Tackling Renault Locks › Part 1

The lock must be treated more as a 4 track lock because of the inverted wafers – which is why the VA6 4 lifter tool has 4 lifting arms - 2 lifters on the top track and 2 lifters on the bottom track.

To deal with the way the manufacturer has constructed this lock series, you will see that

the tool’s grid has different numbering on the right side as the left side of the grid. This is due to 1 track using values 1234 in the key code, and the other track using values 5678 in the key code - so depending whether it’s read on track A or track B will determine whether you enter the cut value as 1234 or as 5678.

The wafers picked and read with the top and bottom ‘A’ lifting arms will all read from the right hand side grid in values 567 and 8.

The wafers picked and read on the top and bottom ‘B’ lifting arms will all read from the left hand grid in values 123 and 4.

To simplify this, each lifting arm has a small arrow on it, to show you exactly which grid values you should read. This has made defeating this lock and accurately decoding it simple.

Picking Process:

Once we have inserted the tool into the lock fully, we must find the binding wafers and pick them. We only pick a solid binding wafer; if a wafer has any spring movement at all we must leave it alone.

So we apply a medium tension and feel each position on both the A and the B lifting arms, searching for the solid binding positions. Once found we must pick these until the lock opens.

The Genuine Lishi VA6 4 Lifter, 3 in 1 Tool Position 4 is first to bind and pick on the top track with the B lifter. Position 1 decodes on the B lifter so is read on the left side grid – it reads as cut number 3.

By Martin Pink

The VA2/VA6 Lock using the 1234Q5678H SeriesIn Edition 2 of Cars, Keys and Locks, how to site read the VA6/VA2 key using the 1234Q5678H series was covered in our ‘Ask the Expert’ guide. The complex arrangement of this lock has caught many out as it uses inverted wafers. Although the key has now been added to the Ninja range of machines (guide on page 7) some other machines might not be able to decode the key. To site read this key you must understand the use of the H & Q values to figure out what cut to enter. A full guide can be found in edition 2, on pages 16-17, which gives comprehensive insight into the lock series.

Picking and Decoding the VA2/VA6 LockThis lock was once feared by locksmiths as their only solution in tackling it was to remove the lock and strip it down – or to purchase codes – which were costly and often troublesome to get hold of. The Lishi 4 lifter 3 in 1 tool makes picking and decoding this lock, accurately, possible in just minutes.

Each lifting arm has a small arrow on it, to show you exactly which grid values you should read.

Decoding Process:

In a position that has a spring wafer, we must always decode in the same direction as we pick. Decode to the spring and not away from it, and gently push past the spring to the full stop position to read.

Position 1 decodes on the B lifter so is read on the left side grid – it reads as cut number 3.

Position 2 also decodes on the B lifter so is read on the left side grid – it reads as a cut number 2.

Position 1 is the next to bind and pick on the top track on the B lifter.

As we pick position 2 the lock opens. By not needing to pick positions 5 and 6, we know these will either be cuts 4 or 8

– as the decode will confirm.

Position 3 is the next to bind and pick on the bottom track with the A lifter.

Position 2 is the next to bind and pickon the top track with the B lifter.

Remember: if we decode with the A lifter we read the right hand side grid values numbered 5678. If we decode with the B lifter we read the left hand side values on the grid of 1234.

The decode for this lock is as follows:

Page 6: The Knowledgebase for Todays Locksmith Tackling …€¦ · The Knowledgebase for Todays Locksmith. ... in the world of key cutting and car key related technology. ... specialised

6

Position 3 reads on the A lifter so is read from the right hand side of grid – it reads as a cut number 6.

Position 6 reads on the B lifter so we must read the left side grid – it reads as a cut number 4.

Select decode and next.

Position 4 reads on the B lifter so reads from the left side grid – it reads as a cut number 2.

Position 5 reads on the A lifter so we must read from the right side grid – it reads as a cut number 8.

This gives us a decode, from bow to tip of: 326284. If we enter this into the cutting machine it will cut the correct key.

This key is featured in the site reading guide in edition 2 of Cars, Keys and Locks, and if you have read this you will know it is possible to enter this code in a number of different formats to achieve the exact same key.

