Marina of The YearBy IVA DANFORD - NAISARA

Fijis premier marina facility, Port Denarau Marina, which is also the hub of the integrated Denarau Island Resort won the category of International Marina of the Year at the Marine Industries Associa-tion (MIA) Awards Dinner in Gold Coast on Tuesday, May 5..

Port Denarau Marinas Manag-ing Director, Mr Nigel Skeggs said, this is an incredible achievement both for their team and Fiji as a destination.

We have strived to develop a product that contributes to the va-riety of offerings in Fijis tourism market while driving the finan-cial and social contribution to the outer islands of Fiji by attracting these tourists to our shores, says Skeggs.

He said in developing a marina they have been very isolated and to receive this recognition from their peers is incredibly satisfying and recognition that not only are they doing it right but they are a leading marina globally.

It does not get any better than this and I am very proud of our success. I would like to thank our board for their support and vision

and for our great team for bringing it to fruition, he said.

Skeggs said this is an award that all of Fiji can be proud of and firmly cements the nation as a yachting tourism destination.

As I have told my team, we are allowing ourselves some time to enjoy and celebrate our suc-cess but more than ever we must continue developing and ensuring that we offer the level of service

expected from an international award winning marina.

The awards were part of the Marine15 International Confer-ence and Trade Exhibition which was held on the Gold Coast from May 3-5.

According to the Annual Fijian International Yachting Visitors Sur-vey, which is conducted each year by Port Denarau Marina as an aid to market Fiji as a destination for

this valuable segment of the tour-ism sector, there has been a sharp increase in numbers, with the to-tal value of yachting tourism to the Fijian economy for 2014 sitting at over $39.5m.

TThe MIA is the peak indus-try body for the marina industries in Australia, Asia and the Pacific regions and is dedicated to the needs of marina owners and oper-ators of berthing, mooring, storage

and slipway/workshop facilities connected to sailing, cruising and general boating.

Port Denarau Marina headed out the other finalists in this cate-gory of Port Montenegro in Europe, Albany Marina in the Bahamas and Westhaven Marina in Auckland, NZ.

The Vodafone Fiji 7s team finished and won the 2014/2015 World Sevens Series at a very high note and was praised by their perfor-mance not only by rugby fans but Fiji as a whole.

This was witnessed during the celebration of their May 20 arrival of the boys from the Nadi Airport all the way to the Capital city.

The streets of Suva were jam-packed with crowds gathered to greet the national team, with a huge number of turnouts swarming

    ReigningChampions

Albert Park to catch a glimpse of the team.

Everyone believed that Coach Ben Ryan has brought the standard of 7s in Fiji to another level and Fijis performance in the 2014/2015 HSBC Sevens World Series and brought new life to the game.

Fiji has now qualified for the Rio Olympics next year together with South Africa, New Zea-land, England and Bra-zil.

Western farmers have received a boost in their farming career as Vodafone ATH Fiji Foundation and West-ern Charity Alliance once again assisted them in the provision of vegetable seeds to improve their farming strategies.

More engagement from other CSOs and government sector is needed to boost agri-culture in our nation at the same time to im-prove the livelihoods of our low income earned farmers, says

    Vodafone Project Offi-cer Jitendra Naidu.

He said they have been working with Farmers in Rakiraki, Tavua and Ba area to improve farming and to benefit their com-munity.

Farmers and general public can also receive free farming tips via their mobile through mFarmacy program which is absolutely free. The message will be broadcasted on daily basis and farmers and other individuals with interest in farming can take full advantage of it.

Mr Naidu said cur-rently they are working with Ministry of Youth

& Sports to engage more youth into farm-ing under Youths Feed The Nation Project.

We are very thank-ful to Mr Valami Divi-sional Youth Officer West and his team for his contribution and suppor, he said.

Night works began at the Votualevu Roundabout in Nadi earlier last month and is expected to continue for the next 6 to 8 weeks as changing lane restrictions and traffic controllers will be in place.

The night shift will be from 6.00pm in the evening through to 6.00am the fol-lowing morning.

Fiji Roads Authority has advised all travellers pass-ing through Votualevu Roundabout of the com-mencement of intermittent night time working by the contractor.

FRA NASRUP Pro-gramme Manager, Zaina Khan said night time work

is not suitable for all as-pects of complex capital works projects.

