MALARIA DAY DEMONSTRATES COMMITMENT TO PATIENTS WITH MALARIA

Malaria Day 2015: Awareness CampaignIn honor of the World Malaria Day on April 25, 2015, Global Health R&D (Biopharma in collaboration with Life Science) hosted a worldwide ‘Malaria’ internal event to raise awareness about the tropical disease and current efforts and commitment of Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, to develop integrated antimalarial solutions. More than 2,000 pictures of employees demonstrating their support for malaria patients were collected from six continents.

A major gap in the spectrum of the prevention and treatment of malaria exists and we are focused on helping to fill this gap by developing antimalarials for the most vulnerable popuations in need.

- BELÈN GARIJO | Member of the Executive Board & CEO Healthcare, Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany

Malaria Day 2016: Engagement CampaignFor the World Malaria Day on April 25, 2016, Global Health engaged the employees to demonstrate their support by raising internal funds dedicated to buy pediatric goods for a public hospital in Africa. More than 2,600 employees took part in this event to show their support for children with malaria, leading to the donation of 20 hospital beds and 80 bulk of mosquito nets to the ‘Bishop Edward Michaud Memorial Health Centre' in Kinondoni District of Dar Es Salaam in Tanzania. At the end of the event, a Company’s ambassador was randomly selected amongst the participants to represent Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, on the day of the donation.

Ambassador, Anna Carolina Melo (Import/Export Analyst, Supply Network Operations, in Brazil) representing the Company at the

Malaria Donation Event in November 2016 alongside with Stefan Maron (Managing Director South East Africa), Godfrey Matata (General

Manager East Africa) and Beatrice Greco (Head of Malaria and Diagnostics Innovation Cluster – Global Health R&D).

"Actions toward improving the health of the poorest populations in the world are an example to be followed. This is a huge benefit for the children and families of Tanzania, who suffer daily with the ills of disease and lack of resources. Our work is directly linked to health, but experiences like this demonstrate how the patient is the reason for everything we do!"

Anna Carolina Melo
