Dear Friends

In my ldquoFrom the Rectorrdquo articles I try to tackle difficult issues that we all face in life and apply the Scripture and the teachings of the church to them in order to give us strength and hope for the future In this article I want to talk to you about something that is important and vital to the strength and the future of St Matthewrsquos and Calvary Parishes Ministry

A minister is who we are in Godrsquos plan Ministry is what we do to share the love of God with others Christ called us to ministry The Holy Spirit empowers us for ministry The judgment Jesus described in Matthew 25 is based on how well we did our ministry Without ministry we donrsquot have a church and Godrsquos love goes unknown When we do not take our rightful place in ministry we let God down

There are many ways to express our ministry There are outreach ministries like the Mission Store There are teaching ministries like Christian Education There are service ministries like Eucharistic Visitor visiting the sick and those who can not attend church

There are worship ministries like Lay Reader Lay Preacher and Worship Leader There are ordained ministries like Deacon and Priest

St Matthewrsquos has been blessed with two wonderful deacons John and Cheryl have done much to keep the ministry of this church alive and well through visitation outreach worship preaching and teaching In truth John and Cheryl have gone well beyond the ministry of a Deacon in their work among us However John is now retired and Cheryl is looking toward taking more time in the future to travel with Todd for family and fun This is one of the reasons that St Matthewrsquos and Calvary will be experiencing more Morning Prayer this vacation season We should all be thinking about how ministry will continue in our parishes Without the support of committed people willing to take a place and share in the ministry of the church lay and ordained the future of our parishes and our ministries is in doubt Ministry is our next big step forward

I am asking all members of St Matthewrsquos to consider what they may have been hearing God call them to do and become in ministry Have you been feeling a call to ordained ministry To a ministry of visitation To an outreach ministry If so consider it deeply prayerfully and seriously Read my note on the Shared Ministry Program come and visit with me about your call

I know God is calling That is what God does Are we listening

+Fr Don

We have been given a wonderful

opportunity for growing and

developing our gifts for ministry It is

called the Shared Ministry Program

And what is great is that we donrsquot

have to drive to Omaha or Kearney

or North Platte to be part of it St

Matthewrsquos has been designated a

model parish and the program will

be taught right here in our

undercroft on the third Saturdays of

SEPTEMBER OCTOBER AND NOVEMBER OF

2011 AND JANUARY THROUGH APRIL OF

2012

Why is this a great opportunity for us

FIRST as I have been preaching and

teaching for the past few years and

as the catechism states following

Christ requires us to share our gifts

with others and to take our place as

ministers in the church (BCP page

855)

