Spring Drive to Galena & Lake Geneva
This years Spring Drive will take us through Northwestern Illinois and South Central Wis-consin.
We will depart Saturday morning, May 5th, from Hanover Park, Illinois. The Village has given us permission to use a parking lot just north of Lake Street (Route 20) on Barrington Road. We will assemble between 9 and 10 AM. and drive to Freeport, Illinois. Stopping for lunch in Freeport and then visit the Fossil Win-ery. Then we are on our way to Galena, arriv-ing mid afternoon. You should have a few hours in the afternoon to walk Main Street.
Our hotel, right on Main Street, is the De Soto House, the oldest operating hotel in Illinois opened in 1855. Dinner will be at One Eleven, a few steps from our hotel.
Sunday morning will be an early departure at 8 AM with our first stop at the Historic Auto Museum in Rockton, Illinois. From the muse-um we will drive through southern Wisconsin stopping in Fontana, at the western edge of Lake Geneva.
We will have a buffet lunch at Chuck's, a Lake Geneva institution, that overlooks the lake. Af-ter lunch we will drive to Williams Bay. There we will receive a private tour of Yerkes Obser-vatory, a 77 acre facility built in 1897, now part of the University of Chicago's Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics. After the tour, weather permitting, you will be able to drive on the lawn and photograph your car in front of Yerkes.
We will leave Yerkes mid afternoon and drive just a few miles into Lake Geneva. At this point, planned activities end and you can head home or stay over in Lake Geneva and enjoy Sunday night and Monday on your own.

Lunch & a Movie, Feb 26th This was a new event that Dan Cusick put together. It was prob-ably the first time we have done any kind of event in the month of February! Who wants to go out in February anyway, especially with a Jaguar.
It worked out nice for me, I was driving into town that weekend from Michigan, my son was out of school that week so he hitched a ride with me and got stuck go-ing to a movie with dad.
This was a really interesting change from the normal movie theater. I still look back at thea-ters that went out of business years ago in my home town and then come here to find a totally different venue. I hope they do well with it.
The lobby area was more like a bar. Actually it had a long bar and a few pool tables , a bunch of TV screens all over and they served food. Just like a bar. But around the place was 8 or so doors to the dif-ferent theaters.
Inside the theater there were the normal seats like all the other theaters and in the back were the really neat seats. Large oversized lounge chairs with a table for your drink. A pillow and blanket were there for you too. They provided free popcorn and
brought you drinks or food if you desired. I really liked this setup and hope to get back there again with my wife for Date Night.

Jaguars in Old Movies/Silver Streak 1976 One of my all time favorite movies, brings back a lot of memories especially when it comes to Jaguar E-types.
Silver Streak came out in 1976, I was a high school junior looking for my first car to call my own. I was originally look-ing at 63 split window Corvettes, Lotus Europa's, Amphicars and E-Types.
I used to pick up the Trading Times newspaper and look for cars for sale then circle the ads and leave on the din-ing room table for my dad. I can still hear him saying “ You’re not getting a damm Jaguar”
Well one night mom and dad went to see Silver Streak, they never really said much about the movie but mom did mention something later about the part when Richard Pryor (Grover Muldoon) called the E-Type “Pure Pussy”. I just smiled. Weeks later dad gave in and we went into Chicago to look at an E-type. Bought it and I’ve been hooked ever since.
I was surprised by some of the online reviews that it got. The critics didn't think much of it. Non critics (normal people) on Amazon loved it. If you haven't seen it, now might be the time to order it on Netflix or buy it on Amazon. I think its one of the funnier Pryor/Wilder movies that were made.
An Online movie review: Silver Streak, the train which travels from LA to Chi-cago and houses a murder, dawdles ra-ther than streaks. Characters and plot ramble at will, and no matter how high Colin Higgins' script flies, Arthur Hiller's direction remains with feet and hands firmly on the ground. Wilder, who wit-nesses the foul deed, keys his perfor-mance to the right pitch of muted mad-ness ('You like my new shoes?' he asks, stretched out on the heroine's bed). Clayburgh is a real sweetie, and Pryor isn't too far behind as a black dude thief. On the debit side, the fooling occasion-ally gets too boisterous for its own good; but it's rare enough to find a film de-signed to provide fun on a spectacular
scale that succeeds even part of the time.
From the NY times: "Silver Streak" is the sort of comedy that leaves you ex-hausted, though not from laughing.
The film, which is set mostly aboard a Los Angeles-to-Chicago train and has to do with art forgers, cops and innocent bystanders, works its cast so relentlessly, with so little real good humor and at such apparent expense and trouble, that it wears you out with the tension that comes from watching good people make idiots of themselves.
My favorite scenes:
[Grover (Richard Pryor) is attempting to hot wire a Jaguar]
Grover Muldoon: I'm following the plan. Just changed my mind. George Caldwell: Are you crazy? I thought we were gonna take the Chevy in back. Grover Muldoon: Chevy? That's a jerk-off, man. This here is pure pussy. George Caldwell: Pure pussy? Tell that to the judge. Grover Muldoon: Don't worry about
no judge, Man, this thing gonna get us to Kansas City on time. George Caldwell: How about jail? Did you know that the office is right in front of us?
At the end of the movie after the train crash-es thru Union Station:
[a cop is about to give Grover Muldoon a ride]
Cop: Where would you like to go, fella? Grover Muldoon: Well - I left my Jag in Kansas City.
