FROM THE DON’S DESK

Hello and as always, welcome to all of our new residents, staff, families and friends who are now a part of Jindalee Aged Care Facility.

As we can see the renovations and new construction is well under away. Please take a minute to look at the pictures in the Bush Lounge window. We cannot wait to avail a lovely outdoor sitting area and enjoy the products of our new cafeteria. It is all very exciting! If you have any queries about the builds Daniel Mafi, our Hotel Service Manager is available to discuss any questions you may have. Daniel is overseeing the works with the head builder, Russell Creed.

Congratulations to Rachel Matthews on her stunning wedding day! Rachel is one of our Endorsed Enrolled Nurses who is known to many throughout the facility. What beautiful photos of a stunning bride and groom!

It is with regret that I have to inform you that Raelene Price has resigned from her position as are receptionist. We welcome back Tracey Cowie to work in that role. Tracey was previously our receptionist some years back and later worked at Jindalee as part of the Health and Leisure team on Hoya. She says she misses the direct resident care however is very happy to be in our front office.

In addition we also welcome Monica Shaw to our

team. Monica is our new Payroll Officer and is in

the middle of learning the ropes.

We are very excited to announce that we are

embarking on a new resident care system called

Smartcare. The system will involve staff using a mobile device to refer to for resident care needs and will be used to record the care that is provided. It will replace most of our paper forms. An information pack and consent form has been sent out. If for some reason you did not receive one, please ask at reception.

The Australia Aged Care Quality Agency is the accreditation body for residential aged care homes. They check compliance with legislated accreditation standards. We are accredited until 11th May, 2019 and are expecting the Agency to visit any day now. We encourage you to approach their team or let management know if you would like to speak with any of the auditors, during their visiting time at Jindalee. Please be reassured that praise and/or concerns are kept confidential, if requested.

Goodbye to those terribly hot days of January and February and we will catch up again in a couple of months!

Welcome to another Jindajabber.

The first two months of the year have flown by!

We are enjoying beautiful Autumn days in Canberra with some regular walks and

time outside before the cold has us seeking the warmth of inside.

We have a trip to Bateman Bay planned for 20th March and encourage family

and friends to attend with their relatives. It is always a very special day for

anyone –the fish and chips are also delicious. For more details check page 16.

We are also going on a cruise of Lake Burley Griffin on 17th April. This will be a

great chance to see iconic Canberra landmarks from the water. Morning tea will

be served on the boat. Please come along. For more details check page 17.

You may have noticed that one of our Health and Leisure team is looking a little

different these days. Odile Muleka and her husband Roger will be

welcoming twin girls in June and we wish them all the best. We also have to say

goodbye to Tracey from the Health & Leisure team. She will not be

leaving Jindalee but taking a position in reception. Thank you Tracey for all your

wonderful work you have provided on H wing, you will be missed.

Belluci’s Italian Restaurant

Lunch Outing

On Wednesday 20th February a group of residents and staff ventured out to Belluci’s at Woden for lunch.

We had a number of popular dishes to choose from and the food and service was terrific.

Many residents commented on the wonderful atmosphere at the restaurant and have requested that we make a return visit later in the year.

MONTHS IN REVIEW

Australia Day High Tea

This year Jindalee celebrated Australia Day with a High Tea to beat all High Teas!

We ‘invited’ some special guests, such as The Queen, Russell Crowe, Pauline Hanson and Dame Edna to join in the fun.

The residents really enjoyed the afternoon tea with some great Australian classics as scones and lamingtons.

To finish off the afternoon we had a sing-a-long of some wonderful Australian songs.

St Andrews Church Tour

Residents were invited for a tour of St Andrews Church which is situated in Forrest We were given a full tour of the building, told the history of the church, an organ performance and shown the beautiful stain glass windows. At the end of the tour residents had the opportunity to ring the church bells. Many residents mentioned how much they enjoyed the day and found it very interesting.

Valentine’s Day Ball

It has long been a tradition of Jindalee to hold a ball for Valentine’s Day. This year we chose “Famous Couples from the 50’s and Beyond” as our theme.

We had lots of fun with the jukebox and karaoke machine having us all singing and dancing along to our favourite tunes.

