I thought the quote of Saint John Paul II appropriate for this month. November is the month dedicated by the Church for the souls in Purgatory. We can find courage in knowing that even though we stumble, the mercy of God allows us (as shared by Rev. Suriani, Brother Knight), to be purified in the “Church Suffering”, aided by the prayers of the living, in the “Church Militant”, so that we may enter the “Church Triumphant”. Also, in the midst of a horrific war that had no end in sight, President Lincoln courageously asked the nation to “… observe the last Thursday of November next as a Day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the heavens. And I recommend to them that, while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to His tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners, or sufferers in the

lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty hand to heal the wounds of the nation, and to restore it, as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes, to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquility, and union.” Saint Pio of Pietrelcina said, “Jesus, who cannot suffer long to keep you in affliction will come to relieve and comfort you by infusing fresh courage into your soul.” And, Saint Francis of Assisi reminds us, “All the darkness of the world cannot extinguish the light of a single candle.” Happy Thanksgiving Vivat Jesu!

Program Director – Brother John Sutcliffe

The R. I. Knights of Columbus councils and their affiliated assemblies are collecting NEW gifts for both men and women to be distributed at the R. I. Veterans Home on Monday, December 21st.

“Last year, as the donations were being unloaded, one of the staff members took a winter hat and presented it to an

elderly veteran in a wheelchair who immediately started crying. He said to the staffer, "Is this for me? Did someone

buy this for me?" A simple inexpensive item was probably the only gift he received last year and it brought him to

tears because he did not feel that he was forgotten.”

If you want to get involved in this project, see page 7, and contact Brother John Sutcliffe at (401) 596-0427.

The Knights of Columbus surpassed $100 billion of life insurance in force this week, marking an important

milestone in the Catholic fraternal benefit society’s mission to protect the future of Catholic families.

This milestone was achieved despite continuing adverse conditions affecting the insurance industry.

Established in 1882 by a young Catholic priest, the organization — which offers its line of top-rated products

exclusively to its members and their eligible family members — manages $21 billion in assets and ranks 939 on

the 2015 Fortune 1000 list, placing it among the largest life insurers in North America.

“The $100 billion milestone is not simply a number,” said Knights of Columbus CEO Carl A. Anderson. “It

highlights the fact that each year we are protecting the future of more Catholic families, continuing the mission

of our founder, Venerable Father Michael J. McGivney.”

The Knights of Columbus offers insurance to its members and their families through a network of more than

1,500 dedicated, professional agents in the United States and Canada — all of whom are members of the

Knights of Columbus.

“With each dollar of top-rated insurance in force that our professional agency force adds, additional, meaningful

security is provided to the families whose livelihoods we protect,” said Anderson.

The $100 billion milestone caps a year in which the Knights of Columbus set a new record for insurance sales

with $8 billion sold, earned the top rating of A++ Superior from AM Best for the 40th consecutive year, and

was named a “World’s Most Ethical Company” for the second consecutive year by the Ethisphere Institute®.
