The first people that lived on Ugljan are the Liburnians, an Illyrian tribe. In the

4th century BC they built settlements on the hills, whose remains are still visible today.

The Romans colonized the island in the 1st century BC and built the countryside villas (villae rusticae). In the Middle Ages, the Croats settled on the island, as evidenced by the remains of stone interlace ornaments, churches and a number of toponyms.

In the 15th century the island comes under the rule of the Venetian Republic until the fall of the Monarchy. Venetian rule than bows to Napoleonic conquests after which the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy settles in until 1918. Henceforth, the island becomes an integral part of Croatia.

The sunny islandof secluded bays

and irresistible

beaches

Some are shallow and sandy, some gravel and some rocky with natural stone slabs for

sunbathing... Although relatively small, the island of Ugljan abounds with a variety of beaches situated in many picturesque bays along the coastline of the island. The most popular beaches are located in the southern part of the island, facing Dugi Otok and protected from the Bora wind. Because of their diversity and beauty, irresistible charm and intimacy, you may find yourself in a dilemma when it comes to picking the right beach for you.The entire island is one beach, which transforms from secluded to intimate, to nudist to the one astir with crowd, fun and red-hot summer rhythms.Whether you select a quiet and secluded cove or a sandy rhapsody, one thing is certain, you have chosen your place under the sun.

Certainly the most beautiful description of the legendary Zadar sunset has been written by the famous film

director Alfred Hitchcock during his visit to Zadar in May 1964. Watching the sunset behind the island of Ugljan from the window of room 204 in Hotel Zagreb, he wrote the following: “Sunset in Zadar is the most beautiful in the world and is much nicer than the one in Key West, Florida.”