We have arrived at a point in the Nadi project where we can allow for some night time working such as pavement surfac-ing works. However a great percentage of our work will still take place during the day, she said.

Ms Khan said this is be-cause they cannot compro-mise on safety and quality when complex utility re-locations and construc-tion are taking place, also night time working is risky in terms of safety and the shift work can be exhaust-ing on their workforce.

Over this period, the contractor will be inter-mittently operating on a 24-hour basis, in two shift patterns; day and night, on the Votualevu Roundabout until lane restrictions are lifted.

FRA and our project teams are aware of the heightened congestion is-sues currently being ex-perienced along our most active construction sites as pedestrians, vehicular traffic, utilities relocation and road construction all compete for space within the road corridor.

The best remedy is for the project team is to open restricted sections as early

He added that they are also looking very closely on income gen-erating projects for the unemployed Youths and women in local communities to sustain their livelihood.

as we can to reduce the overall disruption to the community wherever pos-sible, she said.

Turaga-ni-Koros, women and youth leaders of the vil-lages of Toga and Natawa-tawadi from the Tikina of Naqalimare in the province of Nadroga/Navosa are cur-rently undergoing an Effec-tive Leadership and Good Governance Training facili-tated by the Citizens Consti-tutional Forum (CCF) in Toga village.

Effective leadership plays a vital role in the devel-opment of good governance practices in all communi-ties and institutions. This workshop aims to address the capacity needs of lead-ers increasing their skills and knowledge which helps them become effective lead-ers in their communities and organisations, said CCFs Community Education and Field Officer, Sereima Lutu-bula.

CCF believes that a char-acter of a good leader is fundamental to the success of their leadership style. A strong character of integrity, honesty and a proactive ap-

proach to challenges is vital. This training is conducted

for the first time for the two villages and CCF hopes to educate and build leaders capacity in areas of good governance and leadership, enabling a participatory ap-proach to their projects and avoiding top-down hierar-chies. CCF hopes to equip leaders with the knowledge to conduct their own needs analysis with their commu-nities to identify develop-ment projects.

From previous CCFs community education work-shops it has been identified that villages need more ca-pacity building in develop-ing project plans and writ-ing simple project papers. Through this workshop CCF aims to build the capacities of communities in proposal writing for development projects.

The training will also provide practical project writing skills and informa-tion so they can learn how to access funds for develop-

ment projects and how to utilize the strengths in their community, said Ms Lutu-bula.

Similar training were successfully conducted in Tikina Noikoro in the vil-lages of Nakoro, Navitilevu, Vatubalevu and Namoli,

Tikina Namataka in the vil-lages of Draiba, Keiyasi, Na-saucoko and Tikina Bemana in the village of Tuvu, which is located in the highlands of Navosa. CCF has noted immense positive develop-ments in these villages.

    Many villages now have

a fair idea of how to finan-cially support themselves and their family and to also manage their groups and committees in a more trans-parent and fair manner, Mrs Lutubula said.

The United Nations Strengthening Citizens and

Engagement in Fiji Initiative (SCEFI) supported this train-ing.

The training was held on the 27th and 28th May 2015.

    Western Police National Sports Day

The Western Division Community Policing has come up with a new initia-tive to involve all the school-leavers and unemployed youths between Nadroga to Rakiraki corridor in this years National Sports Day which is going to be held on June 26-27.

The event is focused on the theme of Engaging and Empowering Youths in Sports and is also in line with the Government of the days new National Capacity Building.

Divisional Manager Com-munity Policing Western A/ASP Petero Tuinirarama says with their targeted group as youths from all the 30 police post in the western division and their mission is to get them away from engaging themselves in criminal ac-tivities.

We want them to go back and be good citizen and fight alongside the law enforcing officers in their own districts, A/ASP Tuinir-arama said.

He said there is no fee to be paid in this sports day and this will be a life changing

    By IVA DANFORD- NAISARA

experience for them. This will be the biggest

thing done by the western division community policing and we will also be prov-ing the youths with accom-modation for the two day event, he says.

A/ASP Tuinirarama be-lieves the reason they have youths as their targeted groups is that youths are the most crime committers in the country.

There will be four sports played during the day and one police post can bring two to three teams per sport.

The sports include seven-a-side rugby, soccer, netball and volleyball.

