WHAT IS TYPE 1 DIABETES?• Affects the pancreas• Islet cells stop producing
insulin• Insulin is not a cure• One of the most chronic
diseases in American children
• 5 - 10 % of all diagnosed cases of diabetes are type 1
• 80 people per day are diagnosed in USA
Diet:• 3 meals daily • Snacks between
meals• 15 servings of
carbohydrates
A healthy lunch:• 1 serving of protein• 4 servings of
carbohydrates• 1 vegetable or salad

in cafeteria, 4 could not, 3 were unsure• 6 could only purchase water from vending
machines• 1 believed vending machines had healthy
