Mediterranean world. The Jews ofthe Middle Ages endured the rackand the stake, resisting the efforts ofthe Church to compel them toconform to the demands of theOne True Religion. And theHolocaust is the tragic story of6,000,000 Jews who paid withtheir lives for the sole reason thata madman was seeking a worldfree of Jews.
The survival of the Jews onthe twenty-first century provides ameasure of assurance that the raceis not always to the swift nor thebattle to the strong. However tran-sitory their victory over the Syriansmay have appeared in the light ofsubsequent Jewish history, thestruggle of the Maccabees providesus with some assurance that thereis room for the non-conformist andthat people are not, as so oftenappears, doomed to lose the battleto preserve their individuality ordoomed to lose the freedom to livetheir own unique religious and cul-tural lives.
This year’s ChanukahFestival, preceding Christmas bysome three weeks, provides theJewish Community with an opportu-nity to observe the Feast of Lights ina leisurely, tranquil, traditionalfashion, somewhat removed fromthe tempo in which it is caught upwhen Chanukah coincides too close-ly in time with Christmas. Perhapsthis year we can devote somethought to the historical meaning ofChanukah.
The historic mission of theJew has been to serve as witness tothe free and independent humanspirit. Abraham broke with the reli-gious traditions of his time. Mosesbrought to the world a new conceptof man’s relationship with what hecalls “God”. The prophets fought formorality and justice against aJudaism which seemed to be petrify-ing into sterile ritual. TheMaccabees offered up their lives inthe struggle against the corrupting, corroding and debasing Hellenismwhich had swept across the whole

As four thousandHondurans march north toAmerica’s southern border,in an organized attempt toillegally immigrate, themedia is again talking aboutthis divisive issue that haspolarized the Americannation along political lines. In response, US PresidentDonald Trump has threat-ened to cut off funding toHonduras, if it doesn’t stopthe marchers in their raceto the finish line.
Since Trumplaunched his presidentialcandidacy in 2015 with apromise to stop the seem-ingly unlimited breaching ofAmerica’s southern bound-ary by building a wall, theissue of illegal immigrationhas captivated and divided
Are such accusa-tions justified? Can therereally be an analogy madebetween the massive Jewishimmigration of the early1900’s, and the controver-sial immigrations of today?
In my new book,Trump and the Jews, Iexplained that Jewishimmigrants to the UnitedStates were legal immi-grants (with boat records toprove it) who came to EllisIsland on the New Yorkshores wanting only to be“real Americans”. Manyarrived with only the shirts
on their backs, but theycame to America to humblywork hard, to learn hard, and to achieve.Discrimination againstJews was a real issue inthose days, but there wereno “Days of Rage” in theJewish community. ForAmerican Jews, discrimina-tion was an incentive towork harder and to be moreentrepreneurial. After someyears of working in sweat-shops, the Jews startedemerging from poverty, becoming managers ofthose same factories andeventually starting theirown thriving businesses, many becoming greatAmerican success stories.

They accusedTrump’s senior advisorStephen Miller, who hap-pens to be Jewish, ofhypocrisy, since he was oneof the main architects of theTrump immigration policy, yet his grandparents wereJewish immigrants fromRussia who were welcomedinto the country.

Hatred of Jews is anancient cancer of the soulthat refuses to die. Forthousands of years, succes-sive generations of bigotshave embraced it, each try-ing to sell anti-Semitism ina new and more attractiveway, with new lies and slan-ders. One of the mostprominent peddlers of thisvile doctrine in America
today is Palestinian-American Linda Sarsour.
Recently, in asupreme irony, Sarsour wasinvited to head a panel dis-cussion at the New Schoolfor Social Research in NewYork City on combatinganti-Semitism. This makesas much sense as inviting aKu Klux Klan leader to head

And Sarsour is alsoa strong supporter of theBoycott, Divestment, andSanctions (BDS) movementagainst Israel. The movementcompares Israel to SouthAfrica under its formerwhite minority governmentthat discriminated againstnon whites. BDS seeks toisolate Israel from the worldas an international pariah,

a discussion on combatingracism, or inviting dis-graced filmmaker HarveyWeinstein to head a discus-sion on combating sexualmisconduct.
Sadly, Sarsour isjust one of many enablersand inciters of a troublingnew anti-Semitism growingin America today, especiallyon college campuses, whereit is poisoning young minds.
Like a wolf insheep’s clothing, this newanti-Semitism seeks to dis-guise itself – often by posingas a progressive movementsupporting human rights ofPalestinians. But like thewolf that masquerades as asheep, the modern-day Jew-haters are what they are, regardless of how they seekto cover it up.
Sarsour gainedinstant media celebrity sta-tus as co-chair of theNational Women’s Marchprotesting in Washingtonagainst President Trumpthe day after his inaugura-