A\ASP Tuinirarama said there will also be prize mon-ey for the winners and the runners up for every sport, as well as the best player.

He said rugby will have $1000 for the winner, $500 for the runners up and $100 for the best players.

Whereas for soccer, net-ball and volleyball will have $500 for the winning team, $250 for the runners-up and $100 for the best player.

The National Sports Day will be held at ground 2 and 3 at the Churchill Park in Lautoka.

Student Designers to Get More Support

Student designers in this years Fiji Fashion Week had a timely boost in their par-ticipation as the Australian High Commission and the Fashion Council of Fiji an-nounced their support for them.

The two contributing par-ties will have their own con-tribution to the students.

Three student designers will be sponsored by the Australian High Commis-sion to help them prepare in showcasing their work at the Fiji Fashion Week.

On the other hand, Fash-ion Council has facilitated the selection of the student designers, and will provide mentorship and technical assistance as they prepare to debut their collections.

Fashion Council chairper-son Faraz Ali said they are proud and grateful that the Australian High Commis-sion has agreed to partner with them to alleviate some of the financial pressure on

student designers so that they can truly put their best efforts into their capsule collections at Fiji Fashion Week.

My team and I at the Fashion Council are very ex-cited about the future of our nascent industry. Naturally, this future is dependent upon new talent, said Ali.

Additional Australian Government support for the fashion industry in Fiji in-cludes the provision of two Australia Award scholar-ships for fashion studies in 2014 and Australia-Pacific Technical College courses on garment construction.

Australian High Commis-sioner Margaret Twomey said every designer needs to start somewhere.

We hope these spon-sorships will give budding designers the confidence they need, enabling them to focus their creative ener-gies on making their Fashion Week entries the best they can be, said Commissioner Twomey

Discussions on how to help identify priority ac-tions to narrow skills gaps and combat unemploy-ment rates took place at the Tertiary and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) Financing Forum in Novotel Hotel, Nadi on May 4-5.

This was part of a re-gional research initiative commissioned by the Aus-tralian Government into the financing of technical training in the Pacific.

DFAT Counsellor for Regional Health, Educa-tion and Gender, Sheona McKenna said the study came about in response to calls from Pacific Min-isters for Education for a more market-driven and relevant TVET platform to drive economic growth in their countries.

The research findings and resulting discussions at this Forum help to iden-tify priority actions to nar-row skills gaps, combat unemployment rates and ensure TVET courses are relevant and of high qual-

ity, she said.McKenna said this can

in turn increase opportuni-ties for broader sources of funding of technical train-ing, including from the pri-vate sector.

Working with Pacific governments, education providers and industry stakeholders, the Austra-lian Government has in-vested in vocational skills development across the region and supported ev-idence-based reform in vocational and technical training.

Executive Chairman of the Fiji Higher Education Commission Dr Richard Wah, who was also pres-ent at the Forum, said it is good to know that the TVET developments that have been supported by the Government of Fiji over the last two years are in line with the findings of the research.

We thank DFAT for the opportunity to be able to learn from our regional partners and international researchers, he said.

The Forum brought to-gether sixty policy makers, researchers, practitioners, donors and NGOs from across the region to share

experiences and stimulate policy dialogue on how the technical training sector is financially supported at na-tional and regional levels.

Today (May 7th) marks another important milestone for the Fiji National Univer-sity following the signing of a Memorandum of Under-standing with the Kingdom of Tonga.

The historic signing was done by the Fiji National Uni-versitys Acting Vice Chan-cellor Professor Ian Rouse and Tongas Minister for Infrastructure, Honourable Etuate Sungalu Lavulavu at FNUs main boardroom on Nasinu Campus.

This is certainly a signifi-cant partnership between the Fiji National University and the People of Tonga. Our friendship between island countries in the Pacific has existed for many years and this MoU signing today reaf-firms this special bond, said Professor Rouse.

The MoU will establish a cooperative partnership, based on friendship and co-operation, for the purpose of promoting mutual un-derstanding, leading to the strengthening of both parties

    through identified develop-ment activities.

It recognises the inten-tion of FNU, as a leading ter-tiary education provider in the Pacific and Tongas Min-istry of Infrastructure, to co-operate in a broad range of areas and to work together for their mutual benefit.

