My Brothers in Christ,

This issue will find us coming out of the Lenten Season,

refreshed in Faith and ready to meet the coming days as we

travel with a Resurrected Christ! Jesus Is Risen! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

A couple of things as we move into May in addition to our

usual events & meetings. As always, consult the council’s

calendars. Some of this might be history by the time you read it.

First, I will be out of town from May 2 to May 9 attending

my son’s graduation from USAF Basic Training at Lockland

AFB in San Antonio, Texas. Talking with a couple of you

brothers, you have been there, done that and got the tee shirt.

We are very proud of him! Jim Kelly will be acting Grand

Knight for the period.

The Silver Rose is making its annual pilgrimage and I am

proud to announce that Council 11991 will again be hosting

the Silver Rose for District 13 again this year. It arrives on

May 10 and on May 14, the District Deputy Pat Davis and I

will transport it to Georgia. I have asked Mike Arcady and

Frank Bautista to coordinate with Father Jason on a program

I would like to see delivered on Saturday May 13. More on that later when we have the details drawn up.

Also on May 14, Mother’s Day, The Café will be hosting a

parish breakfast in the community center. I believe the

proceeds will go to pay off the church organ. Please support

them.

On May 18 the council will put on a Mother’s Day Dance

along with our annual Council Appreciation Social. The

Home Boys are cooking that night so the food will be

wonderful! I will have some announcements and awards to

deliver but will keep it short. We will have a special guest

that night to share a real mother’s day story with us. Along

with the good food, programs and I’m sure dancing, it will be

quite an evening. This is a ticketed event so be looking for

ticket sales to secure your spot.

Another event which you may want to consider is the State

Council Convention being held May 19-21. There is a golf

outing on Friday May 19 at the Air Force Base followed by

hospitality at the Embassy Suites. Since the convention is

close, travel will not be a cost or an issue. Think about going

and seeing how your State Council runs things. You can find everything about it at the State Council’ web site.

As always, thank you my Brothers in Christ for all that you

do-

Jesus – I Trust in You!

May God Bless you and your families and as always-

Brother Knights,

As you read these notes we will have completed another

successful “Tootsie Roll” drive thanks to all of you who

turned out to the Walmart to pass out tootsie rolls and collect

donations for Operation Hope. A big thanks also to Larry and

Ann, (Tootsie) Rocco for another great job in putting this

altogether! And most recent was the Taste of Goose Creek

where so many Knights worked in so many different roles

and tasks to help make this year’s event another grand time

and success. Yours truly was at times singing, “smoke gets in

your eyes” while flipping burgers and franks, unsuccessfully

dodging the smoke.

And now it is May, the time that I have heard is the second

most welcome month, June being the first, by all Grand

Knights. The halls are lined with the past records of all these

Deputy Grand Knight: Jerry Caolie

I have been a Knight since October 1985. I

received my First Degree through Council 6726,

Hanahan-Goose Creek, Second and Third

Degrees at Council 7469, St. Joan of Arc in

Yorktown, Virginia. I was exemplified into the

Fourth Degree in February 2008 and an active

member with Msgr. Richard C. Madden

Assembly 1900, Summerville. I have previously

held positions as Inside Guard, Recorder and

Warden (interim), and the Purser with Assembly

1900, soon to be installed as Captain.

Lynn and I have been married for 35 years and

are parishioners at Immaculate Conception since

1981. We have three adult children; Patrick,

Sarah and Miriam and six grandchildren all

residing in the Goose Creek area. I have remained

actively involved in the parish as Eucharistic

Minister, and Minister of Hospitality, and I

anticipate great success for the Council this year

and I strongly encourage ALL of our Knights to

get involved! Many hands make for light work

and we have much work to accomplish this

fraternal year particularly by improving

membership, not necessarily by numbers but by

member dedication. I ask that all of us share our

time and talents to actively support the various

Council, parish and family activities. As the

motto of Grand Knight Russ Whited states, let's

all make Council 11991 a FULL HOUSE!

If you are a Knight, be a Knight!

Vivat Jesus

men, Grand Knights of our Council 11991, who work so hard

at their tasks of guiding this Council. So much work is put

into the operations and actions that make Council 11991 one

of the best. And it is June of course that sees the installation

of a new Grand Knight and slate of Officers, with the current

Grand Knight becoming a “Past” Grand Knight. Rumor has

been spreading that the Knight slated to be nominated to take

on the role of Grand Knight for the newly arriving Council

year faces having to relocate back to New Jersey, according

to PGK’s Mike Cousino and Steve Gearhart! Oh wait,

tomorrow is May 1st not April 1st.

