BREVARD COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT REPORT Andy Ziegler, Chairman of the Board of Education

A twenty-six-year member of the Palm Bay Rotary Club, Andy Ziegler was elected to the Brevard County Schools (BCS) Board of Education in 2008. A graduate of Florida Tech with a BS in Computer Science, an engineer at Arte-mis Inc, he is active in several professional, community and educational organizations.

With almost eight years as an elected member of the county-wide Brevard County Schools (BCS) Board of Edu-cation (previously a member of the Board Audit Com-mittee), and presently serving as Chairman, Andy Zieg-ler’s first-hand experiences and personal insights in for-mulating policy, hiring and evaluating the district’s super-

intendent make him unique as a spokesman for public education in Brevard County. His presentation was focused essentially on basic information about our schools – enrollment data (47,000 students); employees (9,000); capital investments (82 schools, 12.8 million square feet of land, 199 busses) amounting to $49M in capital resources and $21M in maintenance costs; and largest consumer of electricity, water and internet services in Bre-vard County.

As to the quality of instruction, the district claims only 2.6% of the total public school enroll-ment in Florida yet has been awarded 30% of the state’s senior academic awards; of the 32 music, art and other academic specialty sites called Demonstration Schools in the state 27of them are located here. And our schools are first overall in per-pupil expenditure, one of the first measures of quality among educational institutions.

Addressing the 2013 contract with Educational Data Resources that the local print media criticized the school board and administrators for cost and lack of oversight in the installation of new software for payroll, accounting and other functions, Andy, with faint rebuke, said the reporting “could have been better.” He added that he personally had investigated another major supplier for the same kind of service package only to find that it would have cost twice as much while being already three years older.

In conclusion, and in response to a question about the district’s position on the current LGBT issue, Andy, in effect, said that the district is committed to providing fair treatment and equality to all students in the Brevard Public Schools and that they should be reassured that their individual rights will be protected.

Kindergarten students and teachers and, quite likely, some parents, will be in attend-ance. A few volunteers are needed to pass out books and, for Pat’s protection, help with crowd control. The kiddies love to get to her for hugs.

    See Pat for more information.

BEQUEST SOCETY AWARD FOLLOW-UP FOR JULIA BABBITT

Club President Jim Bowen, in a follow-up gesture, presented the crystal desk-top award to Past-President and DG Designate Julia Babbitt.

All Society members are recognized for their commitment to donate portions of their accumulated wealth to the Rotary International Foundation. Julia received her pin two weeks ago but she now has her crystal, which is gracing the desk in her office.

BETH GITLIN, RUTH SANDERSON ON CREW OF “HEART AND SOUL” DRAGONBOAT, WIN GOLD MEDAL

Two Cub Members, Beth Gitlin and Ruth Sanderson, are Dragonboat Paddlers with their team “Heart and Soul Paddlers.”

The mission of the team is to promote wellness and fitness for both breast cancer survi-vors and supporters. The team is composed of approximately 60 members, men and women, of all ages. The “Heart and Soul” team has two components: the “Heart and Soul Sisters,” (all breast cancer survivors) and “Heart and Soul Paddlers Gone Wild,” who are supporters. On the weekend of March 19, in competition with other teams from around the nation and Canada, the “Heart and Soul” team participated in the Suncoast International Dragonboat Festival in Sarasota where it captured the gold medal in the breast cancer survivor division.

Congratulations to Beth, Ruth and the “Heart and Soul” team!