Specific areas of interest shared by the two Heads in-clude the sharing of knowl-edge, expertise and tech-nical information and the building of critical pathways to quality and advanced learning.

This sort of arrangement is important for us, it pro-vides an opportunity for us to extend our learning and training programmes be-yond our traditional bound-aries, said Professor Rouse.

FNU signed a similar MoU with Kiribati Government through its Institute of Tech-nology.

We have already start-ed the development work on this. Long term, we are

committed to a regional service delivery by working closely with individual na-tional educational services providers of island countries in the provision of accred-ited trade certificates and short terms skills upgrade programmes, commented Professor Rouse.

The Parties agree to en-courage and promote the following activities:

Training programs; Exchange of ideas, ex-

    pertise and knowledge in the areas mutually agreed;

    Exchange of publica-tions, relevant technical information and academic materials between the re-spective organisations;

We are very encouraged to note that some industries are already posting record figures such as the honey and poultry industry.

This was announced by the chief economic officer of the Ministry of Agricul-tures policy and statistics division Mr Pauliasi Tuilau on Day 3 of the Livestock Sector Forum at Tanoa in-ternational Hotel in Nadi.

The honey industry is almost 100 percent self sufficient while the poultry industry is around 80 90 percent. So we can see that we are getting there and it is indicative of Governments investor friendly policies towards improving supply and at the same time, re-ducing our import bill, Mr Tuilau said.

He highlighted that Governments initiative to

enhance the agricultural sector, in particular in the livestock industry, will soon come to fruition with stake-holders confirming that positive results are being re-corded.

His announcement was supported by one of the larg-est Feed milling companys representative Mr William Greig of Crest Feed Mills Limited.

He said, Right now 90 per cent of their feeds are for poultry while the rest is sold to other livestock farmers, but they are producing close to 14 tonnes of feed per hour so to make sure that they have a sustainable poultry industry.

We are other players also coming into the poultry sector such as Rooster poul-try, Toa Fiji and other small holder farmers which is an indication that the poultry sector is doing above expec-tations, Mr William said.

Mr Tuilau said Goodman Fielders (Crest Chicken) is

also exporting its products abroad especially in the re-gion so that is also a good sign of the increase in pro-duction levels,

He said in the dairy indus-try, they are still far off but they have programmes, poli-cies and initiatives in place to improve the dairy indus-try as well.

The nations annual dairy products (butter, yogurt and others) consumption, re-quires around 70 80 million litres of milk.

However Fijis current annual milk consumption is around 20 million litres per annum which the local in-dustry is only able to supply only half of the figure.

Farmer, Joji Ramasima who was a participant at the forum said the potential op-portunities for dairy farmers are huge and he urged those in the industry and those planning to join the industry to work together towards meeting the demand.

Fiji Airways Board Direc-tor Stefan Pichler says they are excited to enter into a new partnership with an ex-perienced ground handling company like Aero-Care for their New Zealand opera-tions.

Customer service and on-time performance are key deliverables for us so

we want to work with part-ners like Aero-Care that rec-ognise and understand our service requirements, this is very important to us, he said.

This includes operations related to ramp and custom-er services, aircraft cleaning and baggage claim in Auck-land, Christchurch and the Fijian carriers soon-to-be launched Wellington servic-es. Aero-Care was selected after a tender process.

Jason Gray, Aero-Cares New Zealand Director said they are proud to have been selected by Fiji Airways to partner in the exciting future of this innovative and pro-gressive airline.

Talanoa Session Heats Up In Nadi

The Commissioner of Police Ben Groenewald and his command Group around the Western Divi-sion conducted a talanoa session in Nadi Civic Cen-tre on May 26th.

Issues of noisy night-clubs, issuing firearms to polices, and the need of more police officers arose during the discus-

sion. If we look into the

incident that happened a month ago in Nadi Aerotown Mobil Service Station, the crime scene approach by the police was totally unprofession-al.

These were the words of the Nadi Chamber of Commerce and Indus-tries President Dr Ram Raju while highlight the fact that police officers should be given guns to deal with these types of

    situations.Commissioner Groe-

newald regarded the Aerotown incident as an embarrassing act by the Fiji Police Force and they are looking for the intro-duction of a non-lethal way of arming policemen with taser guns.

