2016 ISRT Midyear Report
Dear Fellow ISRT members,
I would first like to thank all of you for being members of the ISRT. I hope
that you are enjoying your time this Summer.
The board is still finalizing details for our annual conference. The conference
will be held on October 13th and 14th, at IU Kokomo. More details will follow
on the ISRT website and our FB page. Stay tuned!
I recently returned from attending the ASRT House of Delegates conference
in Las Vegas. (Next year it will be in sunny Orlando, Florida) It was a very
informative 3 days. If you ever get the chance to go, I highly recommend it.
At the conference, Indiana was well represented in the Student Leadership
Development Program with Stephanie Robles and Katelyn Diller.
Even though we have licensing in the State of Indiana for our profession,
you never know what might happen down the road. The ISRT is continually
monitoring any attempted changes to our licensure. This is just another
reason why all technologists should consider being a member of the ISRT. Become involved with the society.
Our membership numbers have declined considerably over the last several years. At this time, we have a total of 149
members. 83 Active/Limited/Supporting, 1 Retired, and 65 students. A far cry from 2005 when we had almost 1,000
members. I welcome any ideas members may have on what would help the ISRT attract new members, and retain
members that are currently part of the society.
What could the ISRT improve or implement to become considered a quality choice for membership? What do you
believe the ISRT does or could potentially do for you? I would like to hear from you. Please let me know what is on your
mind. Email me at [email protected] I am deeply concerned about the future of the ISRT.
The ISRT is dedicated to not only the technologists in Indiana, but also the STUDENTS. They are the future of our
profession.
I would like to thank the Board of Directors, for all of the work they have done over the last several months. They are all
dedicated and work hard for this organization.
Become involved with the ISRT. Run for an office, chair a committee, or be a committee member. There is strength in
numbers. With your help, we can continue the work of the ISRT. Join us!
Enjoy the rest of the summer, and I look forward to seeing you at the Annual Conference in October.
Respectfully,
Steve Cohen, RT(R)

The 2016 Henry Konecny, RT(R) Student Scholarships were awarded to three deserving radiography
students earlier this year. The purpose of the scholarships is to provide a cash award to assist in the
educational expenses of entry-level radiologic science students. Students applying for the
scholarship were required to submit an application and statement of why they believed they should
receive the award. A committee of ISRT members reviewed the applicant statements and judged them
on content (format, spelling, grammar, cohesion of thought, and rationale of receiving the
scholarship). Additionally, GPA and professional contribution and participation were also considered.
Scholarship recipients were:
Kris Murphy 1st Place (Indiana University Kokomo)
Katelyn Diller 2nd Place (Ball State University)
Korbin Myers 3rd Place (Ball State University)
Congratulations Kris, Katelyn, and Korbin! The ISRT wishes you success in your future as medical
imaging professionals!
The ISRT encourages all members to apply for the 2017 scholarships.
Andrew Boehm, B.S., RT (R ) is a clinical assistant professor
with Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne
and is this year’s ISRT Technologist Scholarship recipient.

On February 25, 2016 Representative Pete Olson (R-TX) introduced HR 4614, the Medicare
Access to Radiology Care Act of 2016. This bill provides for Medicare recognition of R.R.As certified
by ARRT and RPAs certified by CBRPA. Additional leading cosponsors of the bill are Representative
Dave Reichert (R-WA), Bill Pascrell (D-NJ), and Michael Doyle (D-PA).
A radiologist assistant is an advanced level radiographer who assists, but does not replace,
the radiologist in the diagnostic imaging environment. RAs must complete a rigorous academic
program, a radiologist-directed clinical preceptorship, and pass an ARRT examination.
The previous RA legislative bill, HR 1148, had 3 cosponsors from Indiana, Representative
Andre Carson, Susan Brooks, and Todd Young. I would encourage all Indiana RTs to email their
representative and ask for them to cosponsor this bill. After you email them, make sure to follow
up in a few weeks. Legislative aides are very busy people and juggle many requests so the follow
up is important. Don’t know where to start? The ASRT and ARRT have resources on their websites
to assist you in finding your representative, contact information for your representative, and what
to say in your letter or email. I am also willing to help with these efforts, whether it’s a meeting in
the district or help composing an email. I can be reached at [email protected].

EDUCATIONAL CONFERENCES & SEMINARS CAN’T HAPPEN WITHOUT VOLUNTEERS TO PLAN
AND HOST THEM
Don’t let these events FADE AWAY.
The ISRT depends on its membership to plan and host the Annual Conference and One
Day Seminars held throughout the year for the purpose of completing business and providing continuing education credits to its members. Without volunteers to organize and plan these events they would not happen. All committee members automatically
receive complimentary registration to the meeting. To show their appreciation for volunteering to Chair these events, the ISRT pays a commission as well as 10% of the profit which is over and above the budgeted profit amount set by the ISRT Financial
committee from the conference or seminar to the hosting individuals. The standard
commission amounts are:
Annual Conference $300 One Day Seminar $100
Guideline Manuals and mentors are available to help you through the planning process.
Please consider planning a future event.
The ISRT needs members like YOU to keep from FADING AWAY.
If you are interested in learning more about being a conference or seminar host, please
contact any member of the ISRT Board of Directors. Contact information can be found
on the ISRT website at www.isort.org or email [email protected].
NOTICE:
If there has been no volunteer who has
stepped forward to host the
annual conference by February 1st,
that year will be reduced to the
annual business meeting.

