14th of June 1982: Argentine forces on the Falkland Islands surrender.
Led Britain in the Falklands War
In 1982, when Argentina invaded the Falkland Islands, Thatcher responded aggressively, authorizing the sinking of an Argentine cruiser in which more than 300 Argentine sailors died. After Argentina surrendered, Thatcher declared that Britain then had a “new spirit” of strength and her popularity at home soared. “Things cannot be the same again,” she said at the time. “For we have learned something about ourselves . . . a lesson which we desperately needed to learn. When we started out, there were the waverers and the faint-hearts. The people who thought that Britain could no longer seize the initiative for herself.”

Helps to end the Cold War
Her diplomacy and friendship with Gorbachev combined with her influence over President Reagan that meant talks were started to end the Cold War. Therefore, not only did she save Britain from becoming a third-world satellite state of the Soviet Union, together with Reagan she hastened the end of the Soviet Empire without starting any actual wars and helped to promote new thinking in the Kremlin.
