NEW YORK CITY IN THE GILDED AGE

Saturday, March 5, 2016

As private wealth continued to move ever further uptown in NYC, we can trace that process in the built environment: the parks and squares, the man-sions, hotels and the palatial public buildings that were all visual markers of the gilded age, and we can see this world reflected as well in the work of artists such as architects Stanford White and Henry Hardenburgh and many others.

It is both celebrated and critiqued in the fiction of Edith Wharton, and the complex ruminations of Henry James In the American Scene. But of course, there was also another New York, the world of the Lower East Side tene-ments teeming with new immigrants from Eastern and Southern Europe. A world revealed in Jacob Riis’s crusading expose How the Other Half Live, and in literature such as Abraham Cahan’s novella Yekl, source of the film Hester Street.

GeorGe Scheper (PhD., Princeton), former director of Odyssey, is senior lecturer in the Masters of Liberal Arts program at JHU, in which he regu-larly offers courses in the cultural history of New York City.

UNTANGLING THE WEB: WHY THE MIDDLE EAST

IS COMPLICATED AND ALWAYS HAS BEEN

Saturday, April 2, 2016

The Middle East has been a complexity of religious, political, ethnic and economic issues for the millennia. To fathom the difficulty of arriving at solutions to the many problems involving diverse groups across its breadth one must understand the interweave of these issues along with the length of the region’s history and explore — in and even-handed manner — how they have in turn been interwove with confusing definitions, conflicting aspirations and constant interferences. This talk will unravel some of the complexity of this web.

ori Z. SolTeS (PhD., Georgetown University). He is the author of scores of books and articles on diverse topics, including Untangling the Web: A Thinking Person’s Guide to Why the Middle East is a Mess and Always has Been.

PUTIN’S NEW GRAND DESIGN: RUSSIA’S UNCERTAIN FUTURE

AS A GREAT POWER

Saturday, May 7, 2016

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russia seemed at first to be on a path of westernization, democracy and private enterprise. However, since the rise of Vladimir Putin, Russia has re-emerged as a rival of the West with Great Power ambitions visible for example in the military intervention in Syria. Following the annexation of Crimea and the control of large swaths of the eastern Ukraine by rebels aligned with Russia, Putin’s national ambi-tions challenge Europe’s post-Cold War security system and pose a potential threat to Easter European countries seeking to join the E. U. His new Grand Design based on a strong state, a modernized military and emphasis on na-tional sovereignty and economic independence as the guiding principles of Russian actions in the international arena carries the great risk of under-mining the economic and political future of the country. The new Russian political and economic nationalism will not only lead to renewed tensions with the West. Russia’s future as a Great Power will also be at stake.

Please join Professor Dettke as he analyzes the recent behavior of Putin’s Russia and envisions what might happen next.

DieTer DeTTke, (PhD., Free University of Berlin), teaches at Georgetown University in both the Security Studies Program and the BMW Center for German and European Studies. He was formerly Executive Director of the Washington Office of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation.

sCOMFORT BY THE LADLEFUL

Winter has settled upon us once more and nothing says warmth andcomfort like a ladle full of stew. A stew is a combination of solid

food ingredients that have been cooked in a liquid resulting in a luscious velvety gravy. Stews are similar to soups but generally speaking, stews have less liquid and are much thicker and usually require a longer cooking time.

Stew is suitable for least expensive and least tender cuts of meat howev-er the reward is fantastic, delicious food. Meats become tender with slow, moist cooking. Water can be used but a fl avorful stock, along with beer or wine and spices and herbs result in extraordinary scrumptiousness. Stews may be thickened by reduction, fl our, potato starch, arrowroot or other thickening agents.

The history of stews goes back to 800 years before Christ was born. Tribes in South America would use shells of turtles as cooking vessels. Every culture on Earth can relate to the warmth, nourishment and comfort of a slow cooked stew.

Barbacoa from Mexico, Beef Stroganoff from Russia, Bo Kho from Vietnam, Bollito Misto from Italy, Cassoulet from France, Brunswick Stew from America, Daal from India, Goulash from Hungary, Hasenpfeffer from Germany, Lancashire Hotpot from England, Yahini, a Greek, Turkish and Persian stew and Irish Stew from Ireland. So this winter, put up a pot of that scrumptiousness and enjoy comfort by the ladle full! Peace,

Here’s a traditional Irish stew. No special recipe. Every home in Ireland mixes it up. Remember, keep it simple.

2 large onions

4 large carrots

1 – 2 lbs. lamb shoulder, 2 inch pieces

8 large potatoes

Salt and pepper

Fresh chopped herbs (optional)

Thyme and Parsley

Wash and cut onions, moderate size chunks. Wash and cut carrots, moderate size chunks. Wash and peel the spuds, cut each in half. Have the lamb shoulder cut into 2 inch pieces. Get a large enough pot and fill with water or chicken stock. Add potatoes and the lamb. Heat pot until the liquid boils, add carrots and onions. Turn down to a low simmer, stir occasionally until meat and vegetables are tender, approximately 1 – 1½ hours. Season to taste.

Serve hot with crusty brown bread and a pint of dark!

Two Sets: 8:30 – 9:30 and 10:00 – 11:00 pm

Forging a deeply personal sound from a broad swath of the jazz landscape, saxophonist, composer and arranger Tim Green has emerged as a pow-erful new voice, melding deftly swinging hard bop, fluid modernity and soulful gospel.

In recent years, Green has begun to mentor a younger generation in his na-tive city of Baltimore, serving as the saxophone professor at Morgan State University and teaching at his alma mater, the Baltimore School for the Arts.