Q Who are the ministers of the

Church

A The ministers of the Church are lay

persons bishops priests and

deacons

Q What is the ministry of the laity

A The ministry of lay persons is to

represent Christ and his Church to

bear witness to him wherever they

may be and according to the gifts

given them to carry on Christrsquos work

of reconciliation in the world and to

take their place in the life worship

and governance of the Church

SECOND sharing our gifts and

ministering in his name is what Jesus

called us to do and he sent us the

Holy Spirit to empower us for ministry

St Paul calls us the ldquoambassadors of

Christ a royal priesthood a kingdom

of priests to serve our Godrdquo Sharing

our gifts with others and taking our

place as ministers of the church is

Biblical

THIRD it will be a wonderful

opportunity to increase our

knowledge of the church and its

varied ministries I have had many

people in St Matthewrsquos and Calvary

tell me I wish I knew more about the

Bible Church History the Prayer

Book our worship etc This is your

chance to learn all these things and

more

By offering to God and the church

seven (7) Saturdays from September

to April you can participate in

classes on Church History The Prayer

Book The Constitution and Canons

Scripture creating a healthy church

environment and preaching

This is an incredible opportunity and

it is free Honestly it would a tragedy

if we let this opportunity pass without

taking full advantage of it

SCOTT BARKER is scheduled for 100

PM on Saturday October 8 at the

Embassy Suites Omaha-LaVista Hotel

Conference Center

Where to begin For me our Mission

Trip with On Eagles Wings was an

experience of learning growing

and questioning in addition to an

adventure that I relate to the

ldquoAmazing Racerdquo and ldquoSurvivorrdquo

My first experience of ldquoSurvivorrdquo was

the flight from Scottsbluff to Denver

It was a tad bit bumpy (okay a

whole lot bumpy) I had taken the

combination of over-the-counter

medicines that I found to work for

me for motion sickness but this

combination was not enough for this

flight I was praying for a smooth

flight and a safe landing and

wondering what the rest of our

mission trip was going to be like if it

was starting out like this and also

thinking if I survive this flight ndash on the

return we are renting a car and

driving from Denver to Alliance

Fast forward to Bible School The

theme was SPLASH ndash Show People

Love and Share Happiness I was

definitely stepping out of my comfort

zone ndash outside of the US in a

community and around people that

are different from what I know and

helping teach Bible school What

had I gotten myself into I felt

comfortable to some extent

- 7 -

because I was with Don and knew I

could and would be relying on him

for his knowledge sense of humor

along with his caring and loving

attitude

Bible school was similar to our flight

from Scottsbluff to Denver ndash ups

(getting to know children seeing

their creativity laughter learning

new words children being at Bible

school at least 30 minutes early ndash

waiting for us to arrive so Bible school

could start) and downs (witnessing

hunger frustration anger sadness --

not at Don but at situations that

arose) and learning to let go I am

still processing some of the

experiences and trying to listen to

what God is telling me In the near

future Don and I will be hosting a

presentation (with photos and

discussion) of our mission trip with On

Eagles Wings

The one thing that I am sure about is

that if we believe we should be

sharing Jesus with others

There are worship ministries like Lay Reader Lay Preacher and Worship Leader There are ordained ministries like Deacon and Priest

I know God is calling That is what God does Are we listening

We have been given a wonderful

opportunity for growing and

developing our gifts for ministry It is

called the Shared Ministry Program

And what is great is that we donrsquot

have to drive to Omaha or Kearney

or North Platte to be part of it St

Matthewrsquos has been designated a

model parish and the program will

be taught right here in our

undercroft on the third Saturdays of

SEPTEMBER OCTOBER AND NOVEMBER OF

2011 AND JANUARY THROUGH APRIL OF

2012

Why is this a great opportunity for us

FIRST as I have been preaching and

teaching for the past few years and

as the catechism states following

Christ requires us to share our gifts

with others and to take our place as

ministers in the church (BCP page

855)

Q Who are the ministers of the

Church

A The ministers of the Church are lay

persons bishops priests and

deacons

Q What is the ministry of the laity

A The ministry of lay persons is to

represent Christ and his Church to

bear witness to him wherever they

may be and according to the gifts

given them to carry on Christrsquos work

of reconciliation in the world and to

take their place in the life worship

and governance of the Church

SECOND sharing our gifts and

ministering in his name is what Jesus

called us to do and he sent us the

Holy Spirit to empower us for ministry

St Paul calls us the ldquoambassadors of

our gifts with others and taking our

Biblical

THIRD it will be a wonderful

opportunity to increase our

knowledge of the church and its

varied ministries I have had many

people in St Matthewrsquos and Calvary

tell me I wish I knew more about the

Bible Church History the Prayer

Book our worship etc This is your

chance to learn all these things and

more

By offering to God and the church

seven (7) Saturdays from September

to April you can participate in

classes on Church History The Prayer

Book The Constitution and Canons

Scripture creating a healthy church

environment and preaching

This is an incredible opportunity and

it is free Honestly it would a tragedy

if we let this opportunity pass without

taking full advantage of it

- 3 -

+Fr Don

- 4 -

We have been given a wonderful

opportunity for growing and

developing our gifts for ministry It is

called the Shared Ministry Program

And what is great is that we donrsquot

have to drive to Omaha or Kearney

or North Platte to be part of it St

Matthewrsquos has been designated a

model parish and the program will

be taught right here in our

undercroft on the third Saturdays of

SEPTEMBER OCTOBER AND NOVEMBER OF

2011 AND JANUARY THROUGH APRIL OF

2012

Why is this a great opportunity for us

FIRST as I have been preaching and

teaching for the past few years and

as the catechism states following

Christ requires us to share our gifts

with others and to take our place as

ministers in the church (BCP page

855)

