Jim Thorpe Area Sports Hall of Fame 2013 Scholarship Winners

During the past five years, our “Football Mania" fund-raising ticket has been a huge success for our organization. During those years our membership has purchased 1100 tickets and we thank each of you for the support. This is a fund-raiser that our organization truly needed to assist us with our financial needs to continue donating to the many athletic organizations we help on a annual basis. The “Football Mania” tickets will be mailed out later in July, as we are hopeful that more of our mem-bership will participate with the NFL season starting in September. Previously, we have mailed these tickets out with our membership mailing, and we feel many of our members let this slide because of the early mail-ing date and as time goes by, the ticket is forgotten about. If you are a sports minded person, and enjoy football, this ticket will hold your interest for the 17 week season. Look for the “Football Mania” ticket in the mail later this summer!!!!! Last year, 2012, was our fifth year for this fundrais-ing ticket for our organization. We sent one ticket to all of our membership, and you purchased 210 tickets which was a very good return for us. We thank you! For us to continue what we have done (support our annual scholarship funds, donate to numerous youth athletic programs, pay for Hall of Fame plaques, and finance the annual induction banquet). We needed an annual fundraiser that is going to assist us with our financial needs. This year we pur-chased 500 FOOTBALL MANIA TICKETS, if you pur-chased a ticket from us in 2012, we will send you one in late July. Because we are a sports organization, the enclosed ticket should be something our members would have an interest in. It’s self explanatory and rather simple to follow. Once you return your ticket stub to us, we record all the ticket numbers into the computer and you can follow your progress weekly just by going online and using the website: (www.charity mania.com) at the bottom of your ticket. During the 2012 football season, we did have some winners: 1-$200 winner and 4-$50 winners. It’s all luck but keeps you very interested during the NFL SEASON. Football Mania is an exciting sweepstakes based on pro football with 6 prizes each week and 2 grand prizes at the end of the season. There are numerous organizations on a national level, and one locally, that use this fundraising ticket. Because of the other local organization that uses this

ticket, and because some of our members have previously purchased this ticket from them, we will not enclose a ticket for those members as we do not want to deter them from that organization. You are in no way obligated to purchase this ticket, however, we truly encourage it. Without our 1,000 members, this organization would struggle financially. Our $5.00 membership dues only can take us so far, and with inflation the way it is, we are asking for your support with this fundraiser. Sweepstakes ticket holders can win thousands of dollars based on the performance of the ran-domly assigned professional football teams written on the tickets. Football Mania sweepstakes are exciting and engaging for participants because ev-eryone has an equal chance of winning. Winning tickets are based on the points scored and yards gained by the football teams randomly assigned to it. Each week during the Football Mania season, the holder of the winning ticket wins prize money - it’s that easy! Each Football Mania sweepstakes ticket con-tains 3 random teams (called a ‘team combination) in each week of the Football Mania season you have a different set of teams each week. No two tickets have the same 3 teams in any given week. The total number of points scored by the three teams determines the value of the ticket. If two tickets have the same score, the total yards gained by the 3 teams is used as a tiebreaker. The more yards gained by the teams, the higher the score. The fewer the yards gained by the teams, the lower the score. The tickets with the four highest scoring

team combinations and the two lowest scoring team combinations each week win prizes. Throughout the 17-week season, participants check their tickets to see if they’ve won prizes. “Foot-ball Mania” sweepstakes ticket holders have 6 chanc-es to win a prize in each of the 17 weeks of the pro-fessional football season. They also have a chance to win two grand prized at the end of the season.

How winning tickets are calculated. Each week Charity Mania determines the winning tickets. They then send us the prize money so that we can send it to the winners with a personalized letter thanking them for their support. Charity Mania also posts the winning ticket number on the web site each week so that ticket holders can see if they’ve won.

Sign-up dates for Football ManiaFootball Mania officially begins September 7 2013 (the first week of the professional football season). We need you to return your ticket stub before Sep-tember 1st so we can enter all the ticket stub num-bers into the computer so they are all on file for the first game of the season. Thank you for your consideration, this fundraiser is very important to our organization and we hope you will take the time to participate and return your stubs ASAP. We are excited that this will become a annual fundraising event. Each ticket cost $20.00 - please make checks payable to: The Jim Thorpe Are Sports Hall of Fame.

