Jarrett Update
Last year’s pilot project, Study Spaces, has gotten off to a great start this
year! It is not only a place for kids who need to catch up with their work after school, but is also creating a culture of
learning outside the classroom. It has been great to witness kids
encouraging each other to get their work done! Thank you to
all the teachers and counselors who are on hand to help our keiki strive for the highest!

This is the last week of the quarter and some students need to do some last minute pushing
to increase their grades.
We have cancelled teacher meetings this week, so that
teachers are available in their classrooms after school to work
with students who are failing one or more of their classes. If
your child has an F, please partner with us by making sure
your child stays in school until 3 pm to work with their teachers
to raise their grade. You can even call the school to confirm that your child has stayed to
get help.
Any students who have grades of D, C, B, or A are also
welcomed to spend time striving to be extraordinary after school
this week to better their grades. These students should report to the media center for
STUDY SPACES.
Thank you teachers for helping students cross the finish line for
Quarter 1!

Kūlia hosts volunteer tutors One of the key components of our partner After-
School All-Stars’ Kūlia program is homework hour. Through another partner program, Pālolo Pipeline, we have been able to place volunteer
college tutors with our students during homework hour. This not only provides
additional academic help to our students, it also provides inspirational live examples of learners
who continue to learn beyond high school. If you haven’t enrolled your child in the Kūlia program, you can still do so at anytime. You can visit our
website to download the form!
• As he walked onto campus after the warning bell rang, 7th grader, Kingston saw a student's papers flying all over the yard. Kingston did not hesitate to stop and help the student pick up his papers. Thank you Kingston for being an extra-ordinary JMS student!
• 8th grader Akomi decided to sweep a teacher’s class on her own during lunch. Small pieces of paper were littered all over the floor and the tops of tables from morning classes where students had created paper rockets for Challenger. Although Akomi was told not to worry about it and to enjoy her lunch, she insisted on sweeping the floor and clearing the tables. Thank you for being a caring responsible student Akomi!
• After a Challenger activity, a teacher left a table outside of the classroom. After school, Peter noticed the table was still outside the classroom and took initiative to ask the teacher if he and Xylan could help put it back into the classroom. Thank you Peter and Xylan!
• On September 20th, the JMS band was playing at the KHS Homecoming game. During the second quarter it started to rain really hard. Band members and the equipment got soaked! Dr. R decided to leave early and had the students pack up. Some students were allowed to go home with their parents. The others needed to carry those students' equipment. Kanoa and Kellen volunteered to help carry three loads of very heavy band equipment from the stands all the way around the field on the track to the bus that was waiting on Houghtailing Street. This in itself was an extraordinary act, but the fact that they did it in the pouring, driving rain makes it Extra-Extraordinary! Mahalo Kellen & Kanoa!!!
The JMS Foundation Annual Fundraising Dinner and Silent Auction will be held on Saturday,
November 16, 2019 at the Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii, Manoa Grand Ballroom. Tickets are $70 per person. Donations of items for the silent auction
are welcome. All proceeds go to benefit student programming!
Extraordinary Acts Fall See’s Fundraiser a Success! A Big Mahalo to all who helped us fund raise
last month. The results are in, and we hit 200%+ of our goal for school-wide activities!
Become a Reading Superhero!
AR Achievement
Ms. Irion’s 6th Grade class has done it
again! All students in her homeroom
either met or exceeded their
quarter 1 AR goal! Congratulations on helping each other
achieve this EXTRAORDINARY
goal!
During fall break, all Teen Biz (Achieve3000) and AR Reading will count toward your child’s Quarter 2 goal. We encourage you to support your child’s continued reading development throughout the break by taking them to the library and going onto www.Achieve3000 daily.
If your child is able to complete their Teen Biz article goal during fall break, he/she would be able to focus for the rest of the quarter on completing their Accelerated Reading goal!
