Message from the Author… I am happy to share with you a tool that will provide everything you need to know when using the iPad in the classroom. This handbook begins with the iPad basics. This section will allow you to become familiar with all the buttons, functions and applications that come standard with an iPad. I also included the vocabulary and the definitions associated with the iPad. I then explain QR codes, and show examples of how powerful they can be in the classroom. At the end of this handbook, I included a list of apps that I use with my students. As you may already know, the amount of apps out there are endless. I have only included the apps that I have used successfully. However, this being said, this list grows and changes over time. If you are working on a special project and are looking for apps in a specific topic, feel free to contact me as I may be able to suggest one. You have permission to make copies of this handbook for your own personal classroom use. It would be greatly appreciated if you acknowledge my work. I hope you enjoy using “The iPad in the Elementary Classroom: From Mission Impossible to Mission Possible” handbook. Joey Lento [email protected]

Tips and Tricks Students: Stay on this App!! Want to keep your students working on one app without venturing out to other apps? Follow these steps:

1. Select Settings 2. General 3. Accessibility 4. Guided Access, and swipe button. It will turn green.

Then Click “Set Passcode” and create a 4 digit password you will have to remember.

- Now that Guided Access is enabled, you can open an app you would like the

students to work on, and hit the home button three consecutive times. - Select “Start” to begin Guided Access. - To end Guided Access, hit the home button three times, enter your

password. You can then Resume, or end guided access.

Apple 30 pin adapter

iPad Accessories for the classroom

Dewey document camera stand This stand allows you to transform your iPad into a document camera. When your iPad is snapped in the “Dewey document stand”, it can rotate 90°, swivel and tilt while keeping your iPad secure. Similar to an overhead projector, a document camera allows you to project whatever you have on it to a screen or SmartBoard. In order for this stand to

work, you need a dongle wire to connect your iPad to a projector.

Pair your iPad with a Projector: A dongle A dongle is an adapter that connects your iPad to the VGA of your projector. There are two versions of this adapter. The iPad dock connector will determine if you need the older version (30 pin to VGA adapter), or the newer version (Lightning

to VGA adapter). This adapter will allow your class to see the apps you are using on the iPad on a big screen. For best quality, it is recommended that you use Apple

products. The 30 pin adapter runs for about $35, and the lightning adapter runs for about $50. Belkin- Flip USB with Audio KVM Switch

This is a very useful adapter to have in the classroom. It allows you to connect your iPad Dongle, and your computer to this adapter, and one wire is directly connected to your SmartBoard or projector and your speakers. At a flip of the switch, you can go from iPad to computer on your screen without touching any of your wires. Best investment, after purchasing the dongle! Belkin sells it for $40 US, and amazon.ca for about $45CDN.

Griffin Survivor iPad case: Protect your school’s iPad investment with this Griffin Survivor iPad case. This military grade case absorbs shocks and drops up to 6 feet, protects against rain, wind or whatever your day has in store. A flip frame stand is also integrated in the design. Stylus: A stylus is a writing tool that can be used on an iPad instead of using a finger. It is

great to teach students how to properly use a writing tool like a pencil or crayon. There are different models available. Some look and feel like pens or pencils, others like a crayon. Bluetooth Keyboard

A Bluetooth keyboard can be linked with an iPad wirelessly. This can help students and teachers that have difficulty using the tactile keyboard on the ipad.

iPad Storage

Bretford PowerSync Tray for iPad

This Power Sync tray is great for storing, charging and syncing 10 iPads. Only one wire is connected to a computer, and another to a power outlet. Green and orange lights indicate if the iPad is fully charged or still needs to be charged. It comes with a durable combination lock. You can also connect multiple trays together (up to 30 iPads, 1

USB to the computer). There is a security lid that locks into place to protect the iPads.

The Dish Rack iPad Tray A homemade version of keeping your iPads together is using a dish rack. Use Tie Wraps to lock the Power Bar in place. iPads then stand in place in the dish rack and are plugged in power bar.

BretFord PowerSync Cart for iPad This Cart is ideal for 30 iPads. Only one USb connects to the computer and one wire connects to power outlet. On the top of the cart it indicates which iPads are fully

charged with a green light, and those that still need charging with an orange light. Space for a laptop on top of cart for easy syncing.

