Boaters and businesses along the Trent-Severn Waterway (TSW) got a nice Canada Day gift from

Parks Canada on Monday, June 23. The service announced that it is returning to pre-2013 hours of operation and ceasing with mobile crews. It means boaters can access the locks between 9 a.m. and 7 p.m. Friday to Sunday and long weekends until Sept. 1. The rest of the week, the hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. During the less busy Sept. 2 to Oct. 13 period, the hours will be reduced to 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Thanksgiving and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Thursday. And, the mobile crews will be a thing of the past “as soon as possible.” That means a return to “upon arrival service” at all lock stations and bridges along the TSW. Just as we heartily criticized Parks Canada for clawing back the hours for 2013, we have to congratulate them for returning the status quo. Clearly, they have now finished

crunching the numbers from last season and have found their ill-fated decision to cut hours and implement roving crews merely cut boating numbers – and revenue - along the canal. The business community in the City of Kawartha Lakes has said all along that the move affected their bottom lines and were clearly concerned with what would happen if last year’s hours and mobile crews were kept in place. This move will support tourism and economic development across the City of Kawartha Lakes. We must also applaud local Member of Parliament Barry Devolin for his keen attention to the matter as well as various business representatives and groups such as the Voices of the Trent Severn for their boisterous lobbying efforts. We now encourage local boaters to get out there and use the lock system to help boost the numbers so we can ensure that Parks Canada does not claw back the hours once again based on declining usage. And, don’t forget to tell your out-of-town family and friends that a houseboat trip along the TSW is one for the bucket list!

Another hearing Thank you for your coverage of the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) hearing in Trent Lakes in the last edition of The Kawartha Promoter. Wearealreadyexperiencingheavytrucktrafficon our roads and if this quarry (Dewdney Mountain Farms) goes through, there will be more than 700 trucks a day on our roads. We share these local roads with school buses, motorcycles, bicycles, pedestrians, tractors, horses, buggies and cars. The hearing has been well attended each and every day and I passed the hat at two sittings and collected more than $1,000 which has been deposited to the Bobcaygeon BMO. CFRAD (Citizens for Responsible Aggregate Development) have borne the cost of all the legal fees and fees for experts to appear. These are private individuals with families and I believe they need to be supported. We, the residents of Bobcaygeon and beyond are grateful for their efforts. The repairs to the bridge on Highway 36 will cost more than $850,000. Our taxes we pay will have to cover this. Our property taxes will increase and property values will go down. People looking to move out of the GTA will look elsewhere when theylearnof theheavytrafficandtourists. (They)will rethink the Kawarthas as a prime tourist

Bike stolen Bike stolen – welcome to the City of Kawartha Lakes? Our family recently relocated to Bobcaygeon, looking for a change from city life and a more relaxed atmosphere and pace. After the second week of my daughter catching the school bus at the corner of County Road 8 and Verulum Drive, her blue bike was stolen on Thursday June 12 by someone. She rides her bike about a half mile to catch the school bus and leaves her bike behind a newspaper box. She has gone door-to-door in our community asking if anyone has seen it. We have tried to tell her that it doesn’t matter where you are, a bike should always be locked. We have also tried to rationalize that maybe someone needed that bike more than she did and maybe thought it was being left there or dumped there. She will never know, a hard lesson to learn when you are 14. Shame on the person that did this, we hope you enjoy her blue bike.Steve Winter Bobcaygeon

How lucky I am (Recently) the garage next door caught fireand burned to the ground taking the cottage with it. The heat was so intense that it did major damage to our permanent home. The vinyl fence melted to the ground along with the aluminum siding, windows cracked etc. We lost almost everything onthatsideofthehouse.Iwasterrifiedwiththefire,theheat,thesmokeandchemicalsthatwereburning. My two neighbours came running over and used my hose in all that heat and with things exploding to water down that side of my house untilthefiretrucksarrived.Ibelievetwoofthemwere responsible for helping to save my home. The propane line was very close and I was very fearful. The fire departments arrived and tookcontrol and focused on helping to save my home as well. The paramedics checked my husband as he was coughing and gagging from the fumes. So, again, I reflect and thank God for thepeople in this community and for the services that are available to us when we need them so I don’t think ‘how can I be this unlucky that everything bad seems to be happening.’ I look back and think just how very lucky I am to live here where people actually do care and do help. I also wish to express thanks to The Kawartha Promoter for its support when my dog went missing and for printing my letters, The Village Baptist Church, the Royal Canadian Legion members for their comradeship and support, Port 32 for the friendship they have extended to my husband and myself and to anyone else who has helped us in anyway over the past several months. OPP costs to impact budget The city will tell the province it does not support any changes to the Ontario Municipal Partnership Fund (OMPF) that would see $1.6 million eliminated to help offset Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) costs locally. In addition, they want those cuts and a further anticipated increase for OPP costs clearly displayed on future tax bills. Planned changes to the OPP funding formula are looming and while the city does not know the impact, the latest forecast is an average jump to $340 per household from $200. It will likely vary based on the value of your property, with a cost of $166.52 for a house assessed at $225,000 or $325 for a house assessed at $450,000. During the June 24 meeting, budget advisory committee chairman John Macklem said the city won’tbeflushwithfundsin2015andisfacinga“double digit” tax increase. However, director of corporate servicesMary-AnneDempsterclarifiedthat the city is looking to cap the tax increase at 2.5% plus higher OPP costs of 5-6%.

