A Message from your PresidentOver the last several years, each Spring, as I’ve be-

gun planning my fruit, vegetable, and flower gardens, I often think of a poem that appeared in the September 2008 edition of The Pier. The “Junior League Garden” is an excellent piece that can be used to acknowledge this time of year when the League year has crossed over its half-way point, and as we’ve been moving full steam ahead our “leaves” might be starting to wilt! It is especially at this time that we may benefit from a few encouraging words to remind us why we do what we do, and to help renew our drive to press on in execut-ing our upcoming important and exciting events.

At this time I would like to thank a special group of ladies who have worked tirelessly, put-ting in extra hours learning new paradigms and principles regard-ing not only the mechanics of being a good leader and running a successful non-profit, but most importantly providing our valued members with an educational, fulfilling League experience. This group of ladies is our Board of Directors – Maureen Schraven, Nicole Buzzard, Nicole Caldwell, Patty Graziano, Holly Murphy, Sara Temple, Emily Wachter, and Kimberley Womack. I can’t thank you fine ladies enough for going the extra mile to keep our leaves green and strong!Sincerely Yours,

AndreaAndrea Simons-Snedden, JLE President, 2012-2013

Junior League GardenPlant three rows of Peas:

Patience.Promptness.Perseverance.

Then six rows of Lettuce:Let us be unselfish.Let us be loyal.Let us be faithful to duty.Let us be true to our obligations.Let us be open-minded.Let us care for one another.

Plant three rows of Squash:Squash gossip.Squash criticism.Squash indifference.

No garden is complete without Turnips:Turn up for meetings.Turn up for others in need.Turn up with a smile.Turn up to do your personal best.Turn up when.Turn up with a vision.Turn up with determination.

Congrats to Kathryn Proper!KATHryN ProPEr was awarded our Active of the Month for February! Kathryn has been working tirelessly to help chair the RAVE event. Holly also mentioned a possible outing for members in late March/early April to JL of Buffalo. Pres. Elect Maureen S. is a former member of the JL of Buffalo and they have a wonderful fundraising event that includes a tour of a beautiful estate, where

proceeds in the amount of nearly $250,000 go towards another deserving non-profit. This year, the Junior League of Buffalo has chosen the Knox Summer Estate as their 2013 Decorator’s Show House. The 14,400 square foot home has 26 rooms, or over 50spaces that will be decorated by profes-sionals in the Buffalo area. The Show House will be open for public viewing from 4/27-5/19, 2013. The JLE is hoping to make plans for a day trip to the Decorator’s Show House in East Aurora. Mondays allow for reserved private tours between the hours of 10am and 7pm (4/29 & 5/13) and 10am and 4pm (5/6). Admission is $15 and $25 for Monday tours. Past show houses net pro-ceeds exceeding $200,000 that allow non-profits to bid on, making compelling presentations that are put to a vote by the JLB general membership. Further information can be found at www.jlbuffalo.org. . Megan Howard announced the February GNO was a dinner and movie for Saturday, 2/23. Meet at TGIF for dinner then see “Safe Haven”. Megan Howard discussed how she has been working with JLE advisors for the March GMM, where the theme will be: Wine Women & Webinars! It will be a chance for membership to enjoy each others’ company and learn more about various training webinars that AJLI has to offer our members. Stations will be set up at March GMM. New Member updates from Danielle included a wonderful organizing event the new members participated in at the Blasco Library. They met in January, went to Blasco, and helped organize the Reading Closet in the Children’s area. The Library was VERY thankful and may have more or-ganizing projects for us in the future. Kudos to our new members in reaching out to a past project!Holly mentioned the membership Satisfaction Survey from 2011-2012. She wanted the membership to know the BOD hears what the members have to say! The BOD has many great ideas and is currently developing plans to address your preferences and concerns. New Members are off to a Great Start! On Saturday, January 26th a few of the new members went to Blasco Library to complete their past project volunteer requirement. The Director of the Children’s Library, Sue Miceli, had the new members help to organize the stor-age rooms that housed the materials for story time. Sue was very happy to have them come and help out, and the ladies had a good time helping out as well. A big thank you to Christy Carucci for attending and helping out as well.
