FY2010

The Kempe Foundation - Giving Hope to Abused and Neglected Children

Nearly 800,000 children are reported as having been abused or neglected in this country each year. This includes 11,000 in Colorado alone. But child abuse is not a hopeless cause. We see success stories every day.

These children need superheroes. Superheroes like you.

The Kempe Foundation Mission StatementThe Kempe Foundation will increase awareness, engage in advocacy and secure and provide resources for the prevention and treatment of child abuse.

To fulfill our mission, The Kempe Foundation provides financial support for the programs of The Kempe Center.

The Kempe Center

The Kempe Center treats abused children, trains professionals, and conducts research to ensure a healthy and hopeful future for these innocent victims. Every child seen at The Kempe Center is in the hands of the nation’s leading experts on child abuse.

The Kempe Center Mission Statement

The Kempe Center will provide and improve direct clinical services, improve clinical service delivery systems, and provide training, education and consultation programs to prevent and treat child abuse and neglect in Colorado and throughout the nation.

A Legacy of Hope

In 1962, Dr. C. Henry Kempe and his colleagues led the identification and recognition of child abuse with their defining paper, The Battered Child Syndrome. This paper was regarded as the single most significant event in creating awareness and exposing the reality of abuse. We never, ever forget his mission, vision, and belief that change is possible.change is possible.

Dear Friends,

As we reflect on the past year, we are at once challenged and encouraged. We are challenged by the struggle to do a bit more with a bit less to prevent and treat child abuse and neglect, but we are encouraged by the progress we’ve made in helping children. And now, as perhaps never before, we are encouraged by the selfless generosity of the many people and organizations that support Kempe, through their monetary gifts, through their time and through the encouragement they provide to us to continue to fight child abuse and neglect.

Over the course of the year, The Kempe Center provided services to almost 800 children through prevention and intervention programs such as the Justice Initiative for Drug Endangered Families, the Kempe Under Sixes Program, and the Child Protection Team, offering significant improvement in their lives as they were helped to cope with the trauma of abuse and neglect. Add to these the families served through the Kempe Therapeutic Preschool program, providing guidance and support for preschool children and their families. Add to these the hundreds of counselors, educators/trainers, social work professionals and law enforcement personnel who received training and advice through The Kempe Center. We celebrated the important outcomes research of the Fostering Healthy Futures Program, which documents the positive effect of mentoring youth in out-of-home placement. With a full year at our new home in the Gary Pavilion where we consulted and collaborated with colleagues and partners at The Children’s Hospital and the University of Colorado Denver – School of Medicine, you begin to understand why we are encouraged.

Working alongside our individual, community, foundation, government, and corporate friends, The Kempe Foundation raised over $2.6 million to continue the fight against child abuse and neglect. The number of our active donors increased by 5 percent to over 3000. Together, we saw the successes of a variety of awareness and fund raising events, from the Cherry Creek Sneak to IP5280’s Climbing for Kids to the Kempe Takes Manhattan Gala to the Salt on the Rim summer bash. In our efforts to spread awareness, we saw the airing of over 25 major media pieces and the continuation of our Superheroes campaign. We added almost 3200 Facebook members, and doubled the number of visits to our website to over 250,000. We continued to advocate on behalf of abused and neglected children, through Board participation on the Colorado Child Welfare Action Committee, through maintaining an important presence in the Statehouse and through direct communications with our legislative leaders to reaffirm Kempe’s expertise as a leading resource for issues related to child abuse and neglect.

Despite our success, the challenges remain great. There is much work still to do to eradicate child abuse and neglect as stresses on families mount. We know that nearly 11,000 children suffered from abuse in Colorado last year. Nationally, that number was nearly 800,000 with 1740 dying as the result of abuse and neglect. While these numbers are not acceptable, we nevertheless remain encouraged – by the progress we see in raising awareness, by the dedication of the professionals striving to end abuse, and by the strength of the amazing partnerships we’ve forged in this battle. Our vision is a world without any abuse or neglect. Until we reach that time, we know that our mission at Kempe is one shared with all of you, our supporters and colleagues. We – and the children we serve – are grateful. You provide us the hope and encouragement to go forward into our next challenges together.

Sincerely,

Rob Tallmadge Andrew Sirotnak, MD, FAAP The Kempe Foundation Interim President and CEO The Kempe Center Interim Executive Director

Kempe Takes Manhattan Gala

Over 600 people gathered on April 16, 2010 to celebrate in New York style and support The Kempe Foundation. This event generated approximately $170,000 in net proceeds, which helped Kempe continue its clinical services, advocacy, training, education and research to prevent and treat child abuse and neglect.

