CEDAR Coal FairThe Journey Of Coal
• Transportation is how coal gets delivered from the coal mines to the energy plants.
• There are few steps in the transportation of coal, and there are few machines you can use to transport coal.
• Without the transportation of coal to the power plants we couldn’t get the energy we need to function in our everyday lives.
Transportation
Coal starts out in the mines. After the mining process is complete, the coal is transferred to the modes of transportations, whatever it may be, by loadersloaders.
One of the main modes of the transportation of coal is coal truckscoal trucks. Coal trucks usually travel the highways to take the coal to its destination, power
plants. Coal trucks can also take coal to other modes of transportation. Sometimes these trucks travel great distances, even cross-country.
TrainsTrains are also loaded with coal at the coal plants or the coal is delivered to the trains. Trains complete the process by taking the coal delivered to the
power plants.
Coal can even travel on water! Trucks deliver coal to coal bargescoal barges. The barges deliver the coal to the power plants that are located overseas.
The Power PlantPower Plant, the final stop on the coal’s journey. The trucks, trains, and barges deliver their coal here. The power plant converts
the coal into useable energy so we can use it to turn on our lights and our heat.