Turning back to a more serious mode, the many acts of

Charity, hard work on behalf of our Church, and all that we

do is because of all of you. There are many Knights who for

various reasons cannot attend many of our Business

Meetings, yet do work behind the scenes and show up to help

at so many of our fund raising and community functions. And

it is to all of you that I commend you for a job well done.

Thank you all for all that you do.

District Deputy Report

Brothers,

Very soon I will begin my 4th year as the District Deputy for

District #13. That means it is time to begin the search for my

replacement. The requirements are easy-be a 3rd Degree Knight

in good standing, although having the experience as a Grand

Knight is a huge asset. If you think this is something you might

like to try please give me a call (843-830-5939).

The State Convention is coming to town May 19-21 at the

Embassy Suites Hotel in North Charleston. This is a golden

opportunity to see how business is done at the State level of our

order. Friday there is a golf tournament being held at the

Charleston AFB, the cost is $45 (includes Lunch). Registration

for the convention will begin at 3PM-the rest of the day is a

“meet and greet” friends and new friends. Saturday is the State

Convention and it begins at 9 AM, to attend you must be in a

Coat and Tie and have your “Traveling Card” signed and

current. There is a fee for Delegates (voting members

representing their council). This will last up to about 4PM with

Mass to follow. A formal dinner will cap the day off. Sunday

(the last day) will have the Mike Telesco Awards (it is normally

tied in with breakfast-sorry not this year). This is when all of the

state awards are handed out and the monies from the State

Charity Raffle are dispersed out to the many worthy

organizations.

And it’s time to think about May 29th- Memorial Day. I say this

mainly because if I don’t I may miss it. Time is moving much

faster as I get older, I’m not but it sure is. Have a great May

Brothers!

Special Message from Pope Francis…..

Worthy District Deputies,

Just when we thought it couldn't get any

better to be a Catholic in this century, Pope

Francis gives a TED talk at this year’s

Conference titled "The future you"

The Pope says in his message......

"How wonderful would it be if the growth of

scientific and technological innovation would

come along with more equality and social

inclusion? How wonderful would it be, while we

discover faraway planets, to rediscover the

needs of the brothers and sisters orbiting

around us? How wonderful would it be if

solidarity, this beautiful and, at times,

Assembly 3697

FAITHFUL NAVIGATOR’S REMARKS:

Brother Sir Knights:

It is truly amazing how fast time is passing. It was no more than

just a few weeks ago it seems, that we began to form the St

Francis Caracciolo Assembly. I remember the original 69 that

came forward that evening in January and expressed their

desires to support a new Assembly at Immaculate Conception.

The attendance at our monthly meetings shows me that we need

to start looking for programs to get involved in. We are now in

the month of May already and the installation of the Charter

Officers of this Assembly is near. The supporting foundation of

the Assembly is now sound. All of the Officers have been voted

on, we have approved By-Laws, the ceremonial items required

to conduct a meeting have been purchased and received with the

exception of the banner. I want to express a heartfelt thank you

now for the additional monies for the startup costs. We used

every bit of the $1800 budgeted to purchase the items. Again

thank you because without your generosity we would not have

been able to do it all this quickly.

I want to thank the Sir Knights that have stepped up to join the

Honor Guard. Sir Knights Jim Martin, Frank Strunk, Alex

Antol, Frank Bautista, Danny Cariaga, Robert Waite, and John

Flinn. It didn’t take long to get involved as our services were

needed almost immediately. A personal thank you goes to our

assistant Commander Sir Knight Jerry Tenney for directing the

Honor Guard at the Holy Thursday Mass. We had 8 Sir Knights

that served that evening that displayed the ability to adapt

quickly to change. Another thank you to our Commander, Sir

Knight Michael Cousino for directing the Honor Guard at the

Confirmation Mass at Immaculate Conception. That evening we

had 9 Sir Knights that stood tall and again adapt to change. We

do have more events to support this month and I know there are

more of you with regalia. Please come and join your Brother

Knights and be recognized. I forecast that our Honor Guard and

Color Guard will be very busy in the near future.