I am not in favour of issuing firearms to our people. Yes, we do have firearms but they are only issued to our people dur-ing special circumstanc-es, he says.

He said the concept of the taser meant enough to allow the officer to ar-rest the criminal.

There were also a number of complaints received about drunken roaming the main streets of Nadi in the early hours mostly from residents of Martinatar where three popular nightclubs are located.

Andrea Wong a Marti-natar resident for more than 30 years said she has been lodging her com-

plaint with the Police Na-maka but was unhappy of how the police handled her complaints about the issue.

Ive made a number of complaints to police about this and I was told to One they said that I should go straight to the Prime Ministers office, two put up with the noise and the other option was to move from where I lived for more than 30 years, says Wong.

    Responding to her is-

sue, the Commissioner said it was unacceptable for police officers to ad-dress the issue in such manner and suggested that an investigation be carried out into the com-plaint.

He concluded in gen-eral the police officers work involves protec-tion of life and property through the enforcement of laws.

Five hundred people are confirmed to be par-ticipating in Fijis premier tourism industry event, at the end of registrations which was on Friday, May 1.

Putting more emphasis on the importance of the tourism industry in Fijis economy and the numer-ous positive impacts the industry has on the lives of the local community, the Fijian Tourism Expo (FTE) 2015 will focus on the theme of Tourism and the Community.

Tourism Fijis Director of Events, Ms Sally Coo-per said community and tourism are symbiotic in Fiji, which will be illus-trated beautifully by FTE.

In this community theme, Westpac Bank has given their exhibition space to Rise Beyond the Reef to exhibit the prod-ucts produced by rural women. Even the Fiji Cof-fee and Fiji Water on offer throughout FTE are Fijian Made, Ms Cooper adds.

    By iVA DANFORD - NAISARA

Tourist Transport Fiji (TTF) and ATS Pacific are facilitating meet and greet, as well as accom-modating on the ground transfers throughout FTE 2015.

This year at FTE there is a focus on Tourism and the Community; how Tourism can benefit our

local community through employment opportuni-ties, supporting Fijian Made and Fijian Crafted by working with Fijian en-tertainers and artists, Ms Cooper said.

A record 292 Fijian tour-ism product and service providers have registered for the three-day event,

and a total of 125 booths have been booked. 169 international buyers and media are confirmed to attend FTE this year, who are being brought in by the platinum sponsor, Fiji Airways.

FTE 2015 will be held this month and will com-mence with an official

welcome ceremony by Pacific Destinations, fol-lowed by a fashion show of Fijian Made by Fijian designers in conjunction with the support from Rosie DMC and Accor.

The Pacific Agriculture Policy Project (PAPP) under the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) imple-mented a workshop which allowed all stakeholders to discuss issues affecting the livestock industries in Fiji.

The national consulta-tion, themed Livestock for Livelihoods-new generation thinking was funded by the European Union held on May 12-15 at the Tanoa Inter-national Hotel in Nadi.

While opening the Fo-rum, Permanent Secretary for Finance, Mr Filimone Waqabaca said the main aim of the forum was to share information on the key livestock constraints and op-portunities available in Fiji.

The livestock sector plays an integral part in rural life in the Pacific and more importantly in Fiji, he said.

It is estimated that over 60% of the rural population participates in livestock re-lated activities.

Mr Waqabaca said live-stock is of economic im-portance, contributing on average 9% of the total agri-cultural GDP of 12%.

He added livestock con-tribute to nutritional secu-rity through the provision of meat, milk and eggs and

provide important farm in-puts such as draught power and manure to sustain crop production for food and feed.

He says livestock produc-tion and productivity in Fiji has faced a lot of challenges over the years, with its share of successes.

The level of imports of animal and animal products into Fiji have been high due to the shortfalls of livestock production resulting in the draining of foreign reserves to meet the protein nutrient requirements of the popula-tion from sources abroad, he said.

Mr Waqabaca said the Government intends to

maximize the opportunities that are available locally and support programs and ac-tivities that will strengthen local initiatives and reduce dependency on imports. This also ties in well with Governments emphasis on supporting Fijian Made Ini-tiatives.

He says todays multifac-eted livestock industry and fast changing world calls for a close partnership.

Globalization presents many challenges and oppor-tunities to Fiji and as such there is need to cooperate with the aim of achieving mutual benefits.

