Like many other companies in the tool and mold construction sector, Büsser Formenbau AG must continuously develop. The pressure from overseas competition is immense, and one of the keys to success is automation in order to lower costs and reduce throughput times. This enables companies to remain profitable and competitive.
Büsser realized this early on and initiated a project with this in mind. At this point, it was important to Büsser to share its own thoughts with knowledgeable external experts in order to bring fresh ideas into the company. The obvious step was to seek the advice of the experts at CERTA Systems GmbH in order to critically ex-amine the company‘s own thoughts and ideas.
INTEGRATION — THE KEY TO SUCCESSThe project kicked off with a project analysis in order to identify the company‘s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and risks as well as its visions. Following the analysis stage, it was evident that automation could not be achieved without a suitable, universal software solution for process organization. The suitable strategy was defined together with the company‘s qua-lified employees. To ensure the implementation was a success, Mr Büsser believed in the importance of incor-porating the employees‘ technical competence and many years of experience into the project. The central, database-oriented solution for pro-cess automation from CERTA forms the new core of its production processes. Following the installation of the new process control techno-logy, the first step was to connect the existing
CAD/CAM system from CIMATRON to the central system by means of the CERTA CAD import and the CERTA QMeasure CAD plug-in. This enabled the direct transfer of existing data structures, defined measuring points for automatic pre-setting and automatic quality measurement of electrodes and workpieces, as well as vertical eroding parameters from the CIMATRON system to the CERTA system.
The part that is to be measured on the 3D co-ordinate measuring machine from Mitutoyo is identified by means of a chip, the measu-ring program is automatically set up by CERTA QMeasure, and the measurement is carried out automatically. During the initial phase, the Mikron HSC milling machine and the Zimmer & Kreim vertical eroding machine were connected to the central process control system from CER-TA Systems. The perfected and automated work flow delivers high levels of safety, flexibility and efficiency in production. The second phase in-volved fitting the newly purchased HSC milling machine from exeron with a CERTA JobManager and chip identification, and integrating it into the CERTA system.
SIGNIFICANT INCREASE IN SAFETYBüsser has taken a huge step forward thanks to this project. The sub-processes are now con-sistently organized and automated. Thanks to the central process control system from CERTA, up-to-date data is always available at the right time, in the right place and on the right machine. Ma-nual input has been minimized and the company has seen a huge reduction in the error rate.
HIGH DEMANDS TO BE BETTERBüsser Formenbau AG was founded in 1984 and is a typical small-sized company. It cur-rently has ten employees and is one of today‘s technical market leaders. Its reputation for high quality and precision stretches far beyond na-tional borders. In order to meet the high de-mands of its customers, the company offers consultancy services for the design and ma-nufacturing of high-precision injection molds as well as complex components (mold inserts, cores and electrodes).
