Annual Report 2014

Our Vision: An essential, innovative community service for people of all ages and backgrounds, contributing to our quality of

life, affirming our sense of community and our spirit of optimism and discovery.

Our Mission: The Kenora Public Library endeavours to enrich lives and to build our community by ensuring universal access

to resources for inspiration, enjoyment, cultural expression, and the pursuit of lifelong learning.

"When I say to a parent, ‘read to a

child’, I don't want it to sound like

medicine. I want it to sound like

chocolate." ~ Mem Fox ~

(author & literacy specialist)

The Ivy Camire Seed Library

has been launched to allow

a free and open exchange of

seeds grown and harvested

by local gardeners. Users

can bring in flower and/or

vegetable seeds from their

own gardens and pick out

seeds that are being shared,

through the library, by their

Kenora neighbours. The

library was established in

honour of the late Ivy

Camire who had shared her

own knowledge and love of

gardening with our

community. Stop in at the

Kenora Branch Library and

see what is available for this

year’s garden. Better yet,

plan on donating some of

your own plant seeds too!

There’s no such thing as a kid who hates reading. There are kids who love reading, and kids who are

reading the wrong books. ~ James Patterson ~

There were 88 children who joined the TD Sum-

mer Reading Club. Above are two happy young

prize winners from the Summer Reading Club.

Prizes were funded by the Rotary Club of

Kenora. Whether they are being read to by

parents, caregivers, or siblings, or reading to

themselves, they are able to collect minutes

that are rewarded with prize entries for the end

of summer draws.

297 children took part in the Library’s weekly story hours.

A dozen special/seasonal programs were held and were

enjoyed by 107 people.

381 children attended the library with 25 day care visits.

260 kids came to the library with 19 school visits.

The Children’s Library is able to host a number of Children’s

Programs each year in partnership with the Best Start Hub.

Library staff and board members read stories and hosted craft

activities for the children participating in Relay for Life in June

2014.

Weekly craft activities await for little ones wanting to make use

of the children’s library mini maker spaces.

Library staff reach out to students, parents and teachers

through attendance at school open houses and meetings.

In addition to regular desktop computers, the Kenora Branch of

the library has a ‘Discovery Center’ for children under ten. It

was used more than 2,400 times in 2014!

3,054 of the library’s collection of interactive ‘Tumblebooks’

were used and enjoyed by kids in our community.

The library’s online collection of

Flipster titles includes Cricket and

Odyssey. Both are magazines for

kids ages 9 and over.

Special thanks to the following Book Clubs:

Monday November 10th 2014 marked the fourth annual Kenora Public Library Giller Gala. A sold-out crowd enjoyed an evening

of food, fun and friends at the Best Western Inn and Conference Centre. The evening was a wonderful celebration of Canadian

books and authors. Six local celebrities skillfully “defended” one of the titles nominated for the 2014 Giller Award. Several tasty

appetizer courses were served followed by a scrumptious pumpkin roll cake. Guests were able to watch the live TV event on a

giant screen television. The evening concluded with draws for prizes that had been donated by a great many library supporters.

Our Giller Committee is already hard at work planning Giller Gala 2015. Tickets will go on sale in the fall.

Workers from the NeChee Friendship Centre

regularly borrow a collection of books that they read

to a growing group of interested residents at Birch-

wood each week.

A library volunteer continues scanning and compress-

ing the local newspapers to be added to the Library’s

Digital Archive. Special thanks to Mr. Ray Baker for

his great and ongoing support of this great collection.