For example:

3262846737843262HQ323214676785

And so on…

These would all cut the exact same key. But you don’t need to worry about this, the Lishi tool will give you an exact reading every time and the machine will always cut the correct key. In this case a key of 326284 is a perfect key for the lock as expected.

To fully understand this series, read the guide on understanding and site reading this lock in edition 2.

The Renault NE72 By Martin Pink

Picking and Decoding using the New NE72 Lishi 2in1 Pick/DecoderThe Renault NE72 Lock is used on the majority of the Renault range prior to key cards; for example Megane, Clio, Renault traffic vans, the Vauxhall Vivaro and Nissan Primastar relatives. It was also used by Peugeot amongst others.

Single Sided, Single Lifter 2in1 Lishi Tool:

It has always been a headache for auto locksmiths to strip this lock down as it is a time consuming and awkward job. This new tool is a welcome addition to the Genuine Lishi 2in1 family and has drastically simplified picking and decoding this lock. In fact I tested the sample on my own 2007 Vauxhall Vivaro van and found it to be amazingly easy to use and extremely accurate on the decode – the first time I used this on my own van it took just 1 minute.

I have found this tool to be the easiest of the range to use, with a 100% decode record on all 22 vehicles it was tested on. There are two NE72 Lishi 2in1 picks available; one clockwise version and one anti-clockwise version. The clockwise version is for models such as Vivaro, for the lock on the driver’s door, and the anti-clockwise version is for models such as Megane.

Introduction

The NE72 lock is a 6 pin, pin tumbler lock. The later versions use wafers and the tool picks both, equally as well. Both only pick

one way – upwards as a standard rim cylinder does. Some models are fitted with a clutch, these differ from year to year – later models being far lighter than earlier models – so sticking to a light tension is essential as with any clutched auto lock.

Picking Process:There are no set picking sequences with this lock, it is just a matter of finding the binding pin and picking it, the order of this process will change from lock to lock – as in any pin tumbler.

Insert the pick into the lock, check each position without tension to ensure there is a pin in each position.

Page 13: The Knowledgebase for Todays Locksmith Tackling …€¦ · The Knowledgebase for Todays Locksmith. ... in the world of key cutting and car key related technology. ... specialised

13

Decoding Process:

The decoding of this lock is both very quick and very accurate, and you decode in the same direction as you picked the lock. Positon 1 is the bow of the bow end and position 6 is the tip of the key.

The grid is numbered for the heights as cut 1 to 5, but the cuts on Instacode and cut to code machines are in letters M, N, P etc. so the tools grid relates to the following cuts:

1 on the grid = cut S2 on the grid = cut R3 on the grid = cut P4 on the grid = cut N5 on the grid = cut M

NOTE: This chart is important in the decode process so make a note of it and keep it safe for future reference.

Next you need to apply a light tension in the opening direction; generally this is clockwise on the driver’s door and anti-clockwise on the passenger door. Once you have applied a light tension, move the pick to position 1 and gently lift the pin 1mm, if it moves leave it alone and move to the next position, and so on until a binding, resisting pin is found.

Once a binding pin is found:

In this instance the 1st pin to bind is the number 6 position. Position yourself under the resisting pin and pick it 1mm – if it is still resisting pick it again. Once it’s moving and a tight slapping feeling is felt, leave it alone and feel each position again until the next binding pin is felt.

The process for picking is as simple as that - find each binding pin in turn and pick it. If it moves leave it alone!

Once the final binding pin is picked the lock will open - in order to then decode the lock, it needs to be held by the tensioner in the open position.

Page 14: The Knowledgebase for Todays Locksmith Tackling …€¦ · The Knowledgebase for Todays Locksmith. ... in the world of key cutting and car key related technology. ... specialised

14

Once the lock is picked, hold it via the tension handle in the open position and prepare to decode the lock starting with position 1 at the bow end of the key.

So by using the chart and taking the decode from the photos, the decode on this lock and the correct key, from bow to tip is:

P, N, R, P, R and P at the tip. So you are ready to cut and program the key, with practice this is easily achieved in less than 2 minutes, which saves huge amounts of time in comparison to the method of stripping the lock down and decoding it.

