“Making Do”
It has been about a year and a half ago now, when our son-in-law joined his father and a
friend for a 40 mile hike on the Appalachian Trail. He had planned carefully and had spent
many hours on trails around his home in order to get his body “in shape” for the arduous four
days that he and his companions would be “in the woods.” He practiced with the forty
pounds of weight he would be carrying and finally was confident that he was “ready.” The
plan was to drive to Boone where they would meet and then drive the next day to a
rendezvous point where they would leave their car and then be shuttled to the point of
beginning. They would then hike back to the car.
A few days before the trip, his wife had asked if he was sure he would not need to purchase a
new pair of boots, as his boots were looking pretty worn and old. Paul assured her the boots
were fine and a new pair of boots would more than likely be uncomfortable since it was too
late to get them “broken in.”
On the very first day of the hike, catastrophe happened! The entire bottoms of the boots came
loose from the “uppers.” There was initial worrying and the “doomsday” declaration that “the
hike would have to be abandoned,” since they were so far into the woods with no way to get
to another pair of boots. However, “to abandon” was not on the radar of our son-in-law. He
had spent too much time and energy planning for the trip and was looking forward to this
good time with his father and his good friend. There had to be another way.
Our daughter had posted on her face book page a line from somewhere she had found,
“Angels talk to men when they are in the woods.” She shared this with him when he returned
and “knowing” surprise was immediately registered on his face. His testimony regarding her
explanation was that when he lay down for sleep that night, he prayed about his situation:
“God I need revelation from you about how to fix the boots for the rest of the trip. You know
how much I have looked forward to this time with Dad and that we both need this time
together so very much, so please direct me to a workable solution.” When he closed his eyes
to sleep, he “heard” a voice that said, “Don’t worry about it you will find a way in the
morning.”
When he awakened, he proceeded to use all the duct tape he had carried and all of the rope he
had packed in anticipation of lesser repairs, but “fixed” the boots so that they, indeed, lasted
the rest of the trip. Much energy was expended each evening to get the boots off and each
morning to get the boots on and fastened for the day, but the trip was completed with his
“making do” boots. There were no blisters and no unusual pain in the feet and legs.
From the desk of Rev. Jeff G. Roberts (Continued)
As I reflect on this story, I am drawn to another description of Interim Ministry. It is, to be sure, a
“making-do” time for the church, seeking to mend brokenness and pain while helping the church con-
tinue to be the church until the “new boots” of the next pastor can be discovered and he can be called!
It continues to be a joy for me to work with this fine and dedicated staff and for Beanie and me to con-
tinue our quest to get to know all of you. Thank you for being patient with us! There may be those who
feel that it is better to abandon the hike and miss the grandeur of sharing this exciting and hopeful time in
the life of the church. The “boots” may seem to be “beyond repair,” but the voice of God’s messenger
can still be heard and the faithfulness of his people working together can complete the “hike” to the glory
of God. Beanie and I anticipate completing the hike with you. Who will be faithful with us?
OPERATION INASMUCH 2013 Operation Inasmuch is quickly approaching. Have you or your small group decided how you will be
the hands and feet of Jesus during this focus on outreach in our community? Opportunities are all
around us as we look toward the week of April 28-May 4. Our goal is to have everyone involved in an
OIAM project whether it is cleanup, cooking, sewing, construction, flower/garden planting, crafting,
card/letter writing, singing, visiting shut-ins, sorting donated items, or praying. There will be something
for everyone, and time for all to participate. The Missions and Outreach Team appreciates the ideas that
have already been suggested and welcome additional activities. The big white board will soon be in the
hallway outside the Bullock-Matthews room for project listing. Below are just a few of the groups that
would welcome your time and talents. Please continue to be in prayer for this special time of ministry as
we look for ways that we may serve others in our community.

