THE JESSE TREE During the Advent season, the Church anticipates the coming of Jesus through readings

that span from the Old Testament creation story through Jesus’ birth. Jesse, for whom

the tree is named, is the first person in the genealogy of Jesus. At the top of this

family tree are Mary and Jesus. Depicted in church windows and artwork for hundreds of

years, this visual tree of life may even have been a forerunner of today’s Christmas

tree.

All you need for this project is a large bare branch on which to hang Jesse tree orna-

ments. Each day, go to our parish website (www.sttheresechesva.org), and read the

reflection for the day on our

“virtual” Jesse Tree

(www,StThereseChesVa.org). Then,

cut out the ornament for the day,

color it, and — if you’d like —

decorate it with colorful cloth or

ribbon. Attach a ribbon, and tie it

on to a branch of your Jesse Tree.

Sharing the Jesse tree story is a

great way to help build anticipation

for the birth of the Christ child,

allowing the roots of faith to take

hold and grow!

1. Cut out the

circle for that

day.

2. Look up (and read) the Bible

story that explains the picture

3. Color your ornament, and add

a string or colorful ribbon

or string.

4. Tie the ribbon to your Jesse

Tree, and pray the prayer.