City to continue rural transit pilot The city will continue to offer rural and dial-a-ride transit - renewing a contract with provider, Kawartha Ground Transportation to June 27, 2015. Money for the program will continue to come out of the Dedicated Gas Tax Reserve and the program is also headed to the city’s performance improvement team (Black Belts) for a better analysis of what to do with the program in future. Council did not approve a staff report to take the program in-house and look into buying two accessible buses as well as hiring six part-time drivers and an administrative assistant.

Roof in, Prince St. out Ward 7 Coun. Brian Junkin was successful in getting council to take $41,000 from an already budgeted renovation of the Bobcaygeon Fire Hall and instead put the money towards emergency roof repairs. He was happy to do so as long as renovation funds are topped up in the 2015 budget. However, he learned that a budgeted upgrade for Prince St. in Bobcaygeon had been dropped in lieu of a Mary St. E. reconstruction. Junkin wanted an assurance there would be money in the 2015 budget for Prince St. but was told that will be up to the council of the day. A clearly alarmed Junkin said there was now no guarantee that Prince St. will ever be constructed. “What a blindside,” he said.

No GO for now The city has received no commitment from GO Transit to run a bus service into and out of Lindsay. Transit manager Todd Bryant said in a report, “Staff will continue to monitor and encourage GO Transit bus operations to include Kawartha Lakes and Lindsay as a viable and permanent serviced bus route.” The city got a memo from GO Transit director of policing and planning, Daniel Haufschild saying the city’s report from consultant Delcan was, “useful input to our ongoing planning and long term planning initiatives. Over the next two years, we anticipate undertaking a review of bus service across the GO Transit service area, including a comprehensive review of ridership in existing and potential future markets.”

FOUNDATION LAUNCHEDKAWARTHA LAKES – The new Kawartha Conservation Foundation was launched June 11 by its president and members of its volunteer board of directors. Kawartha Conservation staff and foundation members talked about how the new foundation is going to advance the work of the outgoing Friends of Kawartha Foundation. Chief Administrative Officer Rob Messerveypaid tribute to the “Friends” who, over a period of 18 years, helped support the vision and mandate of Kawartha Conservation by raising funds, promoting awareness, and engaging the community to restore and sustain a healthy environment for future generations. “They raised tens of thousands of dollars for environmental projects, such as this marsh boardwalk, securing grants for shoreline naturalization and education programs and, of course, Howlers Corners Off-leash Dog Park at Ken Reid.” Messervey said with that goal accomplished, many of the Friends group decided it was time to pass on the torch to a new group of volunteers. Arthur Gladstone is the new foundation president. He said he and the board are looking forward to engaging the community, from businesses with a love of the environment to individuals and families interested in becoming new foundation members. “We want to also involve communities in adopting their special natural areas, whether it is Ken Reid, Windy Ridge, Fleetwood Creek, the Pigeon River Headwaters, or Durham East Cross Forest,” Gladstone said.

Messervey noted that aging infrastructure, or a lack of infrastructure, is just one of the challenges across the watershed. Meanwhile, Gladstone announced that the new foundation is asking local graphic artists to enter a logo competition for the new entity. He said they are looking for an environmentally-friendly firmwith local environmental interests to partner with the foundation on the initiative. Interested local companies can contact Kawartha Conservation communications specialist Brent Kulba to obtain a contest outline and creative brief.

ExTENDED HOURS ANNOUNCED FOR TSW

KAWARTHA LAKES - Parks Canada has announced extended hours along the Trent-Severn Waterway. The welcome news for the City of Kawartha Lakes came via a press release on Monday, June 23. It means boaters can now navigate the lock system between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Monday to Thursday and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday to Sunday, Canada Day, the August Civic Holiday and Labour Day during the prime June 27 to Sept. 1 season. From Sept. 2 to Oct. 13, the hours revert back to 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday to Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sunday and Thanksgiving. In its press release, Parks Canada said the extended operating hours will support tourism, economic development “and help Canadians create memories, meaningful experiences and better connect with nature.” Parks Canada added that during the peak visitor season, it will end the use of mobile crews and will provide “upon arrival” service at all lock stations and bridges along the TSW “as soon as possible”. When Parks Canada cut back hours and initiated mobile crews for the 2013 season it was criticized across the City of Kawartha Lakes and along the entire TSW.

