A Matter of Perspective Rabbi Dovid Zirkind, Assistant Rabbi

In his novel, The Magician’s Nephew, C.S. Lewis wrote: “What you see and what you hear depends a great deal on where you are stand-ing. It also depends on what sort of person you are.”

The term meraglim, meaning scouts or spies, is used in two separate narratives in the Chumash. In our Parsha it refers to the group of men sent to explore the land of Israel for the first time; the other instance, an earlier one, hails from the story of Yosef and his brothers. Yaakov sends ten of his sons to seek food, not knowing that Yosef was in a position of authority. Upon seeing them for the first time in years, and inter-ested in reuniting with Binyamin, Yosef accuses his unknowing siblings of being meraglim, rather than customers. Repeatedly in Perek 42 of Bereishit, the Torah highlights this one word, me-raglim, hinting at a strong connection between the stories.

Often, Chazal insert a prophetic and futuristic storyline into the conversations of Bereishit. Furthering our observation, the Baal HaTurim does exactly that in explaining the de-bate between Yosef and the brothers. In calling them meraglim, writes the Baal Haturim, Yosef envisions the resolve of his grandson Yehoshua, who overcame the temptation to accept a prem-ature surrender, in contrast to the ten meraglim who failed. It is Yehuda who responds “we are not meraglim,” and his grandson Caleb was also able to persevere. Why does the Torah link these stories terminologically, and why do Chazal see Yosef and his brothers as a pre-cursor to the story of Parshat Shelach?

It can be argued that the meraglim erred not in what they saw but in how they

perceived it. The strength and security of Eretz Canaan was likely objective, but a faithful na-tion on a divine journey is expected to see the promise of their Creator as their unshakeable destiny. In perceiving the challenge as a godless military hurdle, they had lost the war before it even began.

Yosef shares the contents of his dreams with his brothers; he likely shares too much. In-stinctively though, the brothers perceive his vision as an attempt to usurp the future destiny of the chosen nation and remove them from history, an extreme conclusion which Yosef never imagined. In selling Yosef, the brothers take a life-altering risk based on their misinterpretation of his dreams; a mistake that would come back to haunt them. Indeed it is ironic that Yosef would call them meraglim years later, as they again misinterpreted what was right before their eyes; not an Egyptian, but the brother they hoped to rid themselves of in their youth.

The challenge of both narratives is one; to look beyond the most obvious conclusions and see the greatest possibilities. Had the brothers seen the possibility of coexistence, had the me-raglim not forgotten God’s mighty hand, the stories of the Chumash would have unfolded in a drastically different way. Who knows what will be, if we’re able to look at the world with fresh eyes, to see success and achievement as the most likely consequence of our efforts?