On June 12th we will hold the installation of officers in the

church at 5:30pm. History will be made again at Immaculate

Conception as the Charter Officers of the new St Francis

Caracciolo Assembly 3697 will be installed by the District

Master Thomas Monahan. I have sent numerous emails

notifying you of the Installation Dinner. I have asked that you

RSVP (reply) if you are attending. It may seem expensive but

trying to recruit personnel to setup, cook and cleanup is

impossible so we pay for the service. Please, this for you and

your wife.

Sir Knights, if you inspire any of our Third-Degree Knights who

are interested in becoming a Fourth-Degree member of the

Knights of Columbus thus completing their journey to full

Knighthood contact Sir Knight Remigio Silva, Assembly

Membership Director. The next 4th Degree Exemplification will

Page 5: The Knightly Newsuknight.org/Councils/Communicator_May 2017 Final.pdfGordon & Virginia Stevenson 7/4, , Chad & Joy Huber 7/4, John & Wilma Sheil 7/6, Gregory & Rebecca Cissell 7/7,

Page - 5

inconvenient word, were not simply reduced to

social work, and became, instead, the default

attitude in political, economic and scientific

choices, as well as in the relationships among

individuals, peoples and countries. Only by

educating people to a true solidarity will we be

able to overcome the "culture of waste," which

doesn't concern only food and goods but, first

and foremost, the people who are cast aside by

our techno-economic systems which, without

even realizing it, are now putting products at

their core, instead of people".

"The third message I would like to share

today is, indeed, about revolution: the revolution

of tenderness. And what is tenderness? It is the

love that comes close and becomes real. It is a

movement that starts from our heart and

reaches the eyes, the ears and the

hands. Tenderness means to use our eyes to see

the other, our ears to hear the other, to listen to

the children, the poor, those who are afraid of

the future. To listen also to the silent cry of our

common home, of our sick and polluted

earth. Tenderness means to use our hands and

our heart to comfort the other, to take care of

those in need".

In this context we (the Knights of Columbus)

can replace the word solidarity with Fraternity.

Then we can ask ourselves do I encounter my

brothers and sisters who obit around me each

day with the love and compassion that Jesus

asks?

Can we say that our face represents Christ to

the people I encounter each day? Have I started

a revolution of tenderness? I think, if you're like

me, the answer may be that I fall very short at

times, but I don't fall nearly as short as I would

if I were not a Knight of Columbus. Think about

what you can do to be that face of Christ in our

secular society and how "each and every one of

the "yous" can become the WE that starts the

revolution today".

“Sir Knight”

Is More than a Title, It’s an Honor

The Patriotic Degree of the Knights of Columbus is

committed to the preservation of our Church, our Order and

to the many nations where Knights serve. We serve as

examples of Christ’s presence in the world.

At some point in our lives, there comes a time when we

realize that our Christian duty extends beyond our own lives,

beyond how we lead our families and into how we serve our

fellow man.

That is what defines the Knights of Columbus and by

joining the St Francis Caracciolo Assembly 3697 of the

Patriotic Degree, you have the opportunity to take that duty

Assembly 3697 Upcoming Events:

Sunday, May 28: Assembly 3967 will conduct a "Patriotic

Rosary" after the 1130 am Mass at ICC. If you have never

witnessed a "Patriotic Rosary" mark your calendars today.

Those Sir Knights participating in reciting a decade, I request

you wear your tuxedo with the social baldric. You are

encouraged to bring family as well, particularly your children

and their friends. If we have sufficient attendance, we can

have others involved in the presentation of a Hail Mary.

What’s in a Name? Please note that our newsletter is still

titled just that – “The Newsletter”. Three names have risen

to the top based on the ballot held at the April business

meeting. I would like to present these three names for a final

vote at the May 2017 meeting:

The Caracciolo Chronicle

The Caracciolo Notaziario (Italian for “newsletter”)

The Knight Courier

Protocol of the Fourth Degree:

The Fourth-Degree Color Corps is already receiving many

important service requests:

Saturday, May20th: The Color Corps has also been asked to

present the Colors at the next State Convention in North

Charleston. After the Easter season, we will schedule training

and assign specific Sir Knights to the Color Corps and Honor

Guard for this function. I will ask Sir Knight and Regional

Marshal Lucien “Don” Boissonneault to attend our rehearsals so

we will offer a most professional and patriotic presentation. We

will need to be certified by him prior to the State Convention.

Monday, May 29th – Memorial Day: The Color Corps with

Honor Guard will present and post the flag at the Summerville

Memorial Day Ceremony held at the Summerville Cemetery.