The forum highlighted possible avenues for coop-

eration between stakehold-ers and also come up with beneficial, cutting-edge strategies, which positively impacted the livestock in-dustries in Fiji.

Mr Waqabaca believed it may be appropriate to orga-nize resources and conduct livestock sector reviews in-cluding assessment of policy issues and options for food security and poverty reduc-tion.

Over the years, the Minis-try has been focusing efforts that are supportive of the policies and projects that would boost local produc-tion and self-sufficiency.

The Ministry of Agricul-ture has also been involved

in the national consultation with stakeholders on the Draft Feed Bill and will be amended if appropriate be-fore it is legislated.

Stakeholders which were present at the meeting in-cluded the Fiji Meat Indus-try Board, Fiji Cooperatives Dairy Company Limited, Fiji Dairy Limited, Yaqara Pasto-ral Company, Pig Producers Association, Bee Keepers Association, Feed Millers and Poultry Producers. Also included are the Reserve Bank of Fiji, Fiji Develop-ment Bank, iTaukei Land Trust Board and the Minis-try of National Planning/Fi-nance.

This award was also a boost to Fijis growth as a yacht cruising destination.

The Minister for Industry, Trade and Tourism Honour-able Faiyaz Koya said the recognition fitted in with the government vision of developing a tourism sector based on quality of service.

Fiji is just not another tourism destination, but a destination that provides that additional personal touch, a destination where people really care and a des-tination that leaves a lasting impression on its visitors, Mr Koya said.

He said the yachting in-dustrys contribution to the tourism sector was growing every year and the Govern-ment was working with the industry to provide the nec-essary support to ensure that this growth was main-tained.

Fiji is the hub of the Pa-cific and the ideal destina-tion or stopover for yachts, including super yachts, hence it is important that necessary infrastructure is in place to maximise the re-turns from this industry.

On Saturday 6th June the International School Nadi will be running its annual Fun day gala with something for everyone to enjoy and be a part of. To help with transport there will be a free shuttle bus from Nadi town to school return and entry is free. The details are in the attached advertisement.

However, new Principal Hector Hatch says that as well as providing the com-munity with a day of fun there are many other com-munity services provided by the school and by its wider local and expatriate com-munity.

On an International level by providing students with a world class education system students have been able to study at the Univer-sity of their choice in coun-tries all over the world.

International School Nadi offers its students a pro-gramme called the Interna-tional Baccalaureate. This is an academically demanding course that begins in Year 1 and ends in Year 13 with the completion of an Interna-tional Baccalaureate Diplo-ma. This is a highly sought after qualification that is acceptable in Universities

all over the world. Over the last 2 years graduates from the schools Diploma pro-gramme are now studying courses in the following uni-versities.

Hatch is no stranger to International education and community awareness. He is the son of Hector Hatch senior who was a former politician, representative to the International Labour or-ganisation, former Fiji repre-sentative to the Melbourne Olympics (1956) and Direc-tor of a multinational com-pany (Carpenters LTD) for a number of years.

Hatch is also well placed to lead an International School. He has taught in both locally (Ratu Kadavu-levu School )and Interna-tionally for 29 years having graduated with a Masters in Education Administra-tion and Leadership from Massey University in NZ and having had several years experience as an Assistant Principal and as a Deputy Principal before taking up the post of Principal at Inter-national School Nadi.

His vision to help build a strong International com-munity in Nadi by bridging the gap between the expa-

standing of the community awareness and responsibili-ties that lie at the heart of the International Baccalaureate Programme.

This community and service focus of the Inter-national Baccalaureate Pro-gramme has resulted in the school undertaking a num-

ber of community projects many of which are ongoing. These will be highlighted in further editions.

Meanwhile, the school welcomes visit by parents, prospective parents and students to check out the school and would encour-age the Nadi community to

take full advantage of the free shuttle service that is available on Saturday June 6th to join in the fun and festivities of their annual fun day advertised below.

    InterContinental Fiji Awards Employees

InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spas Vatemo Vaqonaqona from the Food & Beverage department and Ana Drawelaca of House-keeping were delighted to be the winning nominees to receive the Employee of the Year Awards for 2014, and be recognised for displaying true InterContinental service behaviours.