It stops on the line for the number 3 (P) cut.

Position 3 is a number 2 (R) cut.

Position 5 is a number 2 (R) cut.

It stops on the line for a number 4 (N) cut.

Position 4 is a number 3 (P) cut.

Position 6 is a number 3 (P) cut.

In Tackling Renault Locks – Part 2; which will feature in edition 4 of Cars, Keys and Locks, we will be explaining how to pick and decode the VAC102 ignition lock on a Renault Kangoo, using the Genuine Lishi VAC102 ignition 2in1 pick/ decoder.

We will also be giving you step by step instructions to tackle both Renault phase 2 and Renault phase 3 locks.

So make sure you get your FREE copy of CKL this August!

You must have the T4 splitter cable connected to the car and Truecode for the PSA software to work. This error will always happen if the T4 cable isn’t connected to both.

I’m trying to program a key to a 2003 Ford KA, but Truecode keeps coming up with an error message. The lead is firmly plugged in, the ignition is on and the battery is full – am I doing something wrong?

I’m trying to program a spare key to a 2013 Citroen Berlingo, but I’m getting an error message every time. The security dongle is plugged in but I am still getting an error message – is my unit faulty?

Are you a locksmith unable to get a job done? Got a burning question, but not sure who to ask for advice on the latest products and tools? World leading auto locksmith professional Martin Pink is here to help! Each issue he will be answering some of your auto locksmithing questions, so if you’re in need of expert advice, get in touch!

This could be 1 of 2 things – in normal circumstances:

Number 1 – check whether you have plugged in the USB stick/dongle that comes with

your Truecode. This must be plugged in so that the correct incode can be calculated, without it you will get an error message.

Number 2 – if the dongle is plugged in, then the other common mistake people make is to use the wrong chip. All KA models up until 2008 use a 4C chip – so you must ensure you are using a 4C chip and not a 4D chip.

I have a set of NEC clocks from a 2011 VW Polo, but it’s different to the photos I have been supplied with by SuperVAG. I can’t find the correct pad to apply the pogo stick to so I can enter service mode – can you help?

I am having trouble when trying to determine which version of the VA2 lock is fitted to the vehicle I’m working on. Is there a way, with the tool to determine if the lock is the 6 height ABCDEF series lock or if it’s the 1234Q5678H series lock that’s fitted - as I sometimes waste blades selecting the wrong series?

Both locks have the same spacing, so it’s not possible to tell the difference with the tool itself as both will feel the same. However, a visual identification often proves to be a very reliable way of identifying which series is fitted – although it is not 100%.

Visually inspect the keyway, if the lock has a vertical keyway it will most likely be the 6 height ABCDEF series lock. If the lock has a horizontal keyway it will most likely be the newer 1234Q5678H series 4 height lock that has been fitted.

This is not unusual as VAG use a large number of clocks and PCB so they just list the most common ones they have access to. Some that are seen less often are not listed but you can work around this normally by following this procedure:

Ensure you turn the cluster around so that the writing on the processor chip is the right way up as you look at it, then count the legs from the top right hand side of the processor chip. From the top right hand corner you will need to count down 6 legs. Follow the track from the 6th leg to the pad and use the pogo stick on this pad. If there is more than 1 pad, try each in turn. This process will normally find the correct pad every time so you can enter service mode.

Although in the example the pad itself isn’t in line with leg 6, it is in line with the track coming from leg 6.Therefore my suggestion is, when it is hard to tell, just try each pad in this area, one will put it into service mode. You won’t damage clocks by selecting the wrong pad it just won’t enter service mode.

Tango Take 2: Keymakers

In the last edition we showed you how to install, set up and do basic functions using Tango. Following on, in this edition we will go into the key maker function of Tango and specifically focus on the FIAT 500. This vehicle cannot currently be programmed by OBD when no keys are available (in an all keys lost scenario).

Fiat 500 (from 2008 until 2012) – Tango Key Maker

So what is a Key Maker function?