According to RW...
Our mission statement is to Embody the Presence of Christ to Sanford and the World. Overall,
I think we do a pretty good job of it, both through the support of local and international mission efforts,
and by actually being the hands and feet of Christ all around us. This month, I wanted to take this
space to tell you a couple of ways you can support those who are being those hands and feet this
summer, along with a way you can help meet the needs of those within our community.
Recently, you may have walked down the main hallway at the church and noticed that there are
a lot of envelopes pasted all over the Family Ministry Bulletin Board. Well… there were 200 on there
to be exact. The reason that they are there is because it is a part of raising funds for our High School
and College Mission Trip to Belize this Summer.
Currently, we have ten people signed up to travel to Belize City to lead Vacation Bible School
for Fabers Road Baptist Church and working with their pastor, Antolino Flores. We need help to cover
the cost of the flight, our ground transportation, hotel accommodations and food. Our estimated cost
for this trip for ten people will be approximately $11,000. So… here’s what we are asking you to do.
On the Family Ministry Bulletin Board are 200 envelopes, each with a dollar amount from
$1.00 to $200.00 on the outside.
1. Go and take an envelope off the board.
2. Place the amount of money listed inside the envelope (cash or check to JHBC).
3. Put the envelope in the gray box on the bottom left hand corner of the Family
Ministry Bulletin Board.
On April 21, we will be celebrating Youth Sunday at JHBC. Our youth will be leading worship
in both worship services that morning. Following the worship service, we will have a fundraiser lunch
for our Passport trip to Wingate for middle school and high school students. Later that afternoon, our
youth will be going bowling.
I hope you will take an envelope from the board, come to lunch on April 21, and give
generously to help support our youth mission efforts this summer.
Finally, in your bulletin over the past few weeks, we have been asking for contributions to our
Benevolence Fund. The money that is donated goes to help meet the needs of people in our
community based on a process approved by the Deacons and maintained by the ministerial staff. We
thank those of you who have donated toward the fund, and wanted to let all of you know that we can
still use your help.
Recently, I remembered something that my parents’ church did on Sundays when we celebrated
communion. Following the partaking of communion, ushers would be available at the exits for you to
donate to the Benevolence Fund. I ran the idea past the Deacons and they approved it.
On Sunday April 7, we will celebrate communion during both worship services. At the end of
the service, our ushers will be at the exits for you to donate money toward our Benevolence Fund.
Through all of your gifts, I hope that you will keep in mind that you yourself are on mission,
either in your workplace, school, and even dining out and shopping. Wherever you go and whatever
you do, may you always be the witness of the resurrected Lord Jesus Christ.
Blessings,
Rich

WORDS OF THANKSGIVING Several of the members of the Youth Ensemble led us in a different style of worship at our Palm Sunday 11 AM morning worship service. The worship interpretation of “Arise, My Love”. I am so very proud of them and for the way they worked hard, not only at the church rehearsals, but took it upon themselves to rehearse at home on their own. This shows their real commitment. The Youth Ensemble also joined with the Sanctuary Choir at the 11:00 AM worship service on Palm Sunday to sing “Revelation Song”. Again, showing their total commitment and sacrifice. Thanks again Youth.
WORSHIP SUMMIT If you were unable to attend any or all of the Worship Summits led by Kenny Lamm, please go online to www.RenewingWorshipNC.org and you can read a wonderful sum-mary of the Summit meetings. I hope those that attended were enlightened, educated and excited about all the possibilities of worship. We all worship in so many different ways and we all experience the presence of the Holy Spirit differently, too. All of our spiritual journeys, which include worship, are different. We are all God’s children and He, the Creator, has created each as His own masterpiece and we are all different. Just like a potter, each piece is unique and not all just alike. Therefore, if you have any questions or comments, please write them down and submit them to any of the church staff, Kenny Lamm, or myself.

HIGHER HEIGHTS
NEWS
Seniors of Higher Heights celebrated February by recognizing that February is known as the Love and Heart month. A devotion on “Completed Love” was given by Armelia Garren. A presentation “Receiving and Living with a New Heart” was given by Ernest “Ernie” Gaster. Ernie related the trials and blessing that he and Pat received during the years preceding and following his heart transplant. After the program, 24 Seniors enjoyed a bountiful array of refreshments. Thanks to the ladies for providing the refreshments. Our March meeting was a day outing with 10 Seniors having lunch at Bay Breeze Restaurant and then a trip to J. R. Moore Hardware Company. We enjoyed seeing the numerous items on display and reminiscing of “old times.”