JIM THORPE SPORTS HALL OF FAME WEBSITE !!!!!

We are online. During the summer of 2009 we contracted Keystone Networking Consultants, LLC to create our web-site. You can find us under jtsportshof.org. We are currently working to place 24 years of information on the site, regarding all our inductees pictures and bios from each of the banquet programs over the past 24 years.

There is information on the site at this time, so we suggest you check it out and if you have any feedback, we are open for suggestion. Take into consideration, 20 years of information is a lot to get online, so be patient with us and we will eventually get all the needed information up for your convenience.

You can Help! We often hear from the public or members, ‘”Why isn’t this person in the Hall of Fame?” Well, the simple answer is, that a nominee resume form has not been submitted for review by the nomination committee. Research into the accomplishments of a particular athlete is a very time consuming endeavor. It’s impossible for the Committee members to be aware of all the deserving candidates, and therefore, we depend on the membership and the public to submit names. One stipulation in our By-Laws is a candidate must be out of school 5 years before they are eligible for induction. We will keep a resume on file until they reach eligibility as long as we have it. We encourage any of you to submit a resume on them. The following is a listing of people who we consider future candidates. If you have the time please do a resume on any of them and submit it to us on or before April 1st of any given year for the candidate to be eligible for that year’s class. Back up material (newspaper clippings, etc.) are very helpful for proof of accomplishments. A nominee resume form can be obtained off of our website: jtsportshof.org. Please help us? We need your assistance to keep our resume file filled with potential candidates for future years. Thank You!!!

The Jim Thorpe Area Sports Hall of Fame is requesting you add your email address to the enclosed application. Being we have members linving in 43 different states in the Country, it's certainly easier trying to contact you with the press of a button, than writing a letter and putting it in the mail, taking days to get to our member who we may want an answer from ASAP! If your email is too personal for us to have on file, then don't include it...

WE NEED YOUR HELPThe sports hall of fame is in the process of having all our inductees from the past twenty-four years placed on our website (jtsportshof.org).

Something NewWe have adde a new line item on our membership applications. With all the technology that the Country has available to us, as consumers, and there are many times we need to reach out and touch one of our members. The easiest way and most convenient way to contact someone to ge an answer, especially those a great distance away is by Email!

We have all the pictures and short resumes from 1993 to 2012. We are in need of a Jim Thorpe Sports Hall of Fame Banquet Souvenir Program from the year 1990, 1991 and 1992! If someone has a copy, or knows someone who might have a copy, would you please contact us? We need to scan the inductees pictures and short resumes, so we can have our webmaster include them with all the other inductees that we currently have on the site. Please call Jack at 570-325-4923 with information. THANK YOU!!!!!!!

If you have not yet paid your 2014 dues, we request you send your dues in as soon as possible. An application is enclosed with the Newsletter. Thank you for your continued support.

SIXTEENTH ANNUAL SCHOLARSHIP AWARDED

FAMILY STYLE RAFTING TRIPOur "Family Style Rafting Trip On The Lehigh" last June was attended by 343 people and was a huge success for our fourth trip with the new Rafting Company, POCONO WHITEWATER ADVENTURES is one of the largest rafting centers in the area. They are located 8 miles north on State Route 903. We are hopeful that the many people who supported our rafting trip in 2012, will consider coming down the river with us again. The date of the "Rafting Trip" is Sunday, June 30th. A copy of the "Rafting Trip Flier" is enclosed for your convenience. Currently we are contacting all the people who were on our previous mailing list from years past. If this date is accommodating to your day trips during this summer, we would appreciate your attendance. Just a reminder, due to the great response in 2012, the "Rafting Trip" is limited to the first 360 people who sign up. All the previous trips down the "Lehigh" were very special fundraising events to our organization. Most of the profits from this event is set aside for our two scholarships that we present to two Jim Thorpe Area High School graduating seniors for the past 16 years. We are grateful for all your participation in the past, and we look forward to seeing all of you on Sunday, June 30th. Remember, the first 360 people who sign up, are on the river "with us". Don't wait, sign up today!
