Editorial Oh, our poor Club! No matter what our Committee - which is composed entirely of volunteers elected by members at AGM - does, there are always critical members and some other persons who are too eager to denigrate its efforts. Recent events have resulted in financial and legal problems for the Club, and in the resignation of the long - serving Dr Margaret Bayes, to whom a Tribute appears on a later page. Also Included in this issue is a reminder of the KCJ “Code of Personal Conduct,” which applies to and must be observed by ALL KCJ members.

I am happy to have been able to include some Members’ contributions, and also one from our Hon Vet, in this issue. Please do send me contributions for future issues.

Stephen Lawson [email protected]

My Junior Handling Experience by Emma Parkin

It took me 8 years to persuade my dad to get a dog and little did I know how much it would change my life for the better. Not only do I have a companion in Reggie, but I have found a hobby I really love.

I haven’t been doing junior handling very long, 7 months in fact, but I think it is safe to say I won’t be stopping anytime soon.

Though I haven’t been doing junior handling very long the opportunities it has already given me are amazing.

In August 2019 I was allowed to go on my first big trip with Claire White to the UK without mum and dad and we competed in 3 dog shows, two of which I qualified Reggie for Crufts and one of them I qualified him for the Cocker Spaniel puppy of the year; so it’s safe to say we had a successful trip apart from Claire’s car breaking down, however it did get us to the shows, so that was eventful to, say the least!

While we were away I was very fortunate to have a 1 to 1 lesson with a junior handling judge who taught some of the top junior handlers, she very kindly gave up 4 hours of her time which really helped me and I improved massively on my handling I also learnt things I have never heard of before. She was impressed how well I had been taught. She was a lovely lady who also came to Bournemouth to support me in my classes and took me to watch YKC and junior handling, it was fascinating to watch the more advanced junior handling. Towards the end of the trip Claire and I were apparently going shopping or so I thought we walked into the coffee shop and my mum was sat in front of me my jaw then dropped and I burst into happy tears – so embarrassing! I am never trusting my mum and Claire again clearly they are far too good at keeping secrets from me. I have now started asking my dad for my next show dog. Let’s hope it doesn’t take 8 more years!

At the latest match we were asked to swap dogs which I really enjoyed, it was a challenge and a learning curve which helped to improve our handling.

Since I have started handling I have been lucky to show different breeds of different shapes and sizes, I have also qualified for the junior handling semi finals of the year which I am not attending due to saving my pennies for Crufts.

I am very excited to show Reggie at Crufts and him being my own dog makes it even more amazing as a year ago I didn’t know I would have a dog - let alone be going to Crufts with him.

Emma winning Best in Match on 17 November 2019 with Reggie - Granrose Out of The Blue under Judge Ian Hutchinson. A proud moment!

CHANNEL ISLAND DOG OF THE YEAR COMPETITION 2019

The Channel Island Dog of the Year 2019 competition - hosted by the Kennel Club of Jersey - was held on Saturday, 15th February 2020 at the Royal Jersey Showground, RJA&HS, Trinity, under U.K. Judge, Mr Tom Mather. Unfortunately, due to adverse weather conditions, a number of Guernsey competitors had to withdraw their entries and the agility finals also had to be postponed until 28 March to coincide with The Kennel Club of Jersey’s Championship Show.

A 15 month old Scottish Terrier by the name of Berrybreeze Quintella at McKalay but pet-named Matilda, owned by Anna Pinto and Fiona Whitehead swept the board, first winning Puppy of the Year and then going on to the notable achievement of winning overall Dog of the Year, against top competition. But that was only the beginning! She then went to the UK to compete in a Scottish Terrier Breed Club Championship Show, where she won her Class, the Bitch Challenge Certificate and Best in Show. At Crufts she won the Junior Bitch Class and the Reserve Bitch Challenge Certificate only being beaten by the Best of Breed Winner; a remarkable achievement for such a young dog. DOGS and CORONAVIRUS

by Nick Thomas, MRCVS, of New Era Veterinary Hospital, Hon Vet to KCJ

With the current coronavirus outbreak attracting so much media attention and causing the cancellation of so many events (not including Crufts at the time of writing this!), it is interesting that the COVID-19 virus originated in animals. The thinking is that this is primarily a bat virus, although genetic input from other species such as snakes and pangolins have been postulated. It is therefore reasonable to ask if transmission of the virus could pass to or from another species (such as cats and dogs)? Can any pet carry coronavirus?