Kempe Takes Manhattan recreated the iconic excitement and glamour of New York City during a dinner inspired by Big Apple cuisine, a Broadway-themed musical revue, live auction, and Studio 54 discotheque. Kempe Takes Manhattan also featured a special tribute to the life and work of dedicated Kempe champion, Board member, and founder of The Kempe Foundation Alliance, Georgia Imhoff. Gail and George Johnson chaired the event, pictured here with Stacy Ohlsson.

Kempe Year in review

FY2010

Kempe Superheroes

The Kempe Foundation believes that anyone can be a superhero to an abused or neglected child. During Child Abuse Prevention Month in April 2010, we revamped our Kempe Superhero Campaign to demonstrate that ordinary people can do extraordinary things to help children.

Kempe ran a series of superhero-themed public service announcements on radio and television stations as well as billboards. Our 2010 superheroes included Anne Trujillo, Channel 7 News Anchor; Katherine Ridenhour and Angela Cook, Local Firefighter Chiefs; John-Michael Liles, Colorado Avalanche; Katie Layman, Miss Colorado 2009; Rod Smith, Former Denver Bronco; and Martha Rubi, The Kempe Foundation Board Member. These individuals demonstrated that someone does not need superpowers to be a hero to an abused or neglected child.

In addition to the Kempe Superhero campaign, we had multiple news stories appear on television during Child Abuse Prevention Month.

Cherry Creek Sneak

The Kempe Foundation received pledges and donations through the Cherry Creek Sneak as part of Child Abuse Prevention Month in April 2010. During its first year as the charitable beneficiary of pledges, Kempe raised over $27,000 and acquired over 500 new donors. A few of the participating teams included Georgia’s Team, in memory of Georgia Imhoff, and Team Morgan’s Run, in honor of Morgan Woodward; pictured here with The Kempe Foundation staff.

The pledging partnership will continue through FY 2012.

The Kempe Foundation major accomplishments

Child Protection Team

Our pediatricians, Drs. Sirotnak, Chiesa and Wells, passed the American Board of Pediatrics examination and are among the first in the nation to be board certified in Child Abuse Pediatrics.

Dr. Sirotnak was elected to a six year term on the child abuse sub board of this organization.

In addition, Dr. Sirotnak is President of The Children’s Hospital Medical Staff; member of The Children’s Hospital Board of Directors; member of The Children’s Hospital Foundation Board of Trustees and was again a 5280 Magazine’s Best Doc in Child Abuse Pediatrics.

We continue to train the next generation of leaders in the field. Child Abuse Pediatrics Fellow Sandeep Narang, JD, MD, graduated to become Assistant Professor of Pediatrics with the Child

Abuse and Neglect Team at the University of Texas Health Science Center - San Antonio.

Perpetration Prevention Program

Arrival of the third edition of Juvenile Sexual Offending: Causes Consequences and Correction (Ryan, Leversee and Lane; Wiley) was a highly anticipated and celebrated event at the Center, and a tremendous personal and professional accomplishment for Gail Ryan.

The original text was published in 1991, the second edition in 1997. This third edition captures the enormous advances in the field, reflecting tremendous strides in research on brain growth and development, and the impact of positive and negative life experiences on the brain. The book continues to be the seminal text for teaching certification or academic courses for clinicians and others working with youth who have molested children. Ryan teaches courses in a variety of venues across the country and at Kempe using this text. In 1983, she founded the National Adolescent Perpetration Network (NAPN), which is a cooperative network of multidisciplinary professionals working with sexually abusive youth in the US and abroad.

Ryan also received the Brandt F. Steele Award from The Kempe Center and the first Gary Burguin Award from the Colorado Sex Offender Management Board.

3

Fostering Healthy Futures

Fostering Healthy Futures (FHF) had a very exciting year as it reached two significant milestones: (1) the program enrolled its 500th participant into the research-based clinical program and (2) FHF surpassed 50,000 hours of training for graduate students who serve as mentors in the program. FHF also provided over 70 no-cost cognitive, academic, social and behavioral screening assessments for foster children, and 32 children were enrolled in the mentoring and skills group prevention program.

On the research side of the program, eight papers were accepted for publication, and the first paper examining mental heath outcomes for children in the FHF program was published in the prestigious Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.

Finally, FHF was honored to be selected as a finalist for the El Pomar Awards for Excellence program.

Julia and Mark Gwaltney have supported The Kempe Foundation for five years. They first heard about Kempe from friends who invited them to tour the Kempe Therapeutic Preschool. They want “to give children a second chance, or even a first chance, to have a normal kid’s life.”

