Following the Star

Many people make New Year resolutions. All you will have to do after
Christmas is to walk down the store aisles to recognize that retailers ex-
pect many people to get their act together – to organize their ‘stuff’, and to
get themselves in shape as well.
Why are resolutions so hard to keep? So hard, that many people have just
given up on the whole entire thing. Maybe you have as well.
This New Year, I have decided rather than making resolutions, I want to
commit myself to a New Year’s renewal. I want to join the shepherd boy
who became a king, David, in this prayer he prayed centuries ago: “Create
in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.
Cast me not away from your presence, and take not your Holy Spirit from me. Restore unto me the joy of your salvation...” Psalm 51:1-12
David also prayed, “One thing I ask, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in
the House of the Lord all the days or my life… My heart says of you, ‘Seek his face!’” Psalm 27:4,8
The one thing I want and need is a right spirit – a right relationship with my God through Jesus Christ which
translates into a right relationship with others. I need and desire to seek God’s face every day so that I may
live more like Jesus; so that I can truly love God with all my heart, mind, soul and strength and to love my
neighbor as myself.
I want to follow the example of Mary, the sister of Martha, when Jesus visited their home. She set aside her
kitchen work to sit at Jesus’ feet and listen to him. In this regard, Jesus said these words to her anxious sis-
ter, “Martha, Martha, you are worried, and distracted by many things; there is need of only one thing. Mary
has chosen the better part, which will not be taken away from her. There are many things that can be worried
about, but only one thing is needed – it is the best thing – and Mary has chosen it!” Luke 10:41-42
I also want to keep in mind the apostle Paul. He counted his many accomplishments as nothing compared to
the ‘surpassing greatness of knowing Christ.” (Philippians 3:8) He expressed his life ambition, by saying,
“One thing I do: forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to
win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:13-14
Please join me in my New Year’s commitment to draw ever nearer to Jesus as I offer this prayer:
Dear God, thank you that you make all things new. Thank you for all that you've allowed into our lives this
past year, the good along with the hard things, which have reminded us how much we need you and rely on
your presence filling us every single day. We pray for your Spirit to lead us each step of this New Year. We
ask that you will guide our decisions and turn our hearts to more deeply desire you above all else. May our
spirits be renewed every day of the New Year by your love, mercy and grace. May we willingly and eagerly
share this love, mercy and grace with others. We offer this prayer in Jesus’ name. Amen.
Peace and Blessings, Marla

ONE person can make all the difference in the world for ONE other person.
The idea is simple: ONE person. ONE item. ONE life made better. This ministry in-
vites every person to get involved. Here's how it works. We designate one shopping
item for every month of the year to help fill the shelves of the Castine Food Bank.
Please prayerfully consider giving to this ministry each month.

Pastor Qualls and everyone at St. Matthew’s: “Thank you for your support of our youth! Merry Christmas” -Pastor Cliff Nunn, Wernle
“To our brothers and sisters at St. Matthew: Thank you so much for allowing us to give your set of chimes a new home. We hope to have them installed early next year and are excited about the many possibilities for their use. It was a “God-wink” for us, as we had in-tended to purchase a new set, but had to use that money for organ repairs. So you can imagine how happy we were to find yours available. We pray you have a wonderful Christmas in your beautiful little county church, and know that we pray for God to be present as you continue in your ministry.” God’s Blessings, —Laura Rocklin, music director; Fr. We are all 2018 today. Today the whole world is the same age. Today is a very special day. It happens only once every 1,000 years Your age + your year of birth = 2018. This is true for everyone. It is strange and inexplicable. Try it and see. It will not happen again for an-other 1,000 years. So….. HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

GRACE NEWS
Minutes for Administration Council December 16, 2018 Attendees: Amanda Baker, Charlotte Mitchell, Pastor Chris Stump, Roger Niswonger, Marsha Branham, Jim Longenecker, Pastor Travis Qualls, Ron Hoover, Pastor Marla Brown, Doug and Wendy Thompson. Financial Report: Amanda Baker handed out the November finance report. Everything is fine. Trustees: Roger Niswonger asked the Council about putting in a handicapped door downstairs as well as the entrance doors upstairs. It was decided to price the downstairs door when they fix the upstairs doors. Depending on the cost, that will be decided at that time. The trustees are working on an estimate servicing the air conditioners. The cement wall in front of the church will be re-paired this spring. There is now a Church Use Policy. There is a $100 deposit for use of the up-stairs/sanctuary and a $100 deposit for use of the basement. The deposits will be returned if cer-tain conditions are met, such as cleaning the area used, no parking in the grass, and turning off the lights. There is an agreement to sign and the policy will be for all people who use the church. If the conditions are not met, the church will keep the deposit. The motion was made by Roger Nis-wonger and seconded by Marsh Branham. Motion passed unanimously. The Policy can be obtained by Nancy Baker, and the head of the trustees and chairperson of the Ad council will make the approval. Missions: Wendy Thompson reported they sent out 100 shoe boxes for Samaritan's Purse and all the money needed for shipping was received. SPRC: Doug Thompson stated that Heather Medve will take over as janitor in January 2019. She will clean the church twice a month and receive the same pay as Wendy Thompson did. Doug made the motion and Roger Niswonger seconded it. Motion passed. Pastors: Pastor Chris Stump invited everyone to the Gordon church services on Wednesday nights. Pastors Marla and Travis commented on how the youth enjoyed the services and how im-portant it is to build upon this ministry. Aidan Snyder is the grandson of the owner of Huston's Restaurant in Arcanum. He is a young boy with leukemia and is in the Children's Hospital in Texas. He has had this disease for several years. Our church partnership decided to adopt the family this holiday and take up a Miracle Offering for the family. A one-call will go out to announce this project. New Business: Pastor Travis wants a group council meeting with all 3 churches in February 2019. Recording Secretary, Charlotte Mitchell
