Over 250 years of expertise…Royal Botanic Gardens Kew The Royal Botanic Gardens Kew has a remarkable heritage, originally a nine-acre site on the banks of the River Thames, it was first laid out in 1759 by Princess Augusta, mother of King George III.

Over 250 years later the gardens today cover 326 acres, are home to 40 historically important buildings and house the largest living plant collection in the world, with over 40,000 species. On 3 July 2003 the gardens became a United Nations World Heritage Site.

Kew Gardens receives over 1.35 million visitors a year from around the world and has a strong and growing

membership of over 80,000 supporters worldwide.