SCOTT TO CONTINUE DOGGED WAYS

By Lisa Gervais As the Ontario Legislature prepares to resume sitting July 2, re-elected Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock Member of Provincial Parliament Laurie Scott has not skipped a beat, beginning a post-election chat with a rant about the majority Liberals’continuing“fiscalmismanagement.” With Premier Kathleen Wynne vowing to bring forward the same budget that felled her government a couple of months ago, Progressive Conservative Scott lamented either raising taxes or increased spending and debt. She can’t understand how Wynne can possibly balance the books in three years’ time. “So, we’re all waiting for the downgrade in Ontario’s credit rating,” Scott said. She barely catches her breath before saying there is still government overspending, her constituents are still struggling to pay their Hydro bills and now they could be facing higher taxes. “It all comes down to affordability.” The Kawartha Promoter interrupts her for a moment, raising two issues that came up during the campaign. Liberal Rick Johnson claims that Scott was so busy criticizing the minority Liberals that she didn’t do her job of informing constituents about government programs that were in place, such as Hydro support for low-income seniors or the Active Seniors Grant. He also campaigned hard on what he brought to the riding during his time in government, calling into question what Scott has done in Opposition. In an interview post-election, Johnson praised PC MPPs Ted Arnott and Norm Miller for their ability to reach out across the aisle and work with the government. He said Scott’s style is to “yell and insult” and “why would anyone want to help her.” “Laurie is gong to have to start doing this.” Scott reacts strongly to the claims. As to not doing her job of informing constituents of government programs, she retorts “Is that true?

We help hundreds of people every month.” As for what she has brought to the riding, Scott says “I don’t take a list of everything around with me.” But, she does say that Ross Memorial Hospital’s dialysis unit came about when she was MPP in 2007 and mentions the Minden Community Centre, the seniors centre in Fenelon Falls, hospital upgrades and work on highway 35. She adds it was the Federal Government’s economic stimulus programs that brought a lot of projects to fruition under the Liberal Government duringJohnson’sterminoffice. She says her style isn’t all about yelling and

insulting. In fact she said she always talks to ministers before publicly raising issues. But her critical style is not far from the surface as she quickly adds at one point “but my goodness, they destroyed the horse racing industry. We’re gong to keepfightingforconstituents.” She is asked if those same constituents are disadvantaged by again having a member of a minority at Queen’s Park and says “I don’t think so.” Meanwhile, Johnson saidhe is confidentheis going to land a job somewhere in this new government.

BLUE CANOE PROGRAMHITS THE WATER

KAWARTHA LAKES - Landowners along the shoreline of city lakes should keep an eye on the waters for the Blue Canoe team out for its third season. Kawartha Conservation stewardship staff are traveling by canoe from dock to dock when weather permits, or door to door by foot, and attending local events and lake association meetings. They will be out on Balsam, Cameron, Pigeon, Sturgeon lakes, Canal, Four Mile and Mitchell. Their message is that landowners can protect water quality and contribute to the long-term health of their lakes by following some easy property maintenance practices, such as preventing shoreline erosion, limiting aquatic weed and blue-green algae growth, deterring Canada geese and reducing E.coli in the nearshore water, among other issues people may be experiencing. They will also offer information about lake management planning. Since the launch of the program in 2012, the Blue Canoe team has connected with more than 2,500 shoreline residents and cottagers in the Kawarthas through property visits, dock talks and community events. To find out where the Blue Canoe is going next,go to the calendar at KawarthaConservation.com/bluecanoe. Approximate dates and locations are posted two weeks ahead of time. If the timing is not convenient, an appointment can be made by contacting Kawartha Conservation at 705-328-2271 ext. 238 or [email protected].

DUSTIN ARDRON - OWNER OPERATORCITY OF KAWARTHA LAKES

Recently-opened Ardron Roofingis doing very well in the Bobcaygeon area. Owner Dustin Ardron said he is booking into August but reminds customers that roofing work doesn’t enduntil the weather turns frigid so if they have a

roofingissuetheyshouldgetintouchwithhim now. Clearing fulfillinganeed in thearea,he is quickly gaining a reputation for his honesty. He has been known to tell customers that they don’t need a new roof – just that they need to better maintain their roof in winter.

Continuing to grow!I would be more than happy to personally recommend Ardron Roofing. Dustin and his crew were well co-ordinated and detailed in every respect with total commitment to customer satisfaction. Clean-up was immaculate and great care was given to my many flower gardens and shrubs. It was a positive experience and we are happy with the end result. My new roof looks fantastic. - Katherine Long We were very happy with Dustin and his service. We had just completed an addition on our home and we were left with rain coming into our living room after our roofing contractor did not show up and we needed a new roof quickly. Dustin came to see our situation the same day and then arrived first thing the next morning, bringing his crew, and put shingles on the new roof so we could be dry that night. A couple of weeks later he came back to finish our existing roof and we were very happy with the entire job. We have since recommended Ardron to do our friend’s roof. - Chris and Gary Lever

OPPORTUNITY LOOMS WITH TEMPLES

BETHANY – The City of Kawartha Lakes economic development department says the completion of the Cham Shan Temple project will significantlycontribute to an increase in the number of annual visitors to Kawartha Lakes to increasing new business

and expansion opportunities for local businesses. In a press release, the department said, “It has been estimated that visitor spending could increase by approximately $3.5 million annually. These are dollars that will be spent at local retailers, food establishments, accommodations, and businesses in Kawartha Lakes. The project will also open a new market for local producers that will continue to support local procurement of food.” The department is encouraging the local business community to assess the potential opportunities from such an undertaking and share their opinion with the provincial government and local MPP. Over the past 20 years in the Bethany area, the Buddhist Association of Canada has been working on the temple, a project which will replicate the Four Great Buddhist Mountains in China. Currently in phase one, the four-phase project will encompass more than 1,700 acres of land crossing over the municipalities of Cavan Monaghan and Kawartha Lakes. Each phase of the project will include a main temple, a garden, and set of smaller temples. Once completed, the temples will be one of the largest cultural attractions across North America, in addition to a being spiritually, architecturallyandeconomicallysignificantprojectfor the region. The city said the Cham Shan Temple chose the location because it has the same geographic characteristics of the original Buddhist Mountains in