The resort recently cel-ebrated their annual Em-ployee of the Year Awards for 2014 and Out of the 24 candidates the nominees were entered in an internal voting poll to win this award.

The candidates were rec-ognised as Employees of the Month in the previous year for exceptional service and positive attitude towards both guests and team mem-bers.

The InterContinental Rec-ognition Program recognises colleagues for Living the Brand - service standards which InterContinental em-ployees live by.

To be recognised, em-ployees must first showcase

to one of three behaviours; Make it Memorable, Be Charming and Stay in the Moment. Once one of these categories have been identified and recognised, they are given a Recognition Card by their supervisor or manager. Each recognition card allows the opportunity to enter the running for be-coming Employee of the Month.

There are two categories for the Employee of the Year awards; Front of House for employees that interact with guests and Heart of House for those behind the scenes who still find a way to shine.

Vaqonaqona, who took home the award for the Front of House as the Best Frontliner, was awarded a return Fiji Airways ticket to Brisbane, Australia and a five night stay in luxury Inter-Continental Sanctuary Cove Resort.

Drawelaca, who won the Heart of House award as the best heart and core member, walked away with return Fiji Airways tickets for two to any destination the airline flies to and a five night stay in any InterConti-nental Hotels Group (IHG) property at that destination.

    Area General Manager

South Pacific Erik Stuebe said they want to show their gratitude and reward the achievements by recognis-ing their efforts to establish InterContinental Fiji as the best resort to work for, and for providing the best guest experience.

The starting point for a great guest experience is a great team.

With each passing year the resorts performance always exceeds previous successes. This could not be possible without the relent-less support from our dedi-cated team, said Stuebe.

Owned by Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF) and managed by InterContinen-tal Hotels Group (IHG), the resort provides services that go beyond the world-renowned Fijian warmth and hospitality to give guests authentic, enriching experi-ences and insights into the Fijian culture and way of life.

InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa is part of the In-tercontinental Hotel Group (IHG). With over 4,800 ho-tels in over 110 countries and territories there is liter-ally a world of opportunity for IHG employees who as-pire to grow and develop their careers.

Tourism Expo to Promote Local Designers and Labels

Local fashion designers have been given a chance to showcase their talents at the Fijian Tourism Expo (FTE) 2015 and will be provided a distinctive platform to mar-ket their labels next month.

FTE 2015 is also expected to play a vital role in con-necting local Fijian design-ers with the tourism indus-try stakeholders that will eventually lead to readily accessible Fijian Designed and Made garments to the 600,000 plus international visitors that grace Fijis shores every year.

This has been made pos-sible following the Fiji Fash-ion Week (FJFW) joining Tourism Fiji as a partner for the Expo.

FJFW Managing Director, Ellen whippy-Knight says the Fijian Tourism Expo is the biggest event offering access to major stakehold-ers in Fijis tourism industry.

Were excited to be in-volved with FTE because its giving FJFW the oppor-tunity to showcase locally designed and made labels to give these designers the opportunity to network and more importantly market their label to internal and

    external markets, she add-ed.

FJFW, which is in its eighth year of production and a wide range of activi-ties, is targeted to promote the fashion industry in Fiji.

In 2014, FJFW received over 3,000 guests over seven Shows in one week. This year, FJFW have at least 70 designers and over 100 models that took part at the show.

85% of designers showing at this years FJFW are local-ly designed and made in Fiji.

Tourism Fijis Director of Events, Ms Sally Cooper says the Fijian Tourism Expo is all about Fiji and the com-munity.

This includes Fijian Made and Fijian Crafted and so the opportunity to partner with FJFW featuring Fijian designers is important for the event.

She added they would like to see locally made Fi-jian products in all resort boutiques as it is an opportu-nity to show case what can be produced here, not only to Fijis international visitors but also local industry.

Tourism Fiji is a big sup-porter of FJFW and the op-portunities it creates for the community, Ms Cooper adds.

The Acting Prime Minister and Attorney General Honor-able Aiyaz Sayed - Khaiyum received the fifth new Boe-ing 737-800 Fiji Airways air-craft - the Island of Ovalau on May 27 at the Fiji airway hanger in Nadi International Airport after having left the Netherlands last weekend..

In welcoming the new aircraft, Hon Khaiyum said the aircraft will increase frequencies and help go to new destination.