This is the terminology used by TANGO which describes the function of creating a new transponder key by manipulating data which has been extracted from a vehicles ECU. This data is found from either reading the EEPROM or the Microcontroller. Therefore if you have a TANGO machine you can make new transponder keys to a huge variety of vehicles where sometimes an OBD solution is not possible. In order to extract data from EEPROMs and MCUs you will also need an additional piece of equipment to do the actual data extraction, such as Orange5, Codex etc. TIP: Make sure you practice your soldering BEFORE you go onto a customer’s car –

don’t say I didn’t warn you!

STEP 1)

In this case we have removed the BSI from the vehicle and used TANGO ‘Maker help’ under the help heading to show us which component we need to read on the PCB, its location and which transponder we will then use.

In summary we need to remove and extract the data from the EEPROM 93C86 (using Orange5 etc), we then have the choice to program a new ID46 key using TANGO; either using a PCF7936 (standard key) or a PCF7946 (which is a remote key).

by Richard Bunn

Page 19: The Knowledgebase for Todays Locksmith Tackling …€¦ · The Knowledgebase for Todays Locksmith. ... in the world of key cutting and car key related technology. ... specialised

19

STEP 2)

So you have successfully extracted the data from the EEPROM and you have saved this file (commonly known as a bin file) to your desktop.

You then need to select which continent your vehicle is from (ASIA, EUROPE or USA).

STEP 3)

Once you have selected Europe you then move across to the ‘car model’. After selecting the car model option a drop down box of all the vehicles currently covered under the ‘Europe’ heading will appear. Select ‘Fiat’, then another drop down will automatically appear and choose ‘500’. TANGO will then show you one option from where the data can be manipulated, in this case the EEPROM 93C86.

In this case the FIAT 500 is an Italian manufacturer therefore we select the Europe option.

In summary we need to remove and extract the data from the EEPROM 93C86 (using Orange5 etc), we then have the choice to program a new ID46 key using TANGO; either using a PCF7936 (standard key) or a PCF7946 (which is a remote key).

Page 20: The Knowledgebase for Todays Locksmith Tackling …€¦ · The Knowledgebase for Todays Locksmith. ... in the world of key cutting and car key related technology. ... specialised

20

STEP 4)

Once you select the 93C86 option the following screen will appear. The next step on this screen is the ‘F icon’ (which is circled below). This is a button which allows you (once pressed) to select and open the bin file that you have created previously from reading the Fiats EEPROM. TANGO will then instantly analyse the file once you have selected it (providing that the file is the correct size and has not been corrupted).

STEP 6)

TANGO will now open up a dialogue box which you can save with a ‘meaningful’ file name. This NEW bin file now contains the new transponders IDE and also TANGO has written that vehicles specific 6 byte secret key to the NEW transponder.

STEP 5)

TANGO will now show you, in this case, that there are two keys already programmed to the vehicle (although lost) and you can either overwrite the existing keys (Key 1 or Key 2 options) OR choose the Key 3 option which will just add a key to the system.

In this case we now have placed a PCF7936 (ID46) transponder into the TANGO device, selected Key 3 as our option, and then pressed the ‘W icon’ which starts the writing of the transponder process into the bin file.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The ‘Key 1’ slot has a remote key already programmed which uses a PCF7946 transponder, and the ‘Key 2’ slot has a standard PCF7936 transponder already programmed.

Page 21: The Knowledgebase for Todays Locksmith Tackling …€¦ · The Knowledgebase for Todays Locksmith. ... in the world of key cutting and car key related technology. ... specialised

21

STEP 7)

TANGO will now prompt you to write the new file back to the EEPROM (using Orange5 or Codex etc). Once the BSI is then fitted back onto the FIAT 500 the car will start with the NEW transponder key. In this case we labelled our file ‘New transponder key added 2010 Fiat 500’ – although its ’wordy’ it is descriptive; plus I would also add the registration of the vehicle to that filename in case of any future contact with the customer.

STEP 8)

Please note that after 2012 on a FIAT 500 the EEPROM was removed and the microcontroller was upgraded to a NEC MCU 70F3632. So, the transponder data is now stored inside the EEPROM section of the microcontroller. At present TANGO has not released a solution for these later vehicles.