Assembly time is about 9:30 (subject to change). Reply to the

Faithful Navigator if you have full regalia and are available.

If you are seriously interested in the Color Corps, indicate your

intentions to SK Michael Cousino or FN Steve Gearhart.

Those members desiring to join the Assembly Honor Guard or

Color Guard, the following approved Companies have Regalia

Packages or individual items such as capes, chapeaux, swords,

gloves, etc. available:

The English Company at www.kofcsupplies.com.

Lynch and Kelly at www.lynchkelly.com.

Veteran’s Victory Home, Walterboro: To honor our

continuing patriotic commitment, we ask that all continue to

bring toiletry articles to any of our meetings and socials

throughout the year. These items will be collected and shared

between the Walterboro Veteran’s Victory Home and the

Felician Sisters in Kingstree. The Veteran’s Victory Home also

asks for craft items, books (prefer large print), periodicals and

newspapers. Some of these items are used in their therapy

sessions. The adult coloring books with colored pencils are

exceptionally popular.

Our Lady of Joyful Hope: We met recently with Sister

Suzanne and another Felician Sister in Kingstree and got a brief

tour of their facility. They also have a clothing pantry. They

continue to help those in desperate need with the basics of food,

clothing and shelter, and humbly ask for help in replenishing

their pantry with food, toiletry and hygiene items. Sister

Suzanne did say that hygiene items are in regular short supply.

We will continue to collect toiletry and hygiene items to help

with restocking. Cash donations are also always welcome.

Therefore, at each meeting, social or gathering we will have a

box available in which to put any donated items. These we will

then deliver to the Felician Sisters at the St. Anne Felician

Center who remain humbly thankful for our donations.

Respect Life

As of May 1, over 6,172 babies have been saved!

The Women’s March… Not So Pro-Women

By now you’ve probably heard about the “Women’s March”

that took place the day after Donald Trump was sworn in as

president. The stated goal of this march was to send a

message to the new administration that “Women’s rights are

human rights.” This doesn’t sound so bad, does it? Well,

let’s look at the fine print.

According to the Women’s March website, part of their

mission is to “stand together, recognizing that defending the

most marginalized among us is defending all of us.” They go

on to explain further in one of their Unity Principles: “We do

not accept any federal, state or local rollbacks, cuts or

restrictions on our ability to access quality reproductive

healthcare services.”

To this end, both Planned Parenthood and NARAL are

partnering with the Women’s March to push their pro-

abortion agenda. In other words, the Women’s March was

nothing more than a pro-abortion rally disguised as a pro-

women’s march. But if we’ve learned anything since Roe v.

Wade, it’s that abortion is not pro-women. Consider the

following:

An estimated 65% of women seeking an abortion feel

coerced by their partner, husband or family. Is that

really reproductive choice?

40% to 60% of women who’ve undergone an

abortion later report suffering from some

combination of depression, drug abuse, grief, and

guilt. Where is the empowerment in that?

More than half a million baby girls are aborted each

year in America. Do they not deserve a voice?

The mainstream media was all over the Women’s March,

praising its advocacy and pushing its agenda. But when you

get right down to it, the Women’s March does not represent

the vast majority of America. (80% of women believe late-

term abortion should be banned.) Nor does the March know

what hurting women really want or need.

We will not waver! We have a vivid hope that abortion will

become unthinkable and unavailable in our lifetime. Unite

with us in our mission to end the worst holocaust in human

history, to protect image-bearers of God himself, to bring

help to abandoned and rejected women, and to rescue every

pre-born baby we can!

With unwavering hope, For LIFE! We continue to affirm

that abortion will not be ended in the Courts – it will be

ended in our Culture!”

PRAYER OF THE MONTH:

The Secret of Mary – Where Heaven and Earth Meet (St.

Louis de Montfort)

The Catholic practice of assigning a special devotion to each

month goes back to the early 16th century. Since the best

known of those devotions is probably the dedication of May as

the month of the Blessed Virgin Mary. We can take the month

of May as an opportunity to renew our own devotion to the

Mother of God by dusting off our rosaries and adding a few

more Marian prayers to our daily routine. Parents, in particular,

should encourage Marian devotion in their children, since the

non-Catholic Christians they encounter today often downplay (if

not denigrate) the role that the Blessed Virgin played in our

salvation through her fiat—her joyous "Yes" to the will of God.