The reality is with the ar-rival of the new aircraft and with the frequency being in-creased to sustain jobs and creates new jobs, he said.

He believes the new air-craft will require more crew to come on board which means more engineers and more engineers means more catering and so this is a multipliers effect.

Fiji Airways Chairman Nalin Patel says this new air-craft comes at an important time for them.

It will contribute straight-away to our network, as we prepare to start direct ser-vices between Wellington and Nadi from June 25th on Thursdays and Sundays all year around, he said.

Mr Nalin adds the aircraft will also allow them to add an extra service from Christ-church, also making that a twice-weekly connection to Fiji all year round as wel.

Fiji Airways will also be able to add more daylight flights to Brisbane, as well as extra frequencies on Fiji Airways busy Auckland and Sydney routes.

He said with this addition to their fleet they become larger and stronger and will be able to further strengthen their position as the leader in aviation in the Pacific.

It aids us in develop-ing partnerships within the region, like the recently an-nounced codeshare with Air Vanuatu and partner-ships we are looking to put in place in Tonga, Mr. Patel added.

The Island of Ovalau will undertake its first flight on Friday May 28.

When tourist comes to Nadi Town, they should love and take lot of good memories about it, which is how welcom-ing our local stakeholders and most importantly our own local people.

These were the words of the Nadi Downtown Hotel & PVV TOURS Sales Director Chandar Prakash during his presentation at the Mini Business Forum in Fiji National University Namaka Campus in Nadi on May 22nd.

Mr Prakash believes there are certain things that need to be done to increase the number of tourist arriving in our shore on daily basis.

If we want tourist to come back and say nice things about Nadi Town then we should fulfill the expectation of a tourist, says Prakash.

The Bal Sanju Reddy coached side defeated Rewa 2-o in the finals at Prince Charles Park in Nadi.

Ravinesh Karan Singh scored the opener in the 29th minute of the first half and Taione Kere-vanua scored the second in the 82nd minute.

Labasa coach Bal San-ju Reddy said his team has proved that they are no less than any other team and they can be champions too.

We came into this tournament with 2-3 weeks preparation and were very determined to win and return home with the trophy. After winning the first game against Tailevu Naitasiri, we knew that were ca-pable of lifting the title

and the boys stuck to the game plan we had drawn for them and did not lose their focus and determi-nation.

We wanted to remain unbeaten in the tourna-ment and we managed to achieve this feat. The credit goes to all the play-ers for giving their best and also to the officials who believed in our aim and mission and support-ed us all throughout, he said.

This is Labasas fourth Fiji FACT title.

Coca Cola Extends Sponsorship Of Fiji International

Coca-Cola Amatil is committed to the devel-opment of all sports in Fiji and we were delighted with our partnership of the inaugural Fiji Inter-national in 2014. We are excited about extending the mutually beneficial partnership for this year.

These were the words of the Acting General Manager of Coca-Cola Amatil (Fiji) Neil Searan-ke after confirming they continued sponsorship of the Fiji International 2015 as the nations biggest sporting event.

Mr Searanke said the newest tournament on the PGA Tour of Austral-asia and OneAsia tours, hosted at Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course from October 15-18 was going to be even bigger and better this year.

Being a part of the nations biggest and rich-est sporting event which boasts such a strong ex-posure platform both lo-cally and internationally is important for our brand positioning, he said.

Searanke added one of their event activation

programs will be offering an exclusive 600ml Coca Cola and Fiji International joint branded pack which will be available at the event in October.

The inaugural Fiji In-ternational, boasting a million dollar prize purse, signaled Fijis of-ficial arrival onto the golf-ing world stage with the Fijian Government, Fiji Tourism and Fijis num-ber one golf ambassador, Vijay Singh, all making a push to put their country on the lucrative world golfing map.

It was not only a great golf event, but also an op-portunity to showcase Fiji as a premier cultural, lei-sure and sporting destina-tion with a diverse range of activities and attrac-tions. 120 players from 16 different countries came together at the spectacu-lar Natadola Bay Cham-pionship Golf Course to take on the challenging layout, designed by lo-cal hero Vijay Singh, to compete in the regions first ever internationally broadcast tournament.

Hitting the very first tee shot of the Fiji Inter-national, Steven Jeffress went on to make history by sinking the last putt of the tournament as he birdied the 18th hole to claim the title by four