TIP: If you have time, and if your customer can wait, you can remove the BSI to look for the EEPROM on the PCB. It has been reported that some Fiat 500s as late as 2014 had the older PCB with the eeprom located as previously shown.

Lock ID

The Securefast lock has come in many colours and with many names over the years, and that is why identifying the lock via the keyhole, by colour, isn’t possible. Despite this, identifying the locks is easy. Firstly, ID the lock type when looking through the keyway – you can ID it as a Securefast lock by the hard plate shape and type.

You will notice on both lock generations that the hard plate doesn’t go all the way to the bottom of the keyway; also the keyway cut out in the hard plate is offset to the right, so it looks ill fitting – only the Securefast locks look like this.

Now we have identified the keyway by its hard plate shape, we need to determine if it is a generation 1 or 2, as both decode differently. Using a small flat screwdriver turn the curtain in the opening direction; if the curtain turns a full 360 degrees then it’s a generation 1 lock, if the curtain only turns to the 11 o clock position and then stops it’s a generation 2 lock.

Picking and Decoding the Newer 2nd Generation Securefast Lock

Once identified as a generation 2 lock, we can begin to decode it.

The lock, as we can see, is left side shooting - with a bolt shooting to the left hand side. We must select the left hand side reader keys; the reader keys are numbered 1 to 5 with number 1 being the wafer nearest the case (so nearest to you) and number 5 is nearest the bolt.

As this is the newer lock we must decode it in the locking direction. Do this by inserting the keys into the lock one at a time and turning anti-clockwise in the locking direction until the key stops - we must select the new locks reading chart.

Page 24: The Knowledgebase for Todays Locksmith Tackling …€¦ · The Knowledgebase for Todays Locksmith. ... in the world of key cutting and car key related technology. ... specialised

24

In position 1 the bow is upright so it reads as a number 1 key cut.

As the chart says, a position that moves back on the spring itself is a number

5 key cut – so position 3 is a 5 key cut.

Position 4 reads at 3 o clock, so it is a number 4 key cut.

At position 4 the bow is at 3 o clock so it is a number 4 key cut.

Page 25: The Knowledgebase for Todays Locksmith Tackling …€¦ · The Knowledgebase for Todays Locksmith. ... in the world of key cutting and car key related technology. ... specialised

25

Position 5 stops at the 2 o clock position so it reads as a number 2 key cut. We now have the 5 cuts inposition 1 from the cap, to position 5 at the bolt, which gives a key of 14542.

Now we know what the key cuts are we must build up the makeup key to open the lock. To do this we must select our reader key and pin set; pin 1 for key cut 1 is the highest pin and we don’t need a pin for key cut 5 as this is the height that the reader key is pre-set to.

You must apply grease to the reader key to help ensure none of the pins fall out.

Then build the decoded key from bow to tip – 14542.

Page 26: The Knowledgebase for Todays Locksmith Tackling …€¦ · The Knowledgebase for Todays Locksmith. ... in the world of key cutting and car key related technology. ... specialised

26

We then insert the reader key and gently turn it in the opening direction – turning hard will bend pins so just turn gently to open the lock.

If you wanted to cut a new key from the tool, you would do so by building its mirror image on the other side of the makeup key. So the full key would read from bow to tip – 145424541. A new key could be cut from the full makeup key, or you could swap levers around and build a new makeup key, and cut a key to rekey the lock.

Decoding and Opening the Older 1st Generation Securefast Lock

We know this is a 1st generation lock as the curtain turns a full 360 degrees – so we use the same reader keys but this time we select the old Securefast reading chart to read our cuts. In this lock we take our readings in a clockwise unlocking direction; it is also a left shoot lock – so the left reader keys are chosen.

Having selected the left reader key we insert it into the lock and turn in the clockwise unlocking direction.

The chart tells you that a number 1 cut will turn a full 360 degrees – both position 1 and position 2 turn 360 degrees, therefore both position 1 and 2 are number 1 cuts.

Lock

27

Position 3 stops at 2 o clock so it is a position 2.