KINMOUNTGETTING GAS STATION

KINMOUNT – Kinmount is getting a new gas station. “It’s going to happen,” said Ward 3 Coun. David Hodgson, who along with Kinmount Freshmart owner TomLang,confirmedthemuch-anticipatednews. The two said Phillips Petroleum is the builder and the new gas station will either be an Ultramar or Pioneer. Construction is scheduled to begin mid-summer and should take about eight weeks. The location is next to the town’s LCBO. Lang said businesses have struggled with the absence of a gas station since Lucky’s closed about two years ago, forcing motorists to drive to Norland, Minden or Fenelon Falls. “Thebestthingaboutitisthebenefititbringstothe business community,” Hodgson said, noting gas stations and liquor stores are big draws. Lang said the business community is very excited. So, too, are local and out-of-town drivers, ATVers, snowmobilers and boaters.

Meanwhile, Hodgson said a dilapidated blue building on the outskirts of town will soon be torn down after it was recently sold, which will eliminate the eyesore from the prime location entering Kinmount from the south.

Horoscopes June 27 - July 11, 2014Melodie McCullough

Aries (March 21 to April 20) Canada Day is coming your way. Time to celebrate, Aries. Get out there and enjoy the fresh air and all the opportunities that come with long weekends and summer holidays.

Taurus (April 21 to May 21) Enjoy the surprises that life throws your way, dear Taurus. Everything does not have to be ordered and planned a year ahead. Just let things “come what may” and see “what may come”.

Gemini (May 22 to June 22) Money can mean many things to many people: love, power, security, dependency, freedom, control and self-esteem. What does it symbolize for you, Gemini? It is time to ask yourself this important question, because it will help you set your goals and determine your values in the near future.

Cancer (June 23 to July 23) You’ve heard of a “leap of faith”, Cancer? Perhaps the time has come to do just this. You must believe in yourself if you are to realize the great power that lies within you.

Leo (July 24 to Aug. 23) “The Secret of Genius is to carry the spirit of the child into old age, which means never losing your enthusiasm.”: Aldous Huxley. That’s right, Leo. We know you love children and children love you, too. Keep that youthful spirit and you will never grow old.

Virgo (Aug. 24 to Sept. 23) We urge you to tread cautiously in the days ahead. Listen to the opinions and ideas of others, as this will be very helpful as you wend your way through the intricate paths you will encounter.

Libra (Sept. 24 to Oct. 23) Practise gratitude, Libra. Find something every day for which to be thankful. Appreciation grows on you. The more you train yourself to be grateful, the more lovely things you will find worth recognizing.

Scorpio (Oct. 24 to Nov. 22) In their chosen career, Scorpions are known to be very good workers, with a good head for business. We are sure your co-workers sense this in you, Scorpio. Now you need to see it for yourself. Put your best foot forward and share some of those great ideas you have.

Sagittarius (Nov. 23 to Dec. 21) It is healthy to feel a range of emotions, Sag. Everyone loses their temper, is jealous and angry at some point. These are normal reactions to everyday life. Don’t beat yourself up. Don’t set unrealistic and rigid expectations upon yourself. You will be happier.

Capricorn (Dec. 22 to Jan. 20) Those born under the Capricorn sign are independent and confident, often appearing unemotional and calm. But there is also a moody side. Don’t let these temperaments control you; rather, learn to control them.

Aquarius (Jan. 21 to Feb. 19) In antiquity Aquarius was ruled by the planet Saturn, but since its discovery, Uranus is considered as the ruler. This means you have influences from both planets, believing in both conformity and unconventional ideas. This makes you a very interesting person to be around, Aquarius. Don’t hold back.

Pisces (Feb. 20 to March 20) Pisces is known as the most gentle and patient of the signs of the zodiac. This is so good. These traits will bode well over the coming days, and for many days to come.

FAMILY SPENDSSUMMERS ON TSW

BOBCAYGEON – As they cruise the Trent-Severn Waterway for five months every summer, somewould say the Laverdiere family is living the dream. Mark and his wife Giselle, along with children Crystal, Daniel and Luke recently returned to the waterway for their third summer. The other seven months of the year, they call Milden, Saskatchewan home. Their boat is named “Grace” because, as Mark explains: “For only by God’s grace have our dreams become reality.” Mark said he grew up on the streets of Barrie andusedtofishtofeedhimself.Hewouldlookatthe families on boats in the marina and dream. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do.” A welder, he said that when his back gave out a few years ago, the couple decided to take what little money they had and invest in a 40-foot boat they could live on in the summer “to try to enjoy life while we still can.” The children are home schooled and getting a great education along the waterway. In Bobcaygeon, Crystal said, “There’s lots of stuff to do, it is really pretty and everything is within walking distance.” Giselle said she is also getting into the new seasonal life of “relaxing and getting along and helping everyone out on the waterway. It will be a good summer.”Photo: The Laverdiere family spends its summers on the Trent-Severn Waterway. They are pictured here in Bobcaygeon. Photo by Lisa Gervais.