With a strong belief in the work Kempe does, they are committed to fund the cause so that Kempe can continue its critical work. Julia explains, “It’s a whole brain exercise. We connect to the mission with our right brains, emotionally, and the left brains, logically. With two young children of our own, it is hard to imagine that someone could mistreat a child and our heart goes out to help them. If people don’t help treat the children now then society pays much more later. A Kempe donation is a logical investment in society.”

They also like to leverage their donations through the Colorado Child Care Tax Credit and the Encana employee matching fund.

Corporate SUpport

The Kempe Foundation has received many generous donations from Encana employees and Encana’s matching program for several years. Joyce Witte has been Encana’s Community Investment Advisor for 6 1/2 years. She explains that Encana supports employee giving through three programs:

• Annual Campaign - Employees register to use payroll deduction in October. This way they can plan their giving for the year and only have to have small deductions from their paychecks. The charities receive the whole amount in the beginning when the employees enroll.

• Matching Gifts - Encana matches gifts from employees to charities.

• Employee volunteer program - The employees and their families can track volunteer hours to qualify for a $1,000 grant to a charity.

Encana matches up to $25,000 per employee per year, combining all three programs. Kempe thanks Encana employees for their generous support!

Three cheers for the Helen K. and Arthur E. Johnson Foundation for their three-tiered approach to financial support for Kempe.

The Johnson Foundation’s generosity to two Kempe Capital Campaigns, ongoing annual support grants and matching funds contributed in recognition of their employees’ donations have helped Kempe to sustain and increase programs and services for several decades.

Since 1948, the Helen K. and Arthur E. Johnson Foundation’s support of non-profits have relieved suffering, met basic human needs, promoted self-sufficiency, and enriched the quality of life in Colorado. The Kempe Foundation is grateful for their support.

Dick Saunders has supported The Kempe Foundation for over 16 years first as a donor then as a member of our Board of Directors. He has served on the Board for 11 years and was chair for three. He is also a past Kempe Community Award Honoree. Dick and Jeanne Saunders believe so strongly in Kempe’s innovative programs to help abused and neglected children that they have included Kempe in their estate plans. Dick said, “It is our pleasure to include Kempe in our estate plans so that they can continue to help kids. There’s nothing more important to our society than keeping kids safe. So we see funding it in perpetuity as a necessity.”

Dick and Jeanne are founding members of the Kempe Society, which was created to honor and recognize individuals who have helped to continue the life-saving work for abused and neglected children through planned giving. Dick and Jeanne agree that, “It was an easy decision to leave a legacy that

will help kids far into the future.”

Since 2005, IP5280’s Climbing For Kids has raised funds for children by climbing Colorado 14ers. During the fourth annual Climb in August 2009 at Grays Peak, The Kempe Foundation was honored to be a beneficiary with The Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Climbers paid a $50 registration fee and raised additional funds through pledges from friends and family prior to climbing the mountain.

The Climb, which began with 15 climbers in 2005, had over 120 climbers in 2009 raising $50,000 total for The Kempe Foundation and The Children’s Hospital Foundation.

As you look at the long list of people who honored Georgia Imhoff with a gift in her memory, it is obvious the kind of impact she had on Kempe. People loved her, admired her, emulated her – and miss her.

Anyone who met Georgia was immediately aware that she was special. She exuded grace, spirit, and a passion for the plight of abused and neglected children. She had a great sense of humor. There was simply no one else like her.

Georgia made other people feel special as well. Somehow Georgia managed to make each person think that her day would have been less without each and every one of them. An extraordinary gift; one of many.

I have a photograph of Georgia in my journal. Many people must have some token by which they remember her. Even without the keepsakes,

Georgia would be impossible to forget. She changed lives.

She saved children. She loved her family. She was Georgia.

The family legacy of Drs. Henry and Ruth Kempe and their passion to help abused and neglected children continues in their children and grandchildren. Last year, Sam Biermann, son of Dr. Jenny Kempe-Biermann and grandson of Henry and Ruth demonstrated his generosity during his Bar Mitzvah. Sam designated that gifts for his Bar Mitzvah would go to The Kempe Foundation. In total, 58 donors contributed in honor of Sam. Additionally, Sam spent time volunteering at The Kempe Therapeutic Preschool during the summer prior to his birthday.

Sam’s older siblings Henry and Anne also designated The Kempe Foundation as their beneficiary during their Bar and Bat Mitzvahs. Together, the three children have raised over $16,000 for The Kempe Foundation.

“We are a very close family and we all share a passion for helping abused and neglected children,” said Jenny Kempe-Biermann. “My children want to help carry on the legacy of their grandparents by supporting such an important cause.”

