IBM is a leader in building and running practical IoT applications for the enterprise, investing $3 billion over the next four years to establish a new IoT business unit

IBM IoT Cloud Open Platform for IndustriesNew analytics services that clients, partners and IBM will use to design and deliver vertical industry IoT solutions

New IoT services within IBM’s Bluemix Enabling developers to easily integrate IoT data into cloud-based development and deployment of IoT apps

Expansion of its ecosystem of IoT partnersFrom silicon and device manufacturers to industry-oriented solution providers

IBM CredentialsNode-Red – Created by IBM, Open-source – Visual coding tool for ‘wiring together flows’. Cuts

down time needed to pull together hardware devices, API’s and online services.

IBM Bluemix – Created by IBM – Open Standards Cloud platform that allows for building, running and managing apps

and services. Easy to use.

MQTT – Co-Developed by IBM – Open Standards, Lightweight Messaging Protocol for small sensors. Optimized for

high latency and unreliable networks.

IBM Academic Initiative

• Help speed up development and delivery cycles.

• Stepping stone for delivering scalable, interoperable, secure solutions.

IBM Internet of Things

IBM Foundation + ARM mBedStarter Kit•Automatically connect to IBM Foundation Cloud

•Features sensors such as – Accelerometer, Temperature, Potentiometer.

•Connects via Ethernet – Wi-Fi version available Jan 2016.

•Data displayed over web-browser.

•Provides platform for learning new concepts + rapidly creating working prototypes.

IBM Internet of Things

Improved the performance and reliability of its appliances.

Accesses and analyzes telematics and biometric data from its boats and pilots to make real-time racing decisions

Developing fully-connected mobile vehicle solutions with IBM

IBM is working with a broad range of global clients to build practical IoT applications for the enterprise

What is it?IBM + Academic Initiative

16

• Unique, no-charge program to help teach students market-ready skills.

• Helps develop world-class curriculum

• Skill-building opportunities ranging from IBM and ecosystem events to student competitions

• Help foster ‘digital-savvy’ talent

Why is IBM doing this?Internet of Things + Academic Initiative

17

• Explosion of IOT = Need for students to learn how BlueMix can enable innovation

• Access to open-standards allows students to tackle critical skills

• Increased time offering allows students to explore various programming languages

• Students gain innovation ‘hands-on’, cloud based experience.

• Allows for students to realise and exploit innovative and new solutions.

Bluemix to the Edge of Space

-Third year project – Send balloon to edge of space.

-Balloon is attached to collection of sensors and cameras – Recording and sending data back to earth.

Ground Control -> Probe

- Data is then tweeted

Probe -> Ground Control

- Sensors collecting - altitude, light, temperature (internal/external), movement.

- Using MQ Light, Internet of Things Foundation, Node-RED, Cloudant services all running on Bluemix.

The probes status/location/encountered conditions will be:

1. Distributed via Twitter2. Represented physically in the IBM Hursley Innovation Center (messaging control of lights etc)3. Represented virtually by a digital avatar4. Shown in real-time on Google Maps for anyone to follow5. The data will be stored on Cloudant, so can be replayed at any time, after the event.