ANOTHER NEW DOCKAWARTHA LAKES - Another future doctor has been announced for the City of Kawartha Lakes with Matthew Adamson poised to begin the practiceof familymedicinewhenhefinisheshisfamily medicine residency in 2017. Adamson is studying medicine at the University of Toronto and will receive his M.D. in May 2015. “It has been a pleasure to work with Matthew regarding his decision to practice family medicine in the City of Kawartha Lakes. Matthew will complete a training elective this fall which will allow him the opportunity to explore the area further. The Kawartha Lakes Health Care Initiative (KLHCI)ispleasedtobeabletoprovidefinancialsupport to Matthew during his third and fourth years of medical school and during residency

training. KLHCI is also very pleased to know that as current members of the medical community begin to consider retirement that a commitment to practice is in place to assist with the continued care of patients. The continued recruitment of family doctors to the City of Kawartha Lakes means that the number of unattached patients, and those traveling long distances to see a family doctor, is being reduced,” said Cindy Snider, the recruitment and retention coordinator for KLHCI.

SCHOOLIMMUNIZATION CHANGES

‘Catch-up’ immunization clinics will be offered this summer to local students who require the vaccine that protects against meningococcal disease. The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit is offering the clinics in the City of Kawartha Lakes, Haliburton County and Northumberland County to help families meet new vaccine requirements coming into effect this fall for Ontario students. Meningococcal disease is one of three diseases for which students must now have proof of immunization (or a valid exemption). To book an appointment, call the health unit toll-free at 1-866-888-4577, ext. 1507. Under the changes, families of students attending elementary and secondary school will need to provide proof of immunization against meningococcal disease, as well as whooping cough (pertussis) and – for children born in 2010 or later – chickenpox (varicella). They must also ensure students have the updated dose requirements (number of shots) for tetanus,

NEW LOOK AT HEARING LOSS AND DEPRESSION

While several small studies have linked hearing loss with depression, they were limited in their sample sizes and their results often conflicted. However, a new and recent study based on a nation-wide sample offers more reliable results. For this study, more than 18,000 adults over age 18 were asked about their men-tal and physical health, and those over age 70 were also medically examined for hearing loss. Analysis of the data showed that adults suffering from hearing impairment are more likely than those with excellent hearing and deaf individuals to be depressed. Higher rates of depression were also noted among women and middle-aged individuals compared with those over age 70. Depression caused by hearing loss is not limited to seniors. Hearing aid users report significant improvements in many areas of their lives, ranging from their re-lationships at home and sense of independence to their social life. That’s why it’s so sad that millions of people are letting denial or vanity get in the way of treatments that can significantly improve the quality of their lives. Don’t be one of those people! Schedule a hearing test today.P.S. Individuals suffering from profound hearing loss are less likely to be depressed than people with un-treated hearing loss because they are more likely to have been diagnosed and treated with hearing instru-ments or cochlear implants. To learn more visit our website at “www.hearingdoctor.ca” or to schedule a hearing consultation, please call us at the number below.

diphtheria, polio and mumps. The requirements for measles and rubella immunizations are staying the same. All required vaccines are publicly funded however, parents and caregivers are responsible for providing proof of immunization (or a valid exemption) for students to the health unit. To find out more details about the newvaccine requirements for school-aged students under the regulatory changes, local residents can call the health unit toll-free at 1-866-888-4577 or visit www.hkpr.on.ca and click on the ‘Call to Arms’ image.

ORANGE ORDER TO PARADE

BOBCAYGEON - The Orange Order will take to the streets of Bobcaygeon July 5 to commemorate the victory of King William III (Prince of Orange) at the Battle of the Boyne. Spokesman Richard Lowey said the victory brought an end to the Glorious Revolution on July 12, 1690. He said that co-monarchs King William and Queen Mary gave more power to the people as well as civil and religious liberties. Lowery said The Orange Order today protects and maintains the Protestant faith (religion) and are loyal to the Queen and country. He said that when the call came to defend our country during the worldwars,Orangemenwerethefirsttovolunteer. In Canada there are ladies lodges as well as children’s lodges. There are lodges in Bobcaygeon that meet at the Orange Hall in Settlers Village. The Orange Order is a worldwide organization whose motto is “equal rights to all and special privileges to none”.

CHAMBER CORNER Road closures in downtown Bobcaygeon have long been contentious, with the chamber of commerce positively addressing the issue by eliminating this element from its community events. However a resent approval by the city’s public works department will result in the July 5 closure of four major streets: Bolton, Need and parts of King and Canal. The applicant is the Orange Lodge of Bowmanville, which is resurrecting an annual parade that has been held for some years. Chamber president Susan Paradoski says the

problem, and reason for this report, is that the business community tends to blame the chamber for such “annoyances.” While we support any effort by any organizations to enhance the livability of our community, we hope organizers will seriously consider the effects on the business community.- Submitted by Bob Hughes on behalf of the Bobcagyeon Chamber of Commerce