calling for the end to invest-ment, trade, cultural andacademic ties with theJewish State.
The BDS movementechoes the boycott of Jewishbusinesses ordered by AdolfHitler after he became thedictator of Germany in1933. The Star of David waspainted on the doors andwindows of businessesowned by Jews, along withanti-Semitic slogans andsigns saying “Don’t Buyfrom Jews.”
And while Sarsourasserts she is not againstthe existence of Israel, herclaim is absurd. She wantsto replace Israel with a “one-state solution” in which theculture and identities ofover 6 million Jewish citi-zens would be extinguishedand subsumed under anation combining Israel, theWest Bank and Gaza thatwould quickly have an Arabmajority.
Making Jews aminority in the land ofIsrael, which was created tobe the only Jewish state onEarth, would turn the coun-try into yet another Arab-majority Mideast nation. From Morocco to Iraq, thosenations drove out most oftheir Jewish citizensdecades ago and have a longrecord of discriminationagainst the few whoremained. Israeli Jewswould meet a similar fate, orworse.
Sarsour is a symp-tom of worsening anti-Semitism in America. In2016, despite constitutingunder 2 percent of the U.S.population, Jews were thetargets of 684 of the 1,273anti-religion incidents tal-lied by the FBI – more thandouble all other anti-reli-gious attacks combined.
Most of the incidentsinvolved damage or vandal-ism against synagogues andcemeteries. But 238 involvedintimidation and threats onour nation’s campuses. FBI

At a time whenLinda Sarsour and progres-sive “anti-Zionists” havejoined racist and neo-Nazigroups working to endAmerica’s long history asfriendly territory for Jews,we would do well to heedthe words of an Americanhero revered by all – GeorgeWashington.

At the White House
Sheldon Adelson,Steve Schwarzman, MichaelMilken and Dan Gilbert alljoined Donald Trump towatch the mid-term electionresults. The Adelsonsdonated more than $100million to the CongressionalLeadership Fund, a superPAC allied with HouseSpeaker Paul Ryan, and theSenate Leadership Fund, which is closely tied to Sen.Mitch McConnell.
For Adelson theevening was anything but avictory. Senator DeanHeller, Nevada’s incumbentRepublican, lost the race forthe Senate to Jackie Rosen,a Jewish congresswoman.
The guests “dined”on pizza, mini hot dogs, hamburgers and Frenchfries. The dishware, howev-er, was described as “ele-gant”.
And as an addednote Miriam Adelson, aphysician who has part-nered with her casino mag-

BRIDGES: Alsolocated on Granville Island,Bridges (www.bridges-restaurant.com) serves thefreshest seafood Vancouverhas to offer. One of my old-est friends, CliffordMargolese, moved toVancouver 35 years ago. When I asked if we couldmeet for lunch, he immedi-ately suggested Bridges. Itwas my first time back in 10years and the place has notlost any of its charms. Onthis beautiful day we sat outon the patio, looking out atthe waterfront.
Bridges opened in1980 on the western tip ofGranville Island, a redevel-opment project orchestratedby the federal government'sCanadian Mortgage andHousing Corporation andbacked by a group of Jewishbusinessmen.
Bridges operates asecond floor dining roomwith 150 seats inside and a40 seat terrace. On themain floor is a 120 seatbistro and a 100 seat barwith its own terrace.During the summer monthsthey operate Vancouver'slargest patio, with a licensefor 300 seats on the water-front. What do we recom-mend? Well for one thingyou will probably need to goback more than once.Clifford and I shared some
delicious calamari. For mymain meal I rememberedhow good the grilled chickenclub burger was. Clifford, always the healthy eater, chose the mixed greensalad, featuring marketfresh vegetables, organicgreens and honey lemonvinaigrette.

Dinner at Gothamis an occasion to remember. The four year old with usloved his choice from thekids menu –a grilled cheesesandwich and mashed pota-toes. After starting out withsome drinks, we wentdirectly to our main cours-es: a 32 ounce bone-in ribsteak, served sliced, andnicely shared by two people;a perfectly prepared filet;the Blackened Ahi Tuna;and the fish of the day, which happened to be hal-ibut.
