the international centre for connecting vehicles, highways and telecommunications
TRANSCRIPT
The International Centre for Connecting Vehicles, Highways and Telecommunications
The Opportunity
• Telematics-based technology key to delivering solutions to growing societal transport related challenges.– Safety– Efficiency– Environment– Security
• Currently there is not a single-site ITS test facility in Europe which is– Safe– Secure– Reference– Robust
The Potential• European Automotive Telematics industry growing at
17% per year with R&D budgets estimated to be worth €1.85billion a year by 2010
• Related telematics R&D budgets in Highways and Telecoms industries conservatively predicted at €0.75billion a year by 2010
• European ITC Framework 7 budget is €9.1 billion with €105 million currently allocated to CVHS R&D under challenge 6
The Vision• To establish a sustainable and internationally recognised
ITS Development centre which will promote research, development & innovation leading to new products, standards and services in the area of Cooperative Vehicle and Highway Systems.
• To provide a platform for marketing and promotion of European ITS technology solutions / providers within the global ITS market to stimulate investment in these European organisations
How Will This Be Achieved ?
• Being first to market with a centre to test, develop and demonstrate cooperative vehicle highway systems on one site
• Providing the required test tracks, infrastructure and equipment to reproduce the numerous telematics scenarios essential to new product innovation and development
• Providing a solid platform to attract collaborative and commercial R&D
Telematics Centre - Overview
• €30M Project– Project 1 - City Circuit– Project 2 - Customer demonstration suite and control
centre– Project 3 - High speed handling & manoeuvres circuit– Project 4 - Motorway– Project 5 - Free-form dynamics platform

Why at MIRA ?
• MIRA offers a cost effective solution due to the extent of its existing infrastructure
• MIRA has a strong internationally recognised reputation which will help to establish the centre’s credibility quickly
• MIRA houses a major proving ground and an array of additional leading edge facilities, such as EMC, to augment the centre’s services to customers.
• The Telematics Centre will be able to leverage MIRA’s existing skills and expertise in Telematics R&D and other areas
Who Benefits ?• Automobile Manufacturers
– Provides ‘One Stop Shop’ for certifying ITS systems– Safe and controlled real-world ITS environment– Ability to evaluate multiple-vehicle interactions– Pedestrian and other road user test scenarios– Access to UK existing world-class facilities & services– Enables focus on engineering rather than test scenario creation
• European Tier 1 Suppliers– Access to secure shared-use facility with better features– Neutral independent location for collaborative research/problem
solving between potentially competing organisations
• Standards and Certification– Development and updating of ITS standards.
