too—they pressure the

homeowner to sign today for an installation tomorrow. They tell

the customer it is great service, but the truth is they don’t want

the customer to be able to compare prices. We have seen it

countless times and can only urge consumers to always get a sec-

ond estimate. A next day installation may seem convenient, but it

is not worth an extra $5000 to $10,000! Tell your friends and rel-

atives to always get a second opinion if the repair is more than

five hundred dollars.

So what’s been happening with these prices?

The rules of supply and demand are really in favor of oil heat consumers currently. Supply is very

high when the demand is not growing quickly enough to keep up. There are several factors that

have caused this. First, U.S. oil production has doubled in the last six years. Couple that with an

increased market share in Asia, creating new competition which has forced Nigerian and Algerian

oil prices to drop in order to stay competitive, Saudia Arabia flooding the market with crude, Chi-

na’s slowing economy and you have a recipe for low prices. Also, with investments in alternative

fuels as well as increased energy efficiencies, the demand in places such as Europe and developing

countries has decreased.

All of these factors have led to a dramatic decrease in oil prices. This

year, the average homeowner is expected to spend $750 less on fuel costs

than last year, allowing them to spend their hard earned money on things

other than energy bills—the lowest winter bills in over a decade. With

lower household energy costs, it is a great time to use the saved money to

increase comfort and efficiency of your HVAC systems. We don’t have a

crystal ball regarding future prices, but some “experts” believe prices will

remain at lower levels for several years. We can only hope!

A revolution of sorts has been

occurring in the HVAC equip-

ment segment. Variable speed

is not exactly a new technolo-

gy, but it is becoming more

and more widespread these

days with many types of heat-

ing and cooling equipment

taking advantage of it. Duct-

less A/C units installed by

Oehlert Bros. use inverter

technology that ramps the

speed of the condenser fan up

and down to closely match the

demand. Sometimes the out-

door fan runs so slowly and

quietly that customers think

the unit is not working.

There are also variable speed

blowers in new air condition-

ing units that also match the

cooling demand. Why have

a motor running at full speed

when half speed will do the

job? Tankless water heaters

also ramp up the flame used

to heat the water depending

on how much hot water de-

mand there is at any given

time. Again, no reason to

use 190,000Btus of heat

when only 30,000Btus are

needed. This variable speed

technology allows the units to

perform with great efficiency to

save on energy costs. They also

provide more even comfort

within your