It is the story of how two couples navigate their relationships as they celebrate their anniversaries on board a Caribbean cruise. The hilarious and heartfelt comedy will ring true with any couple who has ever contemplated sleeping in separate beds. This is the second play of the season for Globus stars Mark Whelan and Viviana Zarrillo (pictured) and is directed by Globus’ artistic producer James Barrett. The two actors play both couples as we see each pair navigate their marital issues. Some would recognize Whelan as the man in the Sleeman beer commercials. He has appeared at Globus before while Zarrillo is making her debut.Tickets for Separate Beds can be purchased by callingtheboxofficeat705-738-2037orinperson@ 2300 Pigeon Lake Rd., Bobcaygeon. The big bikeThe Heart and Stroke Foundation brought the Big Bike to Bobcaygeon for the first time ever on June 18. Five Bobcaygeon teams (the Bobcaygeon Kinette Club, the Bobcaygeon Lions Club, Buckeye Marine, Fenelon Falls Rotary Club and Kawartha Diary) raised more than $4,000 for the Foundation. Photo by Lisa Gervais.

KINETTE NEWSWe held our Cystic Fibrosis dinner at the May meeting and had as our guests our C.F. child and her

mom. Her mom is very knowledgeable and keeps us informed of the progress being made. Another welcome guest was our deputy governor to whom we presented our yearly C.F. cheque. C.F. is the priority project for Kin and we try to raise as much money as possible each year. Briefly,C.F.isthemostcommon,fatalgeneticdisease affecting Canadian children and young adults. There is no cure. In 1964, the life expectancy of a childwas four or five. Now,many are livinginto their 40’s but still half of the children in Canada with C.F. may never get to school. We know our donations make it possible to fund much more needed research. DG Wendy installed our newest member Chris Walker, welcoming her to the Bobcaygeon Club and the family of Kin. We all welcomed Chris, having a new member is great for the club and much needed. We are having our Trinkets, Treasures and Trash sale again this summer on Saturday, July 12 at 8 a.m. in the barn at Kinette Betty Anne’s at 1781 Cty. Rd.8, where it has always been held. Donations are welcome, including everything but clothes, until the end of June. Phone 705-738-3670 to make sure someone will be there to take your treasures. We sold all our Easter eggs and our food booth at the walleye tournament was successful so a big thank you to everyone. All proceeds from the garage sale go to Cystic Fibrosis, as did the profit from the tournamentbooth.Have a happy summer.- Kinette June

KInETTE DOnATIOnOn June 17, members of the Kinette Club of Bobcaygeon presented a cheque for $1000 to Karen Scott, development officer with the Ross Memorial Hospital Foundation. Scott said, “They’ve been so good to the hospital, giving more than $27,000 for the purchase of medical equipment and capital projects since 1996. They clearly care a great deal for high quality patient care.” The funds will be directed to the RMH emergency department, which sees more than 45,000 patient visits every year. Submitted

that Glenn and I were standing at the Land Registry Office in Lindsay. It was Friday, February 6, 2004. The purchase of Monk Family Funeral Services from the Monk family had just closed. We were handed the keys and alarm code to the funeral home.

Then Glenn and I looked backed and forth at each other. Embarrassed, we asked: “Can you give us directions to get to Bobcaygeon?” It wasn't that we didn't know how to get there, but we didn't know how to get there from where we were. The only landmark we knew in Lindsay was The Academy Theatre. Then, when we finally got to Bobcaygeon, we couldn't find the funeral home! We had forgotten about that quick turn from Highway 36 to Duke St. to Helen St. and had to ask a policeman how to find our new place.

While that memory is still vivid in our minds, ten years have flown by and it is time to make another change. We are going to retire, but will continue to live just outside of Bobcaygeon.

We are pleased to welcome Scott Davidson of Hendren Funeral Homes Lakefield and Norwood as the new owner of Monk Funeral Home. Scott is much younger than we are and has most of his career ahead of him. Scott is married to Rebekah, a photographer, and has three children: a daughter who just graduated from university and two sons who are still at home. We are confident that you will find Scott to be very friendly, generous and accommodating. He is a good listener and will devote as much time as needed to serve your family. Like us, he believes that every life represents a story to be told. Often a funeral service is the best way to do that. Scott has been very involved in the community of Lakefield and we anticipate he will do the same in Bobcaygeon. Please stop in to say hello to Scott over a cup of coffee. We do not turn our business over to Scott lightly. We have a deep ache in our hearts and tears are close to the surface. As a community, you have been so accepting of us. You have treated us like family. We will never forget that. We feel humbled that you chose us to care for your family.

We wish only the best for Scott and the community as you get to know each other. On the bright side, he knows how to find the funeral home on the first try.

Scott, welcome to Bobcaygeon!

Recently, organizers Greg Welton and Les Fowler presented the proceeds to Erin Coons, executive director of the RMH Foundation. The funds will be directed to “Operation: Exceptional Care”, which will help to purchase a new OR table, laparoscopic tools and gynecology scopes. Since 2003, the John Lindsay Memorial Golf Tournament has raised $24,036 to enhance patient care at the Ross.