QR Codes

What is a QR Code? QR code is the abbreviation from Quick Response Code. It is a digital image similar to a bar code that can be scanned with an iPad, iPod, or a Smartphone using a QR reader app. Internet is required for it to work.

1. To start you need to download one of many free QR reader apps from the App Store.

2. Once downloaded, open the app. Similar to taking a picture, hold the iPad over the QR code so that the QR code is in the camera box.

3. When the camera recognizes the code, the iPad will direct you to a destination like a website, video, picture, via the Internet.

QR Generators

You can create your very own QR code! There are many free websites that allow you to create your QR codes that you can link a website, text, videos, maps, voice recordings, etc.. www.qrstuff.com – allows you to create a QR code in any color

qrvoice.net – allows you to type a message (up to 100 characters), that transforms to an electronic voice QR code. When students scan the code, they will hear the message you typed.

http://vocaroo.com Allows you to record your voice on this site, or you can upload a voice file. When you are satisfied with your recording, you are given a link. This link can be used to create a QR code on a site like www.qrstuff.com. It is as easy as copy and paste.

http://www.classtools.net/QR Enter multiple questions and answers, and it will generate multiple QR codes that can be printed and hidden in your class for students to find, scan, and answer.

www.visualead.com Allows you to create a QR code with an image around it (as seen on pg. 14 of this handbook).

Bitly.com – Shortens a website so people don’t have to type the entire website link. Simply copy paste the website on this site and it will generate a short link that will direct you to the same location.

Page 15: The iPad in the Elementary Classroomjstokesportfolio.weebly.com/uploads/.../the_ipad_in... · The iPad allows you to easily access some if its options by an upward swipe on the bottom

14

How can I use QR codes in my class? Simple QR Generator: This is an application that you can download on your Google Chrome

web browser on your computer. Once installed, at a click of an icon on your address bar, a QR code appears on your screen. Students can scan this code with their iPad and it will direct them to the website that you are on. To download this application just type “Simple QR Code Generator” in Google search when using Google Chrome.

Math – Multi-Step Word Problems: Students can self-correct their work. They can walk around the class, solve the problem with the goal of showing all their work. They can correct using the QR code, and try again if they are incorrect.

Fraction Jenga: This is a free PDF created by “FlapJack

Educational Resources” on “Teachers pay Teachers”. It is a self-checking resource containing 54 labels to adhere to Jenga blocks to use in the game Jenga or simply as building blocks. Each label has a fraction problem along with a QR code answer that can be scanned to check students' accuracy. If student answer is correct they can use it to build a tower, wrong they have to place their block back in the pot. Tallest tower wins!

qrvoice.net: Have the students create an art piece and then have them type a caption or title for their work. This site will automatically create a QR, just click and print. When scanned with a QR reader, you will hear the caption with an electronic voice. http://vocaroo.com: Like the idea of qrvoice.net but want to hear the student’s voice instead? Then use this site! Record the students singing a song and include the QR code in the card for parents to hear. You can upload a file or record directly on the site.

Physical Education: A teacher posted posters like this image in the gym. Students scanned the QR codes to understand the activity they needed to perform in their station. Each station had three levels of physical activities and the QR code was linked to a video of how to do them properly.

Other Ideas: Teachers can also use QR codes on homework sheets that can link students to a website that will help them complete their work. You can use QR codes on student work to explain the thinking behind the work. QR codes at “Meet the Teacher” night to give information, class website, newsletters, etc… Have Qr codes linked to videos or sound recordings of students explaining class routines, directions, rules, safety directions, etc.. The possibilities are endless.

Internet Browsers

The Power of Google Drive in the Classroom Google drive is an online tool that can store photos, videos, documents, presentations and other files. It is similar to Microsoft Office, but everything is stored and saved online. Therefore, teachers and students can access their information from anywhere.

A struggle that teachers often have is the ability to

print word documents that students worked on in an iPad. Having students working in Google Drive allows them to use an app on the iPad that is similar to Word and PowerPoint, and have them print their work when they access it on a computer.

Google Drive can also be a collaborative tool where multiple students can

work on the same document from different computers and/or iPads. A teacher can also log onto Google Drive on the computer that is connected to a SmartBoard or projector, and have a student work on the same Google Drive document on an iPad. This would allow the class to see what the student is working on.