Kempe CenTer meTriCSActivities and Outcomes Report

Fiscal Year 2010: July 1, 2009 – June 30, 2010

Each year The Kempe Center gathers data for analyzing and reporting programs’ annual activities and outcomes. The benefits from collecting, disseminating and publishing essential Kempe benchmark data include: enhanced planning, outcome reporting, year-over-year comparisons, fulfilling funding request and reporting requirements, increased transparency, possible efficiency gains, and providing information of programmatic successes. A listing of staffs’ publications, awards and recognitions is produced to document the professional caliber of scholarly research and clinical outcomes to be disseminated nationally and internationally. Center program staffs report their data to document achievement of each program’s specific mission. The complete Metrics Report is available at www.kempe.org/aboutkempe.

Direct Services for ChildrenThe Kempe Center provided direct services to 796 children in FY10 via six programs in 40 Colorado counties and 12 states, an increase of 13.5% when compared with seven programs serving 701 children in FY09. Services included: mental health therapy, a mentoring curriculum, case consultation, injury assessments, comprehensive mental health assessments, preschool classroom therapy, and other treatment. Most Kempe direct service programs saw an increase in the number of children served over the prior year as child abuse cases in Colorado have increased over that period. For example, the Child Protection Team treated 494 children; more than a 22% increase from 401 in FY09.

Geographic distribution of the children served did not have a significant proportional change within the Denver metropolitan area counties.

Kempe was involved with training and educating 6,336 individuals in FY10 with over 22,288 “people training hours” provided. These were direct contact presentations at workshops, university classes, job sites, community locations, and national and international conferences.

Kempe’s programs provided thousands of hours of valuable career training to medical and graduate students. In addition to the numbers above, Kempe trained 16 Fostering Healthy Future (FHF) program interns as mentors who were Master level graduate students from local universities, interns serving in the Child Trauma and Under Sixes Programs, one clinical psychology PhD candidate worked in FHF as a Kempe Center Berger Fellow, two Harris Fellow clinical psychology students worked in the Preschool, and another Berger Fellow physician specialized in advanced clinical training in child abuse with the Child Protection Team.

Resources

In FY10, The Kempe Foundation raised $2.618 million for operating and capital needs. In addition, Kempe received “in-kind” gifts with total value of $40,778 for enrichment materials, supplies and activities in support of Kempe’s children and caregivers.

Volunteers provided 2,603 hours of service to support the work of The Kempe Center’s Programs as well as The Kempe Foundation (equivalent of $54,283).

Advocacy

A key part of the Foundation’s mission is to advocate on behalf of abused and neglected children by working with state and local leaders to develop public policy that serves in the best interest of this vulnerable population.

Kempe representatives helped draft legislation, testified before legislative committees and monitored more than 15 bills during the session relating to children and child-abuse issues.

Public Awareness

Over 40 stories featured The Kempe Foundation in newspapers, magazines, radio, and television newscasts. Kempe’s public service announcements and news stories appeared on all five Metro Denver television stations (KUSA, KCNC, KMGH, KWGN, and KDVR) as well as on Comcast channels and Altitude. Throughout the year, Kempe appeared in the Denver Post, The Villager, Aurora Sentinel, Denver Business Journal, 5280, Denver Magazine, Colorado Expression, ColoradoView, Blacktie Colorado, and a variety of online magazines and blogs.

Additionally, Kempe’s partner during Child Abuse Prevention Month in April, KMGH 7, ran five different public service announcements 834 times. Azteca also ran a Spanish-language PSA during April.

Website and Social Media:

Unique visitors and pageviews increased in FY2010 over the previous year, which means that not only did kempe.org receive more web traffic, but also that individuals spent more time on the site and looked at more pages on the site.

During the last year, Kempe’s blog and YouTube Channel have had over 13,300 unique story and video views. Kempe’s Facebook and Twitter accounts have nearly 4,000 followers, up from 1,477 at the end of FY2009.

In the fall of 2008, Kempe conducted a market survey to compare with previous surveys that measured Kempe’s recognition in the community. In June 2010, Kempe’s pro-bono advertising agency, Vladimir Jones, conducted the survey to see if name recognition had increased since the 2008 survey. The statewide recognition of The Kempe Center’s name increased from 29 to 37 percent and awareness of The Kempe Foundation increased from 31 to 35 percent. Additionally, Denver metro residents’ familiarity with The Kempe Center increased from 28 to 37 percent during the two year period.

The survey also illustrated that child abuse is a very important issue, with 97 percent of respondents agreeing that the issue of child abuse prevention is important and 71 percent believing prevention to be “extremely important.”