Q Who are the ministers of the

Church

A The ministers of the Church are lay

persons bishops priests and

deacons

Q What is the ministry of the laity

A The ministry of lay persons is to

represent Christ and his Church to

bear witness to him wherever they

may be and according to the gifts

given them to carry on Christrsquos work

of reconciliation in the world and to

take their place in the life worship

and governance of the Church

SECOND sharing our gifts and

ministering in his name is what Jesus

called us to do and he sent us the

Holy Spirit to empower us for ministry

St Paul calls us the ldquoambassadors of

Christ a royal priesthood a kingdom

of priests to serve our Godrdquo Sharing

our gifts with others and taking our

place as ministers of the church is

Biblical

THIRD it will be a wonderful

opportunity to increase our

knowledge of the church and its

varied ministries I have had many

people in St Matthewrsquos and Calvary

tell me I wish I knew more about the

Bible Church History the Prayer

Book our worship etc This is your

chance to learn all these things and

more

By offering to God and the church

seven (7) Saturdays from September

to April you can participate in

classes on Church History The Prayer

Book The Constitution and Canons

Scripture creating a healthy church

environment and preaching

This is an incredible opportunity and

it is free Honestly it would a tragedy

if we let this opportunity pass without

taking full advantage of it

Where to begin For me our Mission

Trip with On Eagles Wings was an

experience of learning growing

and questioning in addition to an

adventure that I relate to the

ldquoAmazing Racerdquo and ldquoSurvivorrdquo

My first experience of ldquoSurvivorrdquo was

the flight from Scottsbluff to Denver

It was a tad bit bumpy (okay a

whole lot bumpy) I had taken the

combination of over-the-counter

medicines that I found to work for

me for motion sickness but this

combination was not enough for this

flight I was praying for a smooth

flight and a safe landing and

wondering what the rest of our

mission trip was going to be like if it

was starting out like this and also

thinking if I survive this flight ndash on the

return we are renting a car and

driving from Denver to Alliance

Fast forward to Bible School The

theme was SPLASH ndash Show People

Love and Share Happiness I was

definitely stepping out of my comfort

zone ndash outside of the US in a

community and around people that

are different from what I know and

helping teach Bible school What

had I gotten myself into I felt

comfortable to some extent

- 7 -

because I was with Don and knew I

could and would be relying on him

for his knowledge sense of humor

along with his caring and loving

attitude

Bible school was similar to our flight

from Scottsbluff to Denver ndash ups

(getting to know children seeing

their creativity laughter learning

new words children being at Bible

school at least 30 minutes early ndash

waiting for us to arrive so Bible school

could start) and downs (witnessing

hunger frustration anger sadness --

not at Don but at situations that

arose) and learning to let go I am

still processing some of the

experiences and trying to listen to

what God is telling me In the near

future Don and I will be hosting a

presentation (with photos and

discussion) of our mission trip with On

Eagles Wings

The one thing that I am sure about is

that if we believe we should be

sharing Jesus with others

CONSECRATION OF BISHOP ELECT J

SCOTT BARKER is scheduled for 100

PM on Saturday October 8 at the

Embassy Suites Omaha-LaVista Hotel

Conference Center

Where to begin For me our Mission

Trip with On Eagles Wings was an

experience of learning growing

and questioning in addition to an

adventure that I relate to the

ldquoAmazing Racerdquo and ldquoSurvivorrdquo

My first experience of ldquoSurvivorrdquo was

the flight from Scottsbluff to Denver

It was a tad bit bumpy (okay a

whole lot bumpy) I had taken the

combination of over-the-counter

medicines that I found to work for

me for motion sickness but this

combination was not enough for this

flight I was praying for a smooth

flight and a safe landing and

wondering what the rest of our

mission trip was going to be like if it

was starting out like this and also

thinking if I survive this flight ndash on the

return we are renting a car and

driving from Denver to Alliance

Fast forward to Bible School The

theme was SPLASH ndash Show People

Love and Share Happiness I was

definitely stepping out of my comfort

zone ndash outside of the US in a

community and around people that

are different from what I know and

helping teach Bible school What

had I gotten myself into I felt

comfortable to some extent

- 7 -

because I was with Don and knew I

could and would be relying on him

for his knowledge sense of humor

along with his caring and loving

attitude

Bible school was similar to our flight

from Scottsbluff to Denver ndash ups

(getting to know children seeing

their creativity laughter learning

new words children being at Bible

school at least 30 minutes early ndash

waiting for us to arrive so Bible school

could start) and downs (witnessing

hunger frustration anger sadness --

not at Don but at situations that

arose) and learning to let go I am

still processing some of the

experiences and trying to listen to

what God is telling me In the near

future Don and I will be hosting a

presentation (with photos and

discussion) of our mission trip with On

Eagles Wings

The one thing that I am sure about is

that if we believe we should be

sharing Jesus with others

your community is to reduce the amount of landscaping

required to maintain your yard

Try Xeriscaping You may even save yourself some time

and effort by using native plants that require less

maintenance Xeriscaping is a way to garden using a

minimum of water and energy The following techniques

are a must in dry weather climes but also provide useful

guidelines for environmentally conscious gardeners

everywhere

o Group plants by their water needs When possible

put high-need plants in naturally wetter areas of

your property

o Test your soil Add organic matter when necessary

ndash maybe from your own compost pile ndash to increase

your soilrsquos water-holding capacity

o Mulch Cover plant beds with composted leaves

or grass to help retain moisture

o Plant native species Plants that have evolved in

your arearsquos climate are more naturally adapted to
