The Jerusalem Scene

• Jerusalem:– More than 50% of all art and design students

learn their craft here– HUJI has an excellent CS department, and a

developing engineering program– Other institutes train students in relevant areas

But:• Not enough jobs for these students in Jerusalem• Many (most) leave the city after graduation• It is difficult to get them to come back here later

So what kind of Lab?

Lab Models

• Academic Research Lab– Accreditation: By the hosting institution– Funding: Mixture of Internal, Public and Industry money– Generates IP and Spin-offs

• Private Research Lab– Public and Private funding– Runs workshops and hired research– Generates IP and Spin-offs

• Industrial Research Lab– Mostly Internal Funding. – Generates IP and future product ideas. Less interested in Spin-

offs.• Art Lab:

– Private donations, public funding (i.e. NEA). – Less interested in IP or Spin-offs.

The Most Successful Model

• MIT Media Lab:– Good funding, people,

innovation generating IP (100+ patents) and Spin-offs (58+), great visibility, and positive effects on the host city

– Had some hard years after the bubble burst but seems to be on the rebound.

• Others have succeeded too, but not as much as the media lab on so many fronts.

• Philosophy:

• We believe that the gestalt that is created when such people work together will be larger than what any one of these groups can achieve on their own.

We act under the belief that radical innovation can be enhanced and powered by the synergies generated in the mixture of researchers, engineers, designers and artists.

• Process: From Applied Research to a New Industry

Quality of Innovation - IP Generation - Spin-offs - Visibility - Effects on the hosting cityFunding - Finding excellent people - Management

• People: Finding Excellent People

– Researchers• Start Small then grow (5 researchers – 10- 20)• Enable 1 revolving slot for visiting researchers• Look for varied backgrounds • Use Zionism

– Students (work-study)*• For Pay (better than student pay, less than industry)• Exceptional First degree students or MA students• Hands On, Self Motivated, Self Learning, Can-do!

We will have a relationship with academic institutions in the city

(HUJI-CSE, Bezalel, Haddassa, etc)

• The Social Space:– Will create a collaborative atmosphere– Will ensure that all Lab people know what others are

doing – Will enable all Lab people to be actively involved (to

differing degrees) in other people’s projects– Will be comfortable and enable long hours

• Sofas, coffee, etc

• An Applied Research Focus:– From next year to 3* years in the future– Will be exciting, innovative and relevant– Will be applicable for commercialization– Can be in any area that utilizes the strengths available

in Jerusalem

Entertainment (content, technologies, interfaces) NewsTraining and Education AutomotiveSecurity Mobile ComputingPervasive Computing Ecommerce etc…

• An Applied Research Focus: e.g.– New Game Interfaces – New Mobile Game Interaction Models (i.e. gestures,

vision, AI, location, etc)– Smart Objects (e.g. cubes that know what they spell

and react accordingly)– Smarter “smart” phones (minimizing disruption)– Physical – Ecommerce (Amazon-on-Earth)– And more…

• The Physical Space:– Will be in the center of Jerusalem– Will have enough space for:

• Researcher Rooms• Student Rooms (2 per room)• Central Lab Space (“where its happening!”)• Lecture room (2)• Work Shop (electronics, wood, etc)• Equipment Room• Server Room• Coffee corner• Shower
