History
Background note on William R. Keeney:
William Reynolds Keeney, 1858 – 1934, represents one of the many talented amateur
photographers active at the turn-of-the-century. For Keeney, photography was a leisure past time,
which he pursued with creativity and professionalism. His collection of photographs demonstrates
the variety of printing processes blossoming at that point in the history of photography. The
collection also documents the family history of the extended Keeney and Jones families through
commercially produced photographs.
William Keeney was born in Philadelphia in 1858, the son of Caleb and Mary Pancoast Keeney.
He was a member of the Religious Society of Friends, and graduated from Friends Central School
in 1874. He then went on to the Philadelphia College of Pharmacy where he received his Ph.G.
degree in 1878, and was a fellow of Zeta Phi Alpha.
In his business life, Keeney joined his father in operating Keeney's Pharmacy at 16th and Arch
Streets, Philadelphia. Later he became the assistant registrar at Philadelphia College of Pharmacy.
In 1886 Keeney married Mary Anna Jones and the couple took up housekeeping at 108 N. 16th
Street, the house next door to the Pharmacy. It was in 1887, with the birth of Keeney's first
daughter, Susan Dorothy, that William began to pursue his interest in photography. Noted as his
first attempt at photography is a picture of Sue Dorothy seated under the Christmas tree in 1888.
Keeney worked with a 4 x 5 view camera, making glass plate negatives which were then printed out
on albumen paper. His experience with chemicals in the pharmacy, made the technical aspects of
photography easy for him to handle.
Keeney's main subject of interest centered on his family. The majority of his photographs record
the growth and activities of his two daughters, Sue Dorothy and Virginia. Keeney does not limit
himself to portraits, he takes many pictures of the girls at play. Keeney himself participates in the
fun by encouraging the girls to dress up and pose for the camera. The series of pictures that Keeney
took of his daughters in Japanese costume having a tea ceremony were bound into a small book
which the girls distributed as a Christmas gift.
Each year Keeney produced photos to be used as Christmas cards, and his daughters added a verse
of poetry to go with it. Even in later life, Sue Dorothy and Virginia carried on this tradition by
making their own art work and holiday verse which they had reproduced photographically.
Keeney photographed many of the subjects that people today still take an interest in recording:
vacation trips to Watkins Glen, the coast of Rhode Island, Wildwood New Jersey, and the peaceful
farm estates on the Main Line. He records family groups on holiday together at Oconeo, George
Justice's farm in Yardley, Pa.
But Keeney takes more than a casual snap shooter's interest in photography. As new processes are
developed, Keeney masters them. In 1888 he begins to keep a record of all his work, mounting
cyanotype proofs in albums in chronological order. After reviewing the proofs, Keeney printed and
mounted the photos using a variety of processes. In 1895 he begins to use the new silver gelatin
papers that were introduced on the market. Keeney kept up with the currents in technique and
composition by attending the YMCA Camera Club in Philadelphia.
In the 1890s Pictorialistic photography was flowering and the platinum process was embraced by
many photographers as a medium for artistic expression. Keeney learned the process and selected
his favorite views from his vast collection to print using the platinum process. The platinum print
reveals as no other printing process can, the subtleties and beauties of the tonal range of the dry
plate negative. Keeney exhibited three of his striking landscapes of the Darby Creek at the YMCA
Camera Club show in 1896.
Keeney did not hesitate to enhance or manipulate his negatives. Frequently, he vignetted the faces
of his subjects to create professional looking cabinet card portraits. In the Mother Goose Album, in
which his daughters dressed up to illustrate the well-known nursery rhymes, figures were hand
painted directly on the negatives. This work may have been done by Keeney's wife, Mary, who was
an accomplished artist. Mary studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. She was a
member of the Art Union of Philadelphia, and supported the work of the PFA. The CCHS
collection features a series of Mary Keeney's etchings. She also painted figures on lantern slides.
On some occasions she borrowed the camera to take pictures herself.
In 1915 the Keeney home and Pharmacy were razed for the construction of the Benjamin Franklin
Parkway. The family then moved to St. Davids, taking up residence at 318 E. Lancaster Ave. Here
Dorothy had an elaborate garden which is diagrammed in one of her Christmas cards.
As the children got older, Keeney used his camera for more than recording the family. His
daughter, Sue Dorothy, took an interest in botany, so naturally Keeney assists her by photographing
specimens of plants indigenous to Pennsylvania in a studio environment over a ten year period.
Each photo is mounted and labeled with the scientific name. Sue Dorothy received a BS ed. degree
from the University of Pennsylvania in 1927, specializing in Botany. Later Keeney made a series of
lantern slides for Sue Dorothy to use in the classroom. She was a science teacher at the West
Philadelphia High School from 1927 until her retirement in 1943. She also authored a book of
poetry entitled "The Circle of the Sun," in 1950.
Virginia Keeney inherited her father's photographic interests. At an early age she began to take
pictures with a miniature camera. After earning a degree from Swarthmore College, Virginia taught
English for a time at Friends Central. She travelled extensively in the Caribbean, South America,
Spain, Hawaii, and the Mediterranean, to photograph and produce travelogues to be shown to shut-
ins on the Main Line. She also authored a book of condensed Bible stories entitled "Centuries
Ago."
The Keeney sisters were active in their later years in the Garden Club of Wayne, the Valley Friends
Meeting, Radnor Historical Society, the Saturday Club and the Needlework Guild of Wayne. Sue
Dorothy passed away in the early 1970s, and Virginia died in 1976. The sisters treasured their
father's photographic legacy and included it in their estate willed to the Chester County Historical
Society. Their estate also included a large collection of china, glass, toys and dolls, textiles, books,
personal papers, and other contents of their home.