GIVE BLOOD THIS SUMMER As a Mental Health Therapist at Ross Memorial Hospital, Malcolm MacFarlane impacts the health and safety of his clients every day. His commitment to save lives goes beyond his work at the hospital, however. MacFarlane has been giving blood since he was 17. His father was a blood donor; now his daughter is, too. “I’m told every donation saves three lives. When I make a donation, I always think that it could be the life of someone I love that I am saving,” said

It only takes an hour of my time every couple of months to be a regular donor, and this is a small investment of my time to save a life.” Blood donations typically slow during the summer months, but the demand for blood products remains constant. The hospital is encouraging employees, physicians, volunteers and their friends and families to give blood this summer. Other entertainment included the Caygeon Country Cloggers, wagon rides, musicians, WW1 talks and a petting zoo. Thank you to the Victoria County Historical Society for bringing their “WW1 On the Move” exhibit. Special thanks to the committee members and volunteers who made the day so successful. During the auxiliary’s annual general meeting June9,membersmadethefinalpaymentoneyearearly. “Every volunteer plays a role in the auxiliary’s mission to enhance patient care and raise funds for the hospital,” said president John Albin “so to present the final payment of ($225,000) itwasimportant that all volunteers take part.” The volunteers formed a line in the hospital cafeteria and passed a big cheque from volunteer to volunteer until it reached the front where foundation board chair Paul McPherson, board member Patricia Clarke, executive director Erin Coons, and RMH president & CEO Brian Payne were happy to receive it. “In 2010, our community had some of the longest MRI wait times in the province,” said Coons. “Now, thanks to the generosity of donors such as the Ross Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, we can meet our patient’s needs in a timely fashion right here at home. We’ve even been able to add services, such as Cardiac CT Angiography and MRI Breast Imaging. The members of the auxiliary are true champions of the Ross.” MRI is the gold standard tool for locating tumours and for diagnosing diseases and injuries in soft tissue. With applications in neurology, angiography, oncology, orthopedic, cardiac, breast, and pediatric imaging, MRI has a profound impact on local patients.

CANADA DAY BOBCAYGEON-STYLE

BOBCAYGEON - Long-time president Marg McLean may have retired but the Bobcaygeon Canada Day Committee is carrying on the tradition of one of the greatest celebrations in the City of Kawartha Lakes on Tuesday, July 1. Spokesman Bud McKean said the committee “does quite a job” of organizing the annual event – which marks 29 years in 2014. Festivities begin first thing in the morning with activities for thechildren and conclude some 12 hours later with an impressivefireworksdisplayattheBeachPark Bud said it could not happen without the generous support of the Bobcaygeon Royal Canadian Legion Branch 239, Bobcaygeon Legacy CHEST Fund, City of Kawartha Lakes, Heritage

Canada, local service groups, local businesses and residents. Theofficialopening takesplaceat10a.m. inTommy Anderson Park on Dunn Street. That will be followed by races, face-painting, fish pond, giantbubbles, hot dogs and beverages for the kids. Activities then shift to the Trent Severn Waterway Lock 32 park between 12:30 and 2:30 p.m. with balloon twisters, face-painters and rocket balloons. The birthday cake will also be cut and served at 12:30 p.m. The parade starts at 2:30 p.m., from Market Square on Main St. over the Lock 32 bridge, along Bolton Street, left on King Street to Need St. Children and adults are encouraged to enter decorated bicycles, cars and floats. And, remember that noparking is allowed during the parade. After the parade, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., the Odyssey Project will perform at the lock park. Then, a steak dinner is available at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 239 from 5 to 7 p.m. Music continues at theparkuntil thefireworksatBeachParkat10p.m. Organizers remind the general public that donations will be accepted all day and at the fireworks.

2 Sweet Chic’sSummer has arrived in Bobcaygeon and that means the Bobcaygeon Beach Park is again in full swing. Back by popular demand for a second year is 2 Sweet Chic’s: your food and drink provider for a trip to this picturesque part of town. The personable Tracy Baker is back at the helm with an expanded menu and new hours.“I love it. I’m a people person,” she says of the work on a beautiful weekday afternoon as several cus-

tomers come up to place their orders.Tracy com-ments that it is nice getting so many re-peat custom-ers already this year. She

gets a lot of locals and Sunday boaters plying the Trent-Severn Waterway. The new hours are Wednesday to Sunday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and the menu includes buffalo chicken wraps this year, along with her very popular pou-tine, hamburgers, hot dogs, French fries, combos and daily specials with all manner of non-alco-

holic drinks to wash it down. Tracy jokes that her motto is “a free kiss with every order” which means candy kisses.Tracy said she

is also looking for a reliable part-time helper. So, where is the other chic? Tracy explains that the name goes back a few years, when she and a business partner sold dollar-a-bag candy at fairs. She loves her new office space though. “Just the area, the park, Bobcaygeon. It’s a really nice area to live in.”

BECEL RIDE FOR HEART TORONTO: Kawartha Lakes Paramedic Service recently had a team enter the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s annual Ride for Heart fundraising event. The ride was a 75 km bicycle ride from the Canadian National Exhibition (CNE) grounds, along Lakeshore Rd., up to the Don Valley Parkway to the 401 and back to the CNE grounds. The goal was to raise $5,000 for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. One hundred per cent of the funds raised will come back to our municipality’s Public Access Defibrillation (PAD) program. Thepublic can still donate by going to this website: http://support.heartandstroke.ca/site/TR/Events/RFH2014?team_id=1485&pg=team&fr_ id=1040 The team would like to thank Mike Gorman from “Spokes for Folks” in Cambray for assisting again this year.