What is it like to work in a non-licensure state? Living in Missouri is great! I enjoy the rural atmosphere and easy living. Small towns
that are close enough to the large cities with a short drive. A nice compromise for those that do
not like the ‘big cities’.
But what it is like to work in Missouri as a Radiology professional? Now that is a
different story. As Missouri imaging and radiation therapy professionals continue to work on
our state licensure bill, our main goal for every Missouri patient is to be assured of an
educationally prepared and clinically competent individual performing their imaging studies
and radiation therapy procedures. In Missouri, the person that takes your insurance
information in the morning can by the afternoon be using ionizing radiation on you to take
your x-rays! I know it is extremely shocking but without state licensure, that is the way many
small rural clinics and physicians’ offices work.
The MoSRT is working diligently with our legislators; we need to do a better job of
educating them. There are some misunderstandings about:
legislators feel that state licensure will limit access to care in the rural communities
they feel the price of Radiology procedures will increase with state licensure
it is their opinion that state licensure will limit the profession
they have questions about the required education within the bill
One of the many points that we stressed at our recent hearing for HB 2613 was the
dose of radiation is totally dependent upon the operator of the equipment. It makes sense to
the Radiology community but our challenge has been how to help the legislator see this as
well.
Missouri will continue to work on this process. MoSRT is committed to advocating for
patient safety, radiation safety, and properly trained individuals performing Radiology studies
on our patients; Missouri patients who deserve the best from the Radiology community.

The Indiana Society of Radiologic Technologists not only offers benefits for technologists, but for students as well. The ISRT has worked diligently to provide students with the ability to stay just as involved as the technologists. Student membership costs only $10 and students may join at any time. The ISRT offers an annual cash scholarship, the Henry Konecny, RT(R) Student Scholarship. The amount and number of recipients varies yearly, based on funds available. The application deadline for this scholarship is January 1, 2017.
An annual ISRT conference is held every fall, this year conference will be held in October at Indiana University Kokomo Campus. Students are involved throughout the event by introducing the speakers and tracking attendance so Technologists can earn their continuing education credits. This conference offers students a chance to see a different side of their chosen profession. There is also a Student Quiz Bowl held at this conference where students may form small teams and compete against other students of Indiana in an X-ray boards-based trivia game. In addition, students can participate in scientific poster and essay competitions and have the chance to win cash prizes.
Students also have the opportunity to join our society's national organization, the American Society of Radiologic Technologists, also known as the ASRT. Students can join this professional organization for $35 and can join at any time. Every year the ASRT chooses two students from each state to attend the ASRT annual conference free of charge. Students can apply for this opportunity, the Student Leadership Development Program, on the ASRT website. At this annual conference, students will sit in on the House of Delegates meeting, as well as listen to educational lectures of various topics in the field of Radiology. One of the assets gained during this program is the chance to network with other students and professionals from across the country. The ASRT also offers numerous scholarship opportunities. Applications are due the 1st of February every year.
One way students can learn more about a professional organization is applying for an internship that is offered through the ISRT. This gives select students a chance to work closely with the board members. Interns will attend five Board of Directors meetings throughout their term which begins at the Annual Conference, and will learn what it takes to run a radiologic technologist professional organization.
As the current student interns, we are learning just how important it is for people, like the board members, to donate their time to the organization. Their efforts pay off, providing benefits for technologists and students. Spreading awareness to the new generation of incoming radiologic technologists can help secure the ISRT's future and increase membership. As membership numbers grow, the benefits offered will too. Being a student intern has opened up our outlook of our profession. There is so much more to Radiology then just x-raying patients. So much has to happen on the legislative end that many technologist and students are unaware of. As students we are the new generation of Radiologic Imaging and as technology progresses we are the ones who will be continuing on advancing the field. One thing we do not think many students are aware of is that we still have a voice and can put in
Hear from your Student Interns
The Indiana Journal of Radiologic Technology
Page 16
our opinion on different laws or trends that occur in the country and in each individual state. We are the future, and one thing that being a student intern has taught us is that our voice does matter. Technologists want to know what the student’s opinion is, in addition, we can also let them know what the latest trends are. Being involved in a professional organization has helped us come together with other students at different Universities across the state as well as technologist. We can compare and discuss what different hospitals, clinics, or Universities are doing. This communication and team work broadens our knowledge and allows us to become more well-rounded students and future technologists.
We the 2016 ISRT student interns, encourage both students and technologist to consider joining the ASRT affiliate of Indiana and see what the ISRT can do for you.