Position 4 stops at 10 o clock so it is a number 3 cut.

Position number 5 stops at 9 o clock, so it is a number 4 key cut.

Our decode reading is now taken, giving us a key from bow to tip of 11234.

We take our makeup key and pin set. We then grease up our makeup key holes to prevent the pins from falling out and build our key from the bow end – 11234.

Page 28: The Knowledgebase for Todays Locksmith Tackling …€¦ · The Knowledgebase for Todays Locksmith. ... in the world of key cutting and car key related technology. ... specialised

28

Insert a number 1 pin into the end hole, at the tip end, to throw the bolt in the old lock as well. Or, build the entire key as the key throws the bolt in the old lock and not the curtain – as with the generation 2 lock.We now insert the key and gently turn to open - as hard turning can damage the pins.

The lock is now open; we can make up the entire key from bow to tip: 11234321, and cut a new key and we can move around the levers to rekey the lock and cut the new key. But remember, if you are rekeying the old lock it is the key that throws the bolt, so the key must always have at least 1 x number 1 cut in positions 1, 2, 8 and 9 in order to throw the bolt.

This is a very simple lock to read and decode but care must be taken not to turn too hard when opening it, as this will just bend the pins – gentle use will give prolonged pin life. And always use grease when building the makeup key.

The Smart Cloner 90 Wi-Fi (884 Mini): The Perfect Union of Simplicity and Innovation

Michele Miscio is a locksmith from Milan who runs a shop in Via Gluck, a street which was made famous by the sixties song, ‘The Boys of Via Gluck’ by Adriano Celentano. The House of Keys is Michele’s key cutting shop - which is fully dedicated to vehicles. Car and motorbike riders alike can pull up right outside to have a key duplicated in a matter of minutes, something Michele is truly a specialist in...

By Massimo Bianchi – Keyline Strategic Planner

He says, “I decided to specialise in vehicle keys here in Milan because no one else has had this idea! After becoming a locksmith I decided to focus soley on vehicle keys because of their profitability and quick returns. It wasn’t easy – I had to build my experience and sharpen my abilities through transponder cloning and programming. But, my hard work has prevailed as these days I’m recieving at least 5 calls a day from people who have tried every other key cutter in town and had no success; and often I have a line of customers reaching the door of my shop!

“I store each and every car and motorcycle key, from the old Fiat 500 of 1959 and the Harley Davidson Fat Bob of 1979, to the key of the latest vehicle on the market. However, my professional life changed dramatically last November when Keyline launched their solution to the Megamos transponder – which is embedded in most of the Fiat and VW

-Audi car keys of the last 15 years – at least. I was already a happy owner of a cloner 884 Mini and so I simply upgraded my tool with the TKM.Xtreme software which gave me immediate access to the new world of ID48 cloning solutions, in just one update. I can now go to the street and access a vehicle to program a key or a remote control, whilst my partner in the shop clones, with no effort, THREE Megamos keys with the Keyline TKM.Xtreme! This has virtually tripled my income for transponder keys when compared to the same quarter of last year. This was also made possible by the massive amount of advertising and promoting I have done through my shop since the TKM.xtreme was released.”

Almost one year has passed since the 884 Mini has been launched and it has proven itself to be one of the most revolutionary transponder key cloning tools of the last ten years. Not only for the non-stop technological developments that characterise it, but also for its great versatility in use and configuration. For instance, it is possible to clone a key directly from the vehicle using a smartphone or tablet, simply and in just minutes. Every specialist can clone about 95% of car, motorcycle and truck keys, that circulate today on the streets and all over the world. With a success rate of almost 100% and the possibility to choose the type of transponder solution you want to clone the key – either an electronic head or a glass chip. With the recent introduction of GK100 and GKM glass chips, every specialist can clone Philips® Crypto (ID46), Texas® Crypto (4D) and Texas® fixed code (4C) transponders and keys with the Megamos® Crypto (ID48) and Megamos® fixed code transponders.

Michele is a good example of how the innovative technology developed by a company like Keyline can be put at profitable work by a specialist key cutter, who is clearly very fond of his job!