The current COVID-19 virus is not related to canine coronavirus which tends to cause mild and self- limiting diarrhoea.

There are currently no reports of any dogs or cats developing COVID-19 and it is very unlikely that they are capable of sustaining the infection. They could act as “passive” carriers of virus particles on their skin, but anything could do this and the virus would rapidly die off outside the body.

There has been a report in Hong Kong of a dog testing positive to COVID-19, but we must be cautious in interpreting this result. The test involves amplifies the genetic material carried in the virus many times, and it may be that the test picked up harmful particles from the dog’s nose, but this does not necessarily mean there was an active infection. The dog is in quarantine as a precaution and undergoing further tests. Even so it seems very, very unlikely that virus multiplication is taking part in domestic pets.

There are vaccines in some countries against coronavirus in cats and dogs, but it is unlikely they would provide protection against COVID-19 as they are very different strains completely. The current advice for protection of both you and your pet is well publicised and straightforward: Cover up your mouth with a tissue or sleeve if coughing or sneezing, wash your hands with soap and water often, avoid contact with people who are unwell, do not touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean.

The take home message is that dogs are unlikely to transmit the virus. However, it may be able to survive on them for short periods so basic hygiene precautions when dealing with any pets from a potentially infected household would apply in that case.

Dr Margaret Bayes MBE

The Kennel Club of Jersey Committee presented Margaret in early February 2020 with a thank you bouquet and card for her outstanding commitment serving the KCJ for many years as Registrar, President and latterly Chairman. Margaret will now be able to take life at a slower pace and enjoy showing her dogs without the responsibilities of the KCJ. The committee wishes her well.

A to Z OF DOG BREEDS - B is for BRITISH BULLDOG Hopefully articles such as this one will be helpful to KCJ Members as well as to any non-Members who might be considering homing the breed featured. Members are very welcome to submit informative articles about their particular breeds for inclusion in future issues of the KCJ Newsletter.

The first reference to the word “Bulldog” dates back to 1631 or 1632 in a letter by a man named Preswick Eaton where he writes “procuer mee too good Bulldogs and let them be sent by ye first shipp”. The designation “Bull” was applied because of the dog’s use in the sport of “Bull Baiting”. Over the centuries, dogs used for bullbaiting developed the stocky bodies, massive heads and jaws that typify the breed. Thankfully, the sport of bullbaiting was made illegal in England by the Cruelty to Animals Act 1835. Therefore, the Bulldog had outlived its usefulness in England as a sporting animal and its active or working days were numbered. However, emigrants did have a use and in the mid-17th. century in New York, Bulldogs were used as a citywide round up effort led by Governor Richard Nicolls. Bulldogs were trained to seize a Bull by the nose long enough for a rope to be secured around its neck.

Today’s Bulldog looks tough but cannot perform the job it was originally created for with the inability to grip with such a short muzzle although I’m not sure Kobe is aware of this when he has hold of his favourite toy!

The Bulldog is smooth coated, thick set, low in stature, broad but compact. Ears should be set high and wide apart with a broad and square jaw. Neck, moderate in length, thick, deep and strong with deep broad shoulders, very powerful and muscular. Ribs should be well rounded with forelegs stout and strong.

These days Bulldogs come in a large variety of colours but the breed standard states “whole or smut including brindles, reds with their various shades, fawns, fallows, white and pied”. Other colours are not recognised despite the marketing ploy of unethical breeders who market them as rare often with little thought of the health implications. The Kennel Club refuses to register Merle in this breed as it is known to have proven health issues.

The Bulldog temperament is alert (Kobe doesn’t miss a thing however small it is) dependable, courageous but extremely affectionate in nature and will happily snooze all day!

The Bulldog is popularly used to represent England due to its association with Winston Churchill’s defiance of Nazi Germany, it is also the official mascot of the United States Marine Corps with many bases having their own mascot on base.
