The Joy of Caring
The past 18 months have been complex for the beauty industry. The COVID-19 pandemic created both challenges and opportunities; certainly, stressed consumers were turning to beauty to unwind. Yet meanwhile, they were also cutting back on luxuries. Therefore, products had to be pitched perfectly.
Subsequently, well-being has taken center stage. Consumers are prioritizing their mental health and the concept of “self-care” is an essential part of today’s Zeitgeist. Young consumers especially view their beauty routine as an opportunity for self-care which they can justify as an essential expense.
• 21% of adults who perform a beauty routine are interested in beauty products with psychological effects.

However, relaxation is only one way to support mental health. Others include fun, play, and adventure. Consumers often use beauty products to enhance confidence, express their personality, and experiment – particularly Gen Z, who are now less likely to be motivated by insecurities and more by a desire to convey their identity.
• 51% of women aged 18-24 say their typical makeup routine gives them joy, compared to 32% overall.
• 54% of adults who perform a beauty routine agree they have fun using beauty products.
• 30% of women aged 18-24 say their typical makeup routine expresses their personality.

Key formulation trends
Fun is sustainableThis “back to fun” attitude is also driven by a desire for simpler times. Consumers want new products and experiences that have associations with comfort, security, and positivity, say, a fond childhood memory. This is possibly why we’re seeing a lot of new product launches featuring pops of color, playful textures, and nostalgic designs.
However, this feel-good trend extends beyond the individual. Consumers want to feel cared for, but they want to care too: for the environment, communities, and each other. As a result, the demand for sustainable beauty has risen exponentially, with 58% of Gen Z consumers saying they always look for products that are environmentally friendly (Mintel, 2019).
To respond, brands should look to sustainable formats like waterless formulas, solid skin and hair care solutions, and zero-waste production practices.
However, in the context of the “back to fun” beauty trend, brands should see this as an opportunity rather than a challenge. Sustainable formats can be fun and playful, bringing a tactile, novel element to beauty routines.

Sustainable packaging conceptsA key part of creating a sustainable brand is the packaging – and beauty brands should use their presentation as a differentiator. For example, in Canada, 54% of adults think it’s important for their personal care products to be natural or organic (Mintel, 2020). With this focus on natural ingredients, brands can leverage the use of named plant materials in packaging to create a new level of differentiation.
This should extend to every aspect of the product, from brushes and sponges to boxes and tubes – all have sustainable alternatives. Using plant-based and/or recycled fibers for board cartons, paper packaging, or innovative new biodegradable jars, offers a key opportunity to frame waste-reuse actions in terms of measures that are important to consumers, such as water usage or carbon emissions.
• 83% of Malaysian adults would like to see more innovative sustainability ideas from big beauty brands.
• 58% of German adults think that eco-friendly packaging for beauty and grooming products should be plastic-free.

This isn’t to say sustainable means serious. In fact, brands can exploit these plant-based packaging concepts to connect with the “back to fun” trend. Materials like sugarcane and coconut have associations with candy, ice cream, and treats, which brands can leverage to create nostalgic, playful marketing angles.
The food concept has further potential for a playful twist on other sought-after sustainable formats. Solid shampoos and skincare products, for example, are easily paired with sweet tropical fragrances or innovative new shapes. Solid formats are easily styled like cakes or candy, perfectly harnessing the “back to fun” mood – take Provital’s new candy necklace formula or our lip sorbet.
Equally, for formulas that must be liquid, consumers are looking to reduce packaging volume. This accounts for the rising popularity of pouch formats, which use far less material per unit than a traditional bottle, whether it be from sustainable sources or not. There is also potential for nostalgic food links here, as squeezy pouches invoke fun, childhood playtime snacks.
In short, playful doesn’t have to mean plastic. There is a wealth of opportunities for brands to create fun, feel-good products that care for both consumers and the environment.