The photos of this event really are a reflection of just how much fun we had on the day.

FIRE ALARMS

If the fire alarm goes off when you are in

the building, don’t panic!! Just wait for

guidance from senior staff.

There is a person in charge on every shift

who will know what to do and give

instructions.

Never put yourself in danger.

MEDICAL APPOINTMENTS

Due to the increasing number of external

appointments that residents are needing, we

ask that a relative or friend please accompany.

It is not always possible to take a staff member

off the floor.

LAUNDRY

Jindalee laundry staff label all new

clothing as they arrive to Jindalee. Any

new items need to go first to the laundry

before 3.00 pm, 7 days a week. Our

laundry staff will label them and then

redistribute them to the appropriate wings.

For all lost clothing items please see the

laundry staff for assistance.

CLOTHING

Residents & relatives are encouraged to provide

clothing that is suitable for commercial

washing machine. All reasonable care will be

taken. However Jindalee is unable to take

responsibility for damage to clothing that does

not comply e.g. woolens.

SCRABBLE MORNING

Residents & relatives are welcome to join a

Scrabble group every Tuesday 10:30am in H

wing lounge (TV Room)

LIBRARY SERVICE

We have a mobile library service that

delivers & picks up library books to

resident’s rooms. If you would like this

service, please talk to a Health & Leisure

staff member. They can sign you up for the

service.

HAIRDRESSER

We have a hairdresser who attends every Mon-

day & Tuesday. If you would like an

appointment please talk to reception or ask a

staff member to write in the hairdressers book

which is on every wing.

BEAUTICIAN SERVICES

We have a beautician who provides treatments

every Friday.

Please ask reception for a list of treatments and

prices.

ALCOHOL POLICY

Relatives are more than welcome to bring in

alcohol for their loved ones but it must be

handed to a senior member of staff to be

stored securely and safely monitored.

TAKING RESIDENTS

OUT OF BUILDING

If you are taking a resident out of the

building it is essential that the staff on the

wing are informed. It requires

documentation to communicate that

someone is away from the facility.

BUYING SOCKS

When buying socks for loved ones please

consider buying “diabetes friendly” or

“Bonds All Day” socks as these reduce the

problems of tight bands and pressure from

the seams.

RELATIVES DETAILS

EPOAs/Next of Kin or relevant persons please

alert staff if you;

change your address, phone number or contact

details.

We can then update your details.

NEWSPAPERS

If you would like a newspaper delivered to

your room please talk to reception about

which newspaper you would like and it will

be organized.

KNITTING GROUP

Every Tuesday afternoon at 2:00pm in G

wing lounge. Come and join our knitting

group. All residents & relatives welcome.

RELATIVE & CARERS COMMITTEE

The Relative & Carers Committee has been an

active group at Jindalee. It provides an avenue

for consultation between relatives, carers,

community and management. At present there

is not a functioning group however if there are

people that would like to start one up please

make an appointment with the Director of

Nursing.

PRAISE AND COMPLAINTS

BY

RESIDENTS OR THEIR RELATIVES

At Jindalee Aged Care Residence, we aim to provide the highest quality of care to our

residents. To assist us to continually improve our service, we welcome feedback and

suggestions for improvement from residents and their relatives. Suggestions are considered

by the staff at the Resident’s Care Committee Meeting where they are discussed. We

investigate all complaints and aim to resolve issues quickly and effectively.

Praise and concerns can be informal or formal, and anonymous if that is your desire.

Most issues can be dealt with informally. If you have an issue please ask to speak to the

person in charge of the wing. The issue may easily be dealt with in a simple conversation.

Jindalee has a Praise and Complaint Form that is available, providing a more formal method of

offering praise or concern. There is an option of remaining anonymous however it is difficult to

give feedback if we do not know who is raising the concern.

Once a Praise and Complaint Form has been completed, it can be handed to the nurse,

placed in the suggestion box in the foyer or posted to Jindalee.

The Director of Nursing (DON) or delegates review all the forms. They investigate the cause

of the concern, with a focus on whether Jindalee’s Policy and Procedures are contributing

factors and takes appropriate action to rectify any issues. Feedback is then available to the

complainant (if not anonymous).

All completed forms are kept in a folder in the Educator’s Office.