In this prayer, Saint Augustine of Hippo (354-430) illustrates

both Christian reverence for the Mother of God and the proper

understanding of intercessory prayer. We pray to the Blessed

Virgin so that she might present our prayers and intercessions to

God at the feet of her Divine Son, and obtain forgiveness from

Him for our sins.

“O blessed Virgin Mary, who can worthily repay thee thy just

dues of praise and thanksgiving, thou who by the wondrous

assent of thy will didst rescue a fallen world? What songs of

praise can our weak human nature recite in thy honor, since it

is by thy intervention alone that it has found the way to

restoration. Accept, then, such poor thanks as we have here to

offer, though they be unequal to thy merits; and receiving our

vows, obtain by thy prayers the remission of our offenses.

Carry thou our prayers within the sanctuary of the heavenly

audience, and bring forth from it the antidote of our

reconciliation. May the sins we bring before Almighty God

through thee, become pardonable through thee; may what we

ask for with sure confidence, through thee be granted. Take

our offering, grant us our requests, and obtain pardon for

what we fear, for thou art the sole hope of sinners. Through

thee we hope for the remission of our sins, and in thee, O

blessed Lady, is our hope of reward. Holy Mary, succor the

miserable, help the fainthearted, comfort the sorrowful, pray

for thy people, plead for the clergy, intercede for all women

consecrated to God; may all who keep thy holy

commemoration feel now thy help and protection. Be thou ever

ready to assist us when we pray, and bring back to us the

answers to our prayers. Make it thy continual care to pray for

the people of God, thou who, blessed by God, didst merit to

bear the Redeemer of the world, who liveth and reigneth, world

without end. Amen”.

PRAYER FOR OUR CITIZENS: Continue to pray for our

citizens, particularly those in this, our United States, who have

lost their lives, been misplaced or been injured in dangerous

weather or in the continuing senseless violence in our country,

South Carolina Citizens for Life – The first civil right is the

RIGHT TO LIFE!

Congratulations to Justice Neil Gorsuch, confirmed to the

United States Supreme Court. For pro-lifers who know the

devastation wrecked by the extra-constitutional Roe v. Wade

decision, a vow to be “a faithful servant of the Constitution

and the laws of this great nation” is music to our ears.

South Carolina Citizens for Life, Inc. has helped to save over

149,131 babies and decreased abortions more than 59.6%

since 1988. Every day, over 3000 abortions are performed in

this country. Every year more than 1.2 million heartbeats of

an unborn baby are stopped, and more than 1.2 million lives

cut short. Abortion is not rare or safe - only legal! Abortion

has taken the lives of more than 55 million babies and left the

mothers physically damaged and vulnerable due to emotional

injury. Join us to help make a difference. You are

encouraged to visit the National Right to Life website at

www.nrlc.org for additional information.

leadership will make decisions supporting religious freedom

with positive effects on our entire Country.

PRAYER FOR OUR RELIGIOUS: We ask for your

continued prayers for SK Jerry Caoile as he continues his studies

for the Diaconate program, and for those other young men and

women progressing in their religious discernment and studies.

PRAYER FOR OUR TROOPS: Continue to keep our

military servicemen and women - those who are now where

many of us once were - in your thoughts and prayers, as well as

those in public safety.

“Protect them from the physical and moral dangers of military

life. Keep them close to You and help them live the

Commandments. Lord, Jesus, give them courage to serve their

Country with honor and dignity. Be with them when they are

in danger strengthening them when they face hardships. And

Lord, grant that, when their service is finished, they may

return to us sound in mind, body and soul. In particular, we

remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to

their fellow man and Country. Amen.”

“It is a great time to be a Catholic and always a great time to

be an active Knight.” We ask all Sir Knights to keep actively

recruiting our patriotic Knights.

Vivat Jesus!

Warden

Daryl J. Lareau

To assist in facilitating our monthly meetings, here are a

couple of reminders:

1. All Knights must possess a current and signed

membership card. You will be asked to produce your

membership card by the Warden, the Inside Guard, or

the Outside Guard.

2. During the business meetings and O&D meetings, please

be respectful when a brother knight has the floor. It can

become distracting and confusing when there are other

conversations on different subjects in different areas of

the room.

If you have any questions about these two items, you can talk

with me at church, the business meeting, or the O&D

meeting.

Your Brother Knight,

Daryl J. Lareau, Warden