FINANCIAL CORNER QUESTION: I have been thinking about separation and divorce and am worried sick. What should I do?

RESPONSE: Given the current high rate of marriage breakdown you are not alone in feeling this way.

Oftenan individual’sfirststep is toconsultalawyer before understanding the different process optionsavailabletothem, onlytofindtheirchosenlawyer is not comfortable or trained in their

preferred process option. A great first step is to consult a financialprofessional trained in this area. They can’t give legal advice but can discuss the various process options including collaborative law as well as the majorfinancialissues(property, childandspousalsupport). Collaborative law is a relatively new approach that involves a team of the couple, their collaboratively trained lawyers and optionally family heath and financial professionals whosecosts can be shared. A lawyer can advise a client what they are entitled to, and a financial professional candemonstrate what it means to them for the rest of their lives. BEACH TESTING BEGINSKAWARTHA LAKES – The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit has kicked off its 2014 beach testing program. “It’s important to be beach smart by checking with the health unit on a regular basis to see if local beaches are safe for public use,” says Richard Ovcharovich, manager of environmental health with the HKPR District Health Unit. “Under certain circumstances, beaches can provide more than just fun and recreation. They may also pose a risk for swimmers.” Continuing until the end of August, health unit staff will take weekly water samples at 21 public beaches in Kawartha Lakes. The following locations will be tested:·Bexley Township Area: Blanchard’s Road Beach and Coboconk Lions Park Beach·Bobcaygeon Area: Beach Park and Riverview Beach Park·Carden Township Area: Carden Township Beach and Foxe’s Beach·Dalton Township Area: Dalton Township Beach·Eldon Township Area: Centennial Park East·Emily/Omemee Area: Omemee Beach·Fenelon Falls Area: Birch Point, Bond Street, Killarney Bay, and Sturgeon Point Beach·Laxton Township Area: Elliott Falls Beach, Head Lake and Norland Bathing Area·Mariposa Township Area: Sandbar Beach·Somerville Township Area: Burnt River Beach (Somerville) and Burnt River Four Mile Lake·Verulam Township Area: Centennial Beach (Verulam) and Verulam Recreational Park Beach test results will be available by late Thursday or early Friday each week through June, July and August. To access the results call your localhealthunitofficeorphonethetoll-freelineat1-866-888-4577; visit www.hkpr.on.ca and click

on the ‘Beach Test Results’ link - http://www.hkpr.on.ca/InfoSet/Environments/BeachWaterTesting.aspx Changes in water quality at local beaches can occur very rapidly and frequently. For that reason, Ovcharovich advises people to watch for other factors that could affect how safe it is for swimming. Bacterial counts in the water can increase due to heavy rain, high winds or wave activity and a large number of birds such as geese or seagulls nesting nearthebeach.Otherwarningsigns, likefloatingdebris, oil, discoloured water, bad odours and excessive weed growth, can also suggest the beach is unsafe to use, he adds.

CHORISTERS CORNERThe Choristers helped to Unlock the Summer by singing O Canada at the locks. Again it was a very cool morning but there was a good turn out. The choir is now taking a more relaxed schedule for the summer months but there is still work to be done in preparation for its concert in September. The Bobcaygeon Choristers now has an email address. Anyone wishing to contact the choir can use the following address. [email protected]

WHY BEING MAYOR ISN’T FOR ME

I have come to a humbling conclusion: being mayor isn’t for me…

It's for you, your family, and our Kawartha Lakes community, and it’s with the hope of being your mayor that I am running.

I planned on writing a press release about how I am going to be “A New Kind of Mayor” for this community. I planned on diving into the issues and addressing all of the major concerns that I know people have. I planned on rhyming off all of the buzz words that would get voter’s talking. I planned on listing off my resumé and showcasing my professional accomplishments as a leader. I planned on discussing my ideas for solutions and so on and so forth. I planned on showing you why I’m the perfect choice for mayor.

The truth is, “A New Kind of Mayor” wouldn't do that. They would do something fresh; something different; something unexpected even. You see, everything I wanted to do was just that: what I wanted to do. The thing is, the reasons I am running for mayor are not about me. They’re about you!

We will get to the issues and we will have serious discussions about the needed steps to strengthen our community, but first, you need to get to know me! You need to be able to have faith in me and trust that no matter what the issues may be, together with council, I will make the best choices and the most informed and responsible decisions for our community as a whole.

Being mayor is not a position of office, but a position of opportunity. A position for opportunity. I am putting everything I am into this responsibility. I am fuelled by my family, and the amazing passion, ideas, and vision of the people in our community. I am excited about what the coming months hold as I uncover the vibrant heartbeat of our city—you.

So, stand with me this municipal election. Make the decision to dedicate our city to a momentum of positivity and opportunity for all. We need to look at the strengths and amazing resources we have moving forward! The best things happen when we don’t pretend to have all the answers, but when we are united in finding the best solutions.

I’m going to be doing things in a way that is Positively Different. You can count on it.

If that’s something that is important to you and something you are looking for, come talk to me. Get to know me and how we can build a City of Kawartha Lakes that is Positively Different.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Andy Letham—Mayoral Candidate