CITY ON A HILL NEWS
Greetings from the ever warming hills of India. The past month has been filled with time spent with students teaching about the Word of the Lord both in and outside the classroom. We are blessed to be spending time encouraging the faith development of others. At the beginning of March, Heather helped with a retreat for grades 3 and 4 students. The retreat theme was based on The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe by C. S. Lewis. The students learned the Bible teaches that a changed heart and life are possible. Heather led a study on what it means to put on the “Armor of God.” The students loved seeing ordinary household items being used to dress up one of the girls as God’s warrior ready to fight against evil. Later in March, David participated in a retreat for grades 9 to 12 students. They enjoyed spending time away from school to reflect on being “Known by God.” Examining how one can experience grace if they are in a relationship with God was a theme of the retreat. At the end of March, the school held an Easter Chapel service. This was a great opportunity to share the Resurrection story with the whole school community. We both were involved in helping to organize the service since the school is without a Chaplain. Heather’s elementary choir opened the service with a processional song. Some of David’s classes acted out the Easter story as scripture and narration were read. The service told the story of the triumphal entry of Jesus, the pain of betrayal and finished with the good news that “He is not here!” This indeed was a high and holy day as the Hallelujah Chorus ended the service. Prayer Points:
Our home fellowship group The staff and students of the school Our advisor “youth group” that they will continue to seek the Lord when things go wrong The ministry teams of the school, that they will be able to meet the needs of the community in the absence of a Chaplain. The students who attended retreats and all those at the Easter Chapel that the words they heard may be seeds planted for God to grow.
DEACON’S CORNER….. Submitted by Mary Upchurch, Chair, Fellowship of Deacons
“5The angel said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for
Jesus, who was crucified. 6He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see
the place where he lay. 7Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the
dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have
told you.” Matthew 28:5-7. Thank you, God, for your Son,
Jesus Christ.
The Equipping for the Future Task Force has been busily at work researching, studying, and
determining which projects to place in short term and long term. Chairman Randy Angel states
the first stage of their task has been completed and prices are currently being obtained. He hopes
to have a complete report to present to the Church in the near future.
Jesus My Shepherd Hispanic Church is scheduled for a six month review in April. Discussion
between the pastor and our staff reveal the Church is growing in attendees. Your Deacons are
actively praying and searching for ways we can become better partners with them. We are in the
process of planning a meeting with their church leaders, an interpreter, our staff and Deacons.
This will give them an opportunity to ask us questions and have answers interpreted; and also,
give our staff and Deacons an opportunity to ask them questions and receive answers through an
interpreter. This working relationship should provide a better understanding as we continue
looking at the Covenant between Jonesboro Heights Baptist Church and Jesus My Shepherd
Hispanic Church. Please join us in prayer as we seek God’s will and direction in this mission
endeavor.
It was determined that there are funds available in the Wornom Scholarship Fund for distribution
this year. An ad hoc Scholarship Committee was selected as follows: James Mitchell, Kathy
Waters, and Sam Carter.
JHBC Church Business Meeting was held on Sunday Evening, March 3, 2013. More Chairs of
teams/committees reported than had reported at any meeting this church year. Reverend Roberts
attended the business meeting and expressed positive comments on the way committees/teams
reported and encouraged us to continue moving forward.
The next Church Business Meeting is scheduled for Sunday Evening, May 5, 2013. Mark your
calendar now and plan to attend the business meeting and learn what the teams/committees are
doing and how you may participate.
The next Deacons’ Meeting is scheduled for Monday Evening, April 1, 2013. If you have
questions or suggestions for the Deacons, please advise one of the Deacons or write to us.
The Annual Business Meeting of Jonesboro Heights Baptist Church is scheduled for Sunday,
July 21, 2013, following the 11 A.M. Worship Hour. The 2013-2014 Church Budget and
Nominating Committee Reports will be presented, and three of the five deacon nominees will be
elected to serve three year terms. Please plan to attend and mark your calendar now.
Dear Friends,
Hard work always comes before the reward,

MISSIONS AND OUTREACH
COMMITTEE
The Missions and Outreach Committee
would like to thank JHBC for their
outstanding support of the Easter Hope
Shoebox Project. We were able to meet
and exceed our goal of 150 shoeboxes by 6. Because
you gave so generously, we packed 156 shoeboxes! It
was a group effort. Thank you to all who gave money,
shopped for shoebox items, donated items, bagged
candy, made shoebox labels, brought shoeboxes,
wrapped and decorated shoeboxes, set up and got us
ready to pack shoeboxes. A “special thank you” to
Kelley Desjarlais’ fifth grade class at Lee Christian
School who also packed shoeboxes for this ministry
effort. Now, just continue to pray for the mission
teams that will take the shoeboxes and for the
underprivileged children in Kentucky who receive the
shoeboxes. May they be blessed and may our efforts
bring honor and glory to the Lord we serve.
